Shake it for the man of the year

14. Schoolboy Q – Oxymoron

Hell of a Night / Studio / Man of the Year

One album at a time now i'm presenting my top 14. I'll spin it as it being because it's the best of 2014 but really these are the FOURTEEN ESSENTIAL must own/hear albums of the year. The rest i loved, but these really affected me ~

Kicking off is an artist i knew very little about before this year. It was one of the most hotly anticipated hip-hop albums of the year from one of the most exciting talents in the business. The album did not disappoint. It is at times gruesome and grotesque, at other times it is open and moving, but throughout it all it is so honest. The lyrics are about Schoolboy Q - his life, experiences, trials, tribulations - but in that he speaks a universal language that makes it a highly accessible album. It managed to get to #1 on the US Album Chart the week it was released which is testatment to just how accomplished the album from the fairly little known man at the time is. He's not quite Man of the Year for me, but he put up a good fight for it.

uptight downtown is nice. but really her debut album singles are miles better. still adore in for the kill. i agree let me down gently is much much better

high  the drop is really quite something, huge synths and it's quite different. praying for it to get some sort of support

Yeah it's a really weak single for her standards. Probably my least favourite after 'Quicksand'. The album more than makes up for it though

Really hope 'High' can be big too. Probably won't happen though </3

Uptight downtown is stunning and a great song but it only just made my official top 10 (albeit it was a terrible week for release as there were 4 new entries in the top 5 that week)

Shame you missed the La Roux question in my EOY thread yesterday :(

Also really hope the buzz single you are referring to is let me down gently, that really is amazing and the best song this era for me

It was probably never going to be big, it didn't have the backing and it's really not BIG enough a comeback to make the top 10 :(

And it *might* have been that song that i was referring to...

25. Taylor Swift – Wildest Dreams

NO YOUTUBE LINK BECAUSE SHE'S A WHORE

Well where did this one come from? A few weeks ago i wouldn't have batted an eyelid at Taylor, never mind give an entire album of her's a chance, but i took the plunge and haven't looked back since. It's a wonderful album, but this moment in particular stands leagues above the rest. When that melancholy beat starts at the beginning and her beautiful tone kicks in, it's goosebumps every time. The lyrics are splendid - an innocent love but longing for so much more. So relatable and delivered in the most honest and passionate way imaginable. I have so much love for this song and never thought i'd fall so deeply in love with something from Swift, but that just goes to show how narrow-mindedness never works. The entire song works, but it's the smaller moments where she utters something as simple as "say you'll remember me" that gets to me. She does it so well.

Well, you will be happy to know that I do tend to bat my eyes often  And they should really censor that lewd word -_-

Not really listened to the entire album but it's extremely strong as a whole (from what I've heard so far)! 'Out Of The Woods' is marvelous. You now get an Nelly-approved cheer :cheer:

She sings about love too much tho. Her theme for the next album should be on latrines :magic:

'1989' is very good indeed. though i find it interesting you've found 'wildest dreams' to be the highlight. it's good for what it is but a total and utter rip of lana del rey in so many ways ;(
Dirty Gold is so underrated. It has so many highlights. 'Planes Fly' 'Deep Sea Diver' and obviously 'Battle Cry' are amazing.

omg Bal, missed about 3 pages of this. Was too lazy to go through the pages I've missed so I've skipped directly to page 9. x Let's see what's here *scrolls up*...

... I see Taylor and I approve. ^_^

I began to have time for Taylor during the 'Red' era, I rather liked the singles from it, particularly the first two. I still wasn't quite convinced to check out that album though, and I still haven't. However I felt compelled to give '1989' a try though and I'm so glad I did... it's one of the albums of the year. Or possibly THE album of the year? :o 'Wildest Dreams' is definitely one of my highlight tracks, so I'm glad you've connected with that one!

I will remember you Bal, standing in a nice dress, staring at the sunset, babe.

YES YES YES YES YES HAUS  :cheer:

You know how much I stan for Taylor and Wildest Dreams is in my favourite 4 songs she has ever done, it is so stunning, beautiful, amazing, magical and so so much more. Definitely one of my favourite songs this year by miles and I am so so happy to see this beauty on your countdown

wildest dreams is really stunning, it is lana del rey down to a tee but it's lovely. hoping it'll be a single later on down the line as a break from all the upbeat stuff. although i do like 'style' i think it'd be the wrong choice personally
1989 is largely awful, but there are one or two decent tracks on it.

Wash away all the things you've taken

24. Sia - Big Girls Cry

Another artist who i completely ignored until this year, and one who i was always put off by because i just could not gel with her voice. But my-oh-my, this year she came into her own and gave me some of my favourite musical moments in a long time. There will be more to come from her later, but here we start off with the very big "should be a single next year please hear my pleas Sia". 'Big Girls Cry' is a song that at the same time seems so personal to the artist, but at the same time it could relate to anyone. It's a lot more tender than the lead single from the album but it soars just as high. Beautifully crafted and sung, with painful lyrics and that trademark Sia emotion to drive it along. I really want her to release it as a single, not to give her more commercial success but because i believe people need to experience it, because it's just that true a song and i know so many people will connect, be moved and be affected by it and that's when music is at its most essential.

big girls cry is absolutely stunning! really should've moved on to it earlier, i'd have loved to hear it on commercial radio. she has such a beautiful voice so anything she touches is pretty much amazing anyway tbh

free the animal is still my main album highlight though

He'll never love you like I can

13. Sam Smith - In The Lonely Hour

Leave Your Lover / Stay With Me / Good Thing

Yes it is he who must not be named. The male-Sandé. The devil respawned. The evil one!!1

In actuality he is a pleasant, if a little personality-lacking man who makes sensual MOR music. I was ready to hurtle my stones at him after 'Money On My Mind' which truly is an abomination, but everything since that self-indulgent nightmare continued to tug at my heartstrings. The album, as the title suggests, is about heartbreak, loneliness and love. In moments such as 'Leave Your Lover' or 'Like I Can' he sings about he is the worthy one and the one that can offer more, but it never comes across disingenuous or selfish - it's tender and moving. An album that never really shifts in pace, but that's no bad thing because he does this stripped back thing so well. People wanting him to continue down the dance-infused Disclosure route will inevitably been disappointed, but listen with an open mind and there is a lot of goodness to be found in this very lonely collection. Now release 'Leave Your Lover' you sillybean.
