The delay between US and UK release made this have decent staying power in my chart, but I adore it <3 As the first single from her second album, this was just what we love from Chrisitna - a big ballad which brilliant vocals! The fragility in her voice is something that always gets me too, and the lyrics (especially the chorus) are all too relatable. Although Jar Of Hearts is really something else, this really argues itself as worthy of being her best song!

Another fairly longer runner next! The first first of two entries for Rita Whora and the second of three for Igloo Australia, and is a pretty perfect collab. The trap beat works so well with Iggy's rapping, and Rita's vocals are a perfect accompaniment. Lyrically, I love the theme of female empowerment too. This isn't quite the best on The New Classic, but it was a rightful huge transatlantic hit following Fancy.

33 Reigan - All Of The Pieces

(1-3) // 2wks *still charting*

The song in the top 150 which has charged for the least time is this, but to be fair it was only released a couple of weeks ago :P Reigan has had numerous entries in the countdown with her various X Factor performances, but this is her first "proper" single from her debut EP, which features studio versions of some of her performances. This was co-written by The Voice UK alumnus Becky Hill (who herself provides vocals for a song that's still to come), and is pretty much the song that Glow by Ella Hendersom should have been, as fab as that is in itself. The way it builds is just magical, and of course Reigan kils it vocally as well. She has one of the best voices I've ever heard on any X Factor or The Voice.

Floplie didn't have the best 2014, as even with her being on The Voice she couldn't manage a top 10 lead single and her album barely went silver :( But she did manage her second #1 single and album (somehow Better Than Today made it!!!) in my chart, so all is not let. It's not like she really went all out with a risk and alienated her fans, because this is classic euphoric Kylie. It has pretty much all the ingredients of a Kylie classic... But because she isn't under 30, a "cool" indie band or a male DJ putting out faceless bland 90s inspired dance or deep house, Radio 1 dismissed her as not right for their audience, this wasn't supported and was subsequently not much more than a fanbase buy, sadly.

Just missing the top 40 is a huge hit from arguably the biggest male star of the year, Ed Sheeran. This became his first UK #1 upon release, and was a bit of a departure from his other singles (You Need Me, I Don't Need You is similar but it was rawer than this polished sound). It just shows Ed's talent, because he can just as easily sing his feelings with just a guitar as craft a banger like this! This song could easily be the highlight of a Justin Timberlake album, especially with Ed's falsetto in the bridge.

One of the biggest Uk hits of the year kicks off the top 30, in fact this is one of the very few dance songs I don't wish would disappear forever! These guys had a couple of singles before this, including the wonderful Mozart's House, but this marked a new bar being set for them! A perfect blend of classical, pop and dance, Jess' vocals shine on an instrumental like this and it's just so catchy and infectious <3 They'll never better this commercially or musically to be honest.

This the first song in the top 40 that didn't chart anywhere, as even her home country Sweden didn't want her! This was a gutting flop for her in Melodifestivalen, coming last in her heat! All that when I'm STILL not over Heartstrings crashing out in 5th in the heat despite being a favourite last year... But this gave her a second #1 in my chart after Heartstrings, so all isn't lost :kink: I didn't expect this to do big things for her after even Heartstrings flopped, but I love the way it builds and for me the chorus is killer! To be fair though, she did kill her chances completely by not being able to sing this live :smoke:

(38-28-16-8-1-2-4-6-9-15-21-27-33-37-40)*when chart was top 40 // 15wks

Jessica's third of five entries is the floppiest single from her current era, falling short of the top 40 in Australia and becoming her lowest peaking single. Whilst it's no Pop A Bottle, To The End Of The Earth or Never Be The Same, it's a brilliant example of catchy, fun dance-pop and is the sort of song you'd want to hear at a party. I don't know exactly what went wrong, because it's not as if the era was dead in the water (Never Be The Same peaked at #6 after this) and it wasn't a horrific single choice. But oh well, maybe Pop A Bottle was still loved by radio as that was a big hit. Either way, Jess notched up another #1 with this after Pop A Bottle and Kick Up Your Heels, and set a record by achieving a further three number 1s in my chart from the Beautiful era with Can I Get A Moment, I Believe and Never Be The Same (even though Can I Get A Moment was from a re-release).

