This is an amazing song. Though I do think 'Lights Off' or 'Give Up' would be better album sellers.

I think it's been sporadically published in the past, but only comprehensively in the last 20 years. I think the nearest it got to media sampling in the 70's was Rosko's Roundtable, where star guests gave opinions on new releases (without always knowing who they were) and listener reaction might have influenced the playlist. or not!

 

I watched the totps 1980 show about the show itself and the changes in that year and it mentioned the playlist committee on radio 1 although back then it was full of old people haha

I didn't realise it was pushed back lol. that explains it though, it would be very odd for it to pass Radio 1 by.

Going back to Radio 1s 'classic' track they play, they have always played the same ones. I remember at the beginning of the 00s Robbie's Rock DJ was used as a classic even up to 2005/6, another popular one was NORE 'Nothing'.

 

To be fair most of the current 'classics' I quite like, Owl City 'Fireflies' & Foster The People 'Pumped Up Kicks' are other regulars. I think which ones get picked is simply down to the producers who are bound to have their favs.

 

But I agree there should be a bigger list and more tracks that didn't make the A List etc. What's interesting is 'Moves Like Jagger' is a classic but it was never playlisted at the time.
