Thank You is a great song, forgot it did so well actually. Maybe Kanye and Lil Wayne's names helped sell the track despite their minimal contribution!

Good to see TINA and Marilyn Monroe here too and delighted to see Hold On, We're Going Home, Turn Back Time, Get Lucky and Look Right Through holding on from 2013 :)

Thank You is one of my least favourite songs of the year easily, absolutely no melody and just a mess of words.

A very Joseph friendly section now, kicking off with Katy Perry (check out her artist forum moderated by the wonderful me x) and her most recent track This Is How We Do. The whole Prism campaign was a little...hit and miss in the charts, and this was more on the "miss" side, alongside Birthday and Unconditionally. Roar and Dark Horse were on the "hit" side but that goes without saying really. This Is How We Do was always a bit of an odd single choice for me as it took a while to click (wasn't until I saw her live that it clicked) and even then is still one of her weaker singles. WHERE IS WALKING ON AIR, KATY???? Old pals Tinie Tempah and Labrinth teamed up again for the third single from Tinie's album Demonstration. Lover Not a Fighter is one of my personal favourite Tinie tracks, it's a lot of fun with some excellent rapping from Tinie. Sadly it fell out of the top 40 from #25 on the week of the BRITs. Damn. Matrix & Futurebound gained another slow burning hit with Control at the start of 2014 - it was looking to bomb at first when it entered at #18 but actually climbed to #7 the following week, which is rare for a held-back hit, let alone for two to do it in the same week as Fuse ODG did the same with Million Pound Girl. It kinda plummeted once it left the top 10 though oops. This year's John Lewis ad was soundtracked by one of my favourite artists of the past couple of years, Tom Odell, and featured the absolutely ADORABLE Monty the Penguin. The track was predicted by some, me included, to not do as well as previous John Lewis advert tracks by Gabrielle Aplin, Ellie Goulding and Lily Allen, and we were proved right when it did basically the same as Tom's only other hit Another Love except with a higher peak. Still a beautiful track and hopefully setting Tom up very well for album #2. Finally, Tori Kelly is at #136 with her debut single, featuring Professor Green. OK that's not technically true but Tori does totally STEAL Lullaby with her gorgeous vocals and it's what drew me to the song in a way I never have been to a Prof song. Fantastic track and was very pleasing to see it do well in the chart. Slay Tori.

And let's all have a rewatch of the John Lewis ad. On me. Tissues at the ready...

Not much to say about the latest bunch of songs, they're all fairly "meh" - 'This is How We Do' less so but definitely one of Katy's weakest singles. That said, its single release did help the song grow on me much more than it did when it was an album track.
Will this be completed in less than a year this time? :kink:

If I'd remembered it, it would have been finished in a day. ;)

Sam Smith has been utterly unavoidable this year, an X Factor performance (and Taylor Swift not being available on streaming services :P) ensured 'Like I Can' gave him a fourth straight top 10 hit from his debut album and it's showing no signs of being any less a longevity king than its predecessors. It's a fairly decent song and certainly much better than the previous 2 but not a patch on 'Money On My Mind' for me. A double whammy of The Vamps next, second single 'Wild Heart' and third single 'Last Night' (which sound like faux Mumford & Sons and faux McFly respectively, neither are THAT awful but neither were anywhere near as good as 'Can We Dance' either) had pretty similar chart runs and indeed the former prevails here by only 8 points. 4/5 of their top 200 appearances are gone already, will 'Somebody To You' be top 100? At #132 is another BJSC-originating smash from Cash Cash and Bebe Rexha. It never really took off properly in Cash Cash's native USA but did go top 5 in the UK. An okayish song I guess (this is a theme of this section). Finally at #131 is Christina Perri's third hit 'Human', from its first 4 weeks it looked like it may have gone on to rival 'Jar Of Hearts' and 'A Thousand Years' in the longevity stakes but alas it began to drop quickly after that. I, perhaps surprisingly, love all three of her hits but this is probably the weakest of them.

A fairly uninspiring section this time for me, kicking things off with a Justin Timberlake song. Was quite an odd song to see become a "hit" following the flops Take Back the Night and TKO. I say "hit" because it obviously wasn't THAT big and Capital FM would have you thinking it was a bigger hit than it was but it still did quite well considering. Queen Taylor is next with most recent single Blank Space at #129, which is by far the best track left. It's obviously not too high yet because it's still top 10, but naturally she is still slaying favourites left, right and centre. The track has only JUST hit me properly (still liked it before) and it looks like it's set to at least give Taylor another gold-certified single, possibly coming for her fifth platinum single eventually too? :o Tiësto proves that he is literally the devil with 666 points. Red Lights isn't bad but it's very very generic. The still-generic-but-more-iconic follow-up Wasted (not the Naked version http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-xpa1/t5.0-1/41787_138659892838767_2273_q.jpg) is still to come. Lana Del Rey's Summertime Sadness did quite well again in 2014 despite not making the top 40, getting 26 more weeks top 100. I feel like there was a reason for its revival but I can't think what it is right now  Finally, BLUNTY, King of Twitter, is at #126 with his surprisingly big hit Bonfire Heart. 2014 sees the end of its top 40 run but a lot of top 100 longevity. Surprise hit? Absolutely. Complaining? No, it's by far his best. And I really can't begrudge him doing well if he keeps up the Twitter comebacks. Amazing.