Back to Sweden next, with a gorgeous ballad from former Melodifestivalen entrant Molly Sandén. The lyrics to this are incredibly relatable for anyone who suffers from issues with self esteem or confidence and, as with her flawless song Why Am I Crying?, you can hear the pain and believe every word she sings. I hope an album comes after this, because her last one Unchained was great. It's a shame she hasn't done MF again yet but maybe next year :P

Another UK hit rounds off this section, this time a #1 from Rita Whora <3 Produced and written by her ex-beau Calvin Harris, this campaign turned sour just as she would have gone to the US with it as they split and he blocked her from performing and promoting it, and she now has to scrap most of her album... But anyway, this song is just so much fun! Very generic, but this is Rita Ora so nobody expects a 7 minute alternative R&B confessional :P At the end of the day, this is just a brilliant pop song and sometimes that's all that's needed.

The highest song in this countdown that missed my weekly top 5 comes from Paloma! All of her eras have been great so far, and whilst this album wasn't quite as good as the others she pulled her best song to date out of the bag with it <3 This would have fit in very well in 2008 with the whole Duffy/Amy Winehouse craze, as it sounds like a lost Motown Classic brought right up to date. The octave jump near the end is one of the highlights of the song for me, it really showcases her gorgeous voice and vocal power!

US peak: N/A (#2 Australia)

My peak: #1

(1-2-3-6-13-18-19-22-27) // 9wks *still charting*

There have been many X Factor Australia performances as well as Reigan and Dean's singles, but this is the highest! Marlisa was the winner this year, and released this as her debut single. As is traditional with X Factor Australia, the winner gets an original song suited to them unlike the karaoke cover our winners usually get! This is more winners' single-y than the last three Aussie winning singles, as a midtempo R&B song, but crucially it suits her and this is exactly what I envisioned for her. For a song that's not particularly uptempo, it's damn catchy and her voice is just killer for a 15 year old *.*

One of the biggest surprise hits of the year (in the UK anyway, as a girlband it would have been more surprising if it wasn't a hit in my chart!) came from these girls, the first really promising girlband to be launched since Little Mix. Sadly, this release is tinged with tragedy as member Simone died the week of the UK release although the girls are continuing alone and we're waiting on their follow-up Lighthouse, dedicated to Simone. The song itself is a real joy, simple but so poppy and catchy. And the message is great, because who doesn't know numerous boys who are "so pretty with an ugly heart"?

There have already been lots of Eurovision songs, but there are only two above this... In one of my favourite pop moments of 2014, this "bearded lady" (or drag queen, but the former generated more column inches!) whipped up a storm in Copenhagen and slayed the competition with a classy song that could easily be a Bond theme. Before the week of live shows, I sort of wrote off Conchita as a decent ish song with a gimmick that probably wouldn't work, but as the semis passed and the final came around I began to think it was really hers to lose. I wish it had been bigger in the Uk, but top 20 for a song that isn't particularly commercial with the Eurovision curse working against it.

Just missing out on the top 20 is the best dance song of the year, so of course it was a bit of a non-number 1 in the UK... I didn't listen to this right away, because the charts were so full of crap dance I just dismissed this as yet another one, and as not much of a fan of instrumental dance I didn't much care for Gecko. But with Becky added, this is a perfect example of the kind of dance song I adore. The beat isn't too generic, but it's interesting enough to compliment the vocals, and Becky's voice perfectly suits dance songs so I'd love it if she did more stuff like this.

Brilliant so far!

Sing took ages to grow on me but I think it's excellent, his falsetto is actually pretty fantastic and the rap is also fun to sing-a-long too. Going by TV performances it seems he's very good at doing it live too. This song seems to be the one thing Pharrell hasn't ruined in the past two years :cheer:

IWNLYD is an excellent pop song just as you describe it, the production is very good too. Such a shame the album had to be scrapped because it could've been fantastic with Calvin on board.