If I'd remembered it, it would have been finished in a day. ;)

Slithering into the top 125 is 'Anaconda', a song that seems to get a pass for literally containing the lyric 'fuck the skinny bitches' while poor brave Meghan Trainor gets constant flak for supposed skinny shaming. I've never been able to make my mind up on this song. On the one hand, 'Baby Got Back' is an iconic song and it was great to see it in the chart on some level. On the other hand... IDK, it's basically a novelty song isn't it, and I'm not sure if it's any good of one. Moving onto a song I definitely like, Shift K3Y's 'Touch' which was one of the only real surprise top 3 hits of the year thanks to lacking a single pre-order on iTunes. It was the start of a revival of the Craig David sound which lasted for one song. If only it had caught on more. I actually liked the follow-up 'I Know' even more but unfortunately that didn't do near as well. 'Dibby Dibby Sound' was one of this forum's most despised hits of the year and I do see why, although I love the song myself. Dibbydibbydibby *.* Always great to see Ms Dy-na-mi-tee clinging onto relevance. 2014 wasn't a great year for girlgroups chart success wise but Neon Jungle did outperform most expectations with their second single 'Braveheart', after debut 'Trouble' missed the top 10 in 2013. I haven't massively loved any of their singles but 'Braveheart' is definitely the best of them. Unfortunately for them they could only hold back the flop tsunami for one more single and they're currently in no better a place than the Stooshes of the world. Finally we have a 2013 holdover from One Direction with the still awful 'Story Of My Life', which thankfully dove off a cliff after exiting the top 10, though still managed a respectable enough 20 top 100 weeks in 2014. Like The Vamps, all but one of their songs have dropped out already - 5 Seconds Of Summer on the other hand still have 3 of their 4 top 200 entries to come. Rixton also have a song coming while on the girlgroup front all that remains is a song each from G.R.L and Little Mix.

Dibby Dibby Sound and Touch

Hopefully Gravity will do well for DJ Fresh this year.

It means that 'Walking On Air' should have been a single :(

Another fairly uninspiring section here sadly, kicking things off with the best track here. Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding previously teamed up on huge hit I Need Your Love, and decided to collaborate again for Calvin's most recent album Motion. The result is Outside, one of my personal favourite Calvin tracks (even if it is getting a bit boring already). Fun fact: most of its top 10 weeks have actually been gained by streaming and it holds the joint record to date for most top 10 weeks gained through streaming, alongside Sam Smith's I'm Not the Only One. Next up is Zedd's highest charting track to date. Stay the Night did quite well at first before a plummet down the top 40 and then stabilising again briefly in the lower top 40. The track is fun for a bit but it's...largely not very exciting. It could be any dance track really. Maroon 5 are at #118. I dislike them intensely. I will not say anything else about them because I fear T Boy will get onto the undertaker before long. Secondcity appear next with I Wanna Feel, a #1 track which spent only 6 weeks in the top 40 (7 on sales which isn't much better). The track always felt like a very underwhelming #1 to me and is basically the same lyric repeated throughout - it just goes nowhere. Apart from a brief section from Daniel Bedingfield. Yes really. This was vocalist Kelli-Leigh's second #1 following Duke Dumont's I Got U, both of which she was uncredited on. Poor girl. Finally, ZHU is at #116 with debut hit Faded. There's not much to say about ZHU cause he has remained very anonymous. I won't state my opinion on this track because Bray will help T Boy find the undertaker's number if I do.

*as will Iz. Zhu continues to slay and take no prisoners I see. *.*

I will never get the mass negativity that surrounds Stay The Night, I find it just as uplifting as Clarity if not more so some of the time. Very few other dance producers would go for indulging in that great breakdown it has but Zedd does and that's why I love him.