Rise Like A Phoenix is a huge moment too, it all just works so well on the Eurovision stage and I was elated to see her win. Will be good to see her hosting this year too :cheer:

Human and only love can hurt like this are both so beautiful

Kicking off the top 20 is a generic asf anthem from everyone's favourite "barely still signed" girlband The Saturdays! As uninspired as it may be, it's just so much fun and so catchy, plus being The Saturdays you can't really expect much else :P Sadly, as the first and only single from their greatest hits CD, this didn't fare as well as any of their other singles and only just scraped the top 40 (#38) based on the then-new streaming rules (it would still be their lowest peaking single, #25, without streaming :/). As such, the campaign was rendered dead in the water and they haven't bothered with much else since then... I just hope it didn't kill them dead really, because no group does generic pop as good as The Saturdays and I've adored them since 2008! They just need to ACTUALLY PROMOTE which is probably what didn't help this - it was essentially a fanbase buy and they just don't have the fanbase to get a hit from just that.

Just like Up 22 places below it, Somethin' Bad is on paper my absolute dream! It's a collab between two of my absolute favourite artists who are the current queens of country. And it definitely ends up working so well, especially with the video which gives it a Thelma and Louise feel; this is something which the lyrics reflect. This became the first duet between women in decades to top the Billboard Country Songs, and is also Miranda's second top 20 and highest peaking pop hit in the US. It's just what you'd expect from these two, but it's all the better for it, a perfect example of country with a rock tinge.

The first of two songs for Jess in the top 20, and the first of four Aussie songs, is her most recent single. Although it's very 70s, rooted in funk, soul and Motown, this sounds quite fresh as it could easily be a Pharrell production! The song is so sassy, It rightfully became an eighth top 5 hit Jess in Australia following a killer X Factor Australia performance, and also became her 5th #1 on my chart overall! It's a shame they don't launch her internationally, but with all the Pharrell produced crap doing so well there's a good chance for an actual good song with the same sound to do well :P We'll just ignore the video though.

(1-2-4-8-9-10-11-14-17-20-24-29-35) // 13wks *still charting*

Carrie didn't even release a studio album and she still has two songs in my yesr end top 20, slay. This is the second time she's achieved that double after Good Girl and Blown Away both made my 2012 top 10! Something In The Water is the lead (and probably only I'd imagine, given her pregnancy and how long country single campaigns last for) single from her greatest hits package Decade #1, and draws inspiration from gospel, even moreso than her dabblings with it in songs like Jesus Take The Wheel thanks to an interpolation of Amazing Grace. As such, it's also been a huge Christian radio hit in the US. Musically, this is classic Carrie but with a bit of a twist - it draws together the slow build-up an anthemic chorus of Blown Away with new gospel elements and the usual incredible vocals to create a huge song that blew away pretty much all country competition this year.

Pleased to see "Something In The Water" ahead of "Somethin' Bad". The collab actually disappointed me :(.
eh WAYWF is pretty awful to me, so generic and just bad. didn't get much enjoyment from it really and i was always hoping it'd grow on me. definitely their worst single ever for me now. :(

I seem to usually be the same with collabs of that calibre, for example this and Olly/Demi should on paper be my top 2 of the year! But I guess we expect something so stratospheric that even when it's "just" in my top 20 songs of the yesr it's a bit disappointing, if that makes sense?

The highest male led track of 2014 is by one of the hottest men of the year, Nick Jonas. Although I've quite frankly always wanted him to sit on my face, 2014 really saw him blossom with a certain photoshoot... Coincidentally, said photoshoot was around the time this epic single of his blew up :P Whilst Chains was pretty good, this is just another level *.* The catchy asf 80s inspired power-pop chorus is everything, and nick's vocal on this is so sexy. I'm jealous of the girl he's all jealous over tbh. This MUST be released in the UK and be a hit

The second highest Eurovision related song this year (everyone probably can guess what the highest is) didn't even win the national selection it was entered in, and is Ace's second entry in my top singles of the year countdown. This very narrowly missed winning Melodifestivalen by two points to Sanna Nielsen's Undo, having won the jury vote and being placed second in the televote. The song itself is pop perfection, a total anthem with an Icona Pop-esque chanted chorus which just screams international hit. Sadly, the Eurovision tag will stop it being pushed at all... Also, I am STILL not over the fact she's 32.

"everyone's favourite "barely still signed" girlband The Saturdays!"

HA!

'What Are You Waiting For' top 20! :D

Poor 'Human' such an underrated song of 2014.