(there is definitely something about dance guys starting with the letter 'Z', I should look into this~)

Apparently will.i.am changed the title of his #1 hit 'It's My Birthday' from the original title of simply 'Birthday' in order to avoid confusion with the Katy Perry song of the same name. He perhaps needn't have bothered because the song has proven to be one of Katy's least successful singles to date. That said, a minor hit by Katy Perry is still fairly big and it lands at #115 here. A decent song if not as good as some of the other disco revival tracks of late. The only other song here that debuted in 2014 is 5 Seconds Of Summer's second and worst single, the very irritating 'Don't Stop'. After their debut single did so well in its first week despite their name being far from established most predicted 'Don't Stop' would have a much bigger first week, but instead it fell some way short of the first week sales of 'She Looks So Perfect' and missed #1. Good. #114 is Kid Ink and Chris Brown's 'Show Me', pretty much identical to every other DJ Mustard song ever but somehow worse (possibly down to the sacrilege sample of 'Show Me Love'), another song that looked like it had peaked in the low top 40 at the end of 2013 but rebounded to a new peak at the start of 2014. Finally we have Bastille's 'Of The Night' providing more 90s dance appropriation and Martin Garrix's 'Animals' finishing a couple of places ahead of the Maroon 5 song of the same name. #111 with 777 points, something seems oddly satisfying about that. :magic:

Another 5SOS song now - my personal least favourite single of theirs, Amnesia. It's a great track still, I just prefer their other singles. Amnesia was looking to be a minor top 40 hit before the digital EP and physical were both released and it was propelled into the top 10 for a week. Then free-fell back out. Oops. It didn't continue plummeting down the chart so quickly though and only had two less weeks top 40 than Don't Stop. It appears higher here due to its impressive top 100 longevity pre-release. David Guetta managed to get a top 5 hit with what I hear is a complete rip-off of another dance interpretation of Cher's Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) by Audio Bullys, who used Nancy Sinatra's cover of the song and credited her on their track. Guetta's version features Skylar Grey on vocals instead. It was very uninspired and the breakdown was incredibly out of place compared to the vocals but it was still an enjoyable track. OneRepublic's follow-up to Counting Stars made the top 10 for a week earlier this year thanks to a remix from Alesso (it is not Alesso's track like many thought, let's not annoy my OCD :)) which made the track incredibly dull. Shame cause I quite like the original version without Alesso. The remix made it sound like any dance song. SAIL. SAIL. SAIL. SAIL. That's all AWOLNATION's track was, wasn't it? A guy shouting the word "SAIL" for an amount of time. It's what it felt like anyway. Flush. Finally, Queen Ellie Goulding's first EVER UK #1 http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-xpa1/t5.0-1/41787_138659892838767_2273_q.jpg is at #106 with the tail end of its top 40 run. Burn may have been what some would consider a sell-out but I can't deny that I absolutely love it and would say it's my favourite Ellie song.

Arctic Monkeys' 'Do I Wanna Know?' has been one of the most surprisingly (in a good way) massive hits of the last couple of years, of course it never got higher than #11 but it sold consistently for month after month after month and racked up way more weeks on the chart than anyone could have expected. It added a couple of weeks in the top 40 in early 2014 thanks to the BRITs and was back in the top 100 for almost the entire second half of the year once streaming was incorporated into the chart, helping it to finish 105th for 2014. At #104 is the first song that was released from Ed Sheeran's second album 'x' (due to record labels being their usual devious selves and holding 'Sing' back for months), the instant grat track 'One'. It took advantage of the OCC rules regarding instant grats at the time to power to a top 20 debut despite a midweek 'release', and continued to benefit from subsequent pre-orders of the album although it did prove to be a fairly popular song in its own right as well. Generous streaming also helped its chart run of course so its appearance as high as #104 here is courtesy of Ed getting on the good side of the oft-maligned rule changes of the year. It's quite a NICE ballad but doesn't really cry out single material. Little Mix fall just short of the top 100 with the female empowerment anthem 'Salute' - on this song and the other singles from the album of the same name they seem to be doing their best imitation of Destiny's Child, and it's a good thing. 'Salute' gave them their first post-album top 10 hit thanks to Britain's Got Talent. G.R.L's 'Ugly Heart' is now the only girlgroup song remaining. A 2013 holdover from Sir John Newman also falls just short of the top 100 and thankfully so does the absolute low point of the entire top 200 (although spoiler alert: the song at #100 comes close to this description as well), the supremely irritating 'For The First Time In Forever', another offcut from that poxy Disney film that I so wish never existed. Ms. Screech herself thus only has one track in the top half of the countdown, as does her friend Kristen Bell (whose remaining song is infinitely better than the rest of the 'Frozen' shite).

Naysayers agog, we're up to the top 100 after just 5 days.

Last year, Bray and Jack got to the top 100 on April 11th. This year, Bray and I have got there on January 3rd. I am obviously the better half of #JJ x
