12. RIHANNA (1,562,000) 9 HITS

http://img2.timeinc.net/people/i/2007/specials/chase/rihanna/rihanna1.jpg

The fourth highest placed female soloist on this list is, depending on how you count sales, the biggest selling female act of all time with over 1.5 million of those sales coming before her teens ended. She would be considerably higher but for the sales climate of these years with “Umbrella” topping the charts for 10 long weeks during a rainy summer of 2007 which would undoubtedly be a million seller in other years. With 6 of those hits top 5 she rarely failed to hit spot and even subsequently a Rihanna flop rarely seems to have any impact of her long term chart career.

11. FIVE STAR (1,712,000) 12 HITS

http://www.overgroundonline.com/press/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/fivestar.jpg

Much more a replication of Jackson 5 than New Edition ever were, Five Star were brothers and sisters managed by their father and their first 12 hits encompass their zenith popularity wise. Though the No 1 spot always eluded them they scored 6 top 10 hits in 15 months in 86/87 but had fallen out of favour by the end of the decade.

So in the top 10 we have 4 groups, 3 ladies and 3 gentlemen!

I had totally forgotten about Rihanna. Her success always seems to not fully register in my mind.

Ready for that top ten!

There's another huge 00s- present act still to come I think! Incredible that Adele's single sales swelled so much with the release of 21 and its singles!

Several, I would imagine.

There you go then! I'm not sure whether I'm surprised on her placing or not but I'm guessing the 6th (and final) hit to count was "Umbrella" at some point in its chart career? Top ten was impossible then!

I've no idea who's in the top ten apart from maybe one or two acts.

10. BILLIE PIPER (1,749,000) 8 HITS

Becoming the youngest female solo act to debut at No 1 Billie Piper appearance on the pop scene was immediate, indeed she was the youngest female ever to garner a hat-trick of chart toppers when, in May 2000, she debuted at No 1 again with “Day & Night”- she was just 17. The period was marred by being booed at the Smash Hits awards in 1999 as she was dating Five member Richie Nevill, and a court case against a stalker, and when her second album disappointed she withdraw from the charts and ventured into acting which proved lucrative. Had her final single, a cover of Blondie’s “Tide Is High” been released and made it big, then it’'s probable Atomic Kitten'’s cover a year later would not have been made.

09. WESTLIFE (1,787,000) 5 HITS

http://www.khattam.com/music/pop/westlife/westlife4.jpg

Louis Walsh’s golden boys (once he’d convinced Ronan to go solo and split up Boyzone) started their career with seven tracks which all debuted at No 1- a record which still stands today. Their first hit “Swear It Again” was part of a purple patch for Irish acts in the charts and in a twelve month period when 9 tracks by Irish acts topped our charts, more than the total of the 45 years previously. They essentially became a covers band from around 2005 onwards though for the period covered here they did at least produce original material singles wise.

I started to think about who might be in the top ten and forgot about the 1980 start-point. So, I can cross Lulu and Cliff off my list now

I was a huge billie fan

Her label wanted her to release the tide is high after walk of life, she didn't want too! Innocent then gave it to the kittens!

She's stil a guilty pleasure

'Day & Night' is one of my favourite pop songs, ever.

08. CRAIG DAVID (1,908,000) 6 HITS

The great hope of the British music press in 2000 Craig David was a mad who could do little wrong during the year opening with one of the first big commercial garage records to make the mainstream (“Re-Rewind The Crowd Say Bo Selecta”) he grabbed two No 1 singles through the year and a debut album which sold over 200,000 in its first week, a record at the time.

07. BOYZONE (1,911,0000) 5 HITS

Talking of covers bands, Boyzone were fresh faced boys when they started (who can forget that first TV appearance) as they started off with five top 5 hits though they failed to grab a chart toppers until Take That had split. They promptly went on to become the biggest selling boyband of the 90s, yet incredibly on this survey, they aren’t the top Irish act!

Craig David's first album was so bloody good!!

So Im guessing Rihanna's numbers go from her start right until dont stop the music (the last single she releasee before turning 20)

Music Of the Sun era (325.000)

1. Pon de replay - #2 - 250,000

2. If it's loving that you want - #11 - 75,000

A Girl like me era (875.000)

1. SOS - 2 - 350,000

2. Unfaithful - #2 - 450,000

3. We ride - #17 - 75,000

Good girl gone bad era (1.710.000)

1. Umbrella - #1 - 850,000

2. Shut up and drive - #5 - 230,000

3. Hate that I love you - #15 - 150,000

4. Don't stop the music - #4 - 480,000

I dont know where your figures come from.... But my numbers say 3.910.000 FROM THOSE SONG ALONE. She is around 18.000.000 singles sold right now in her total.

06. B*WITCHED (2,651,000) 7 HITS

http://cdn4.independent.ie/incoming/article29450399.ece/0f17d/ALTERNATES/h342/bwitched_99.jpg

Who ever thought that B”Witched would be so high on this list when we started out? Becoming the first group ever to have their first four singles debut at No 1 they were unstoppable for 18 months at least racking up 2.6 million singles sales and 7 top 20 hits. Their mix of a denim clad wardrobe and lightweight pop was a winner to begin with but the novelty wore thin by the second album which ultimately resulted in them being dropped and splitting in 2001.

05. JUSTIN BIEBER (2,873,000) 31 HITS

http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Music/Pix/pictures/2012/7/2/1341221128749/Justin-Bieber-in-2012-008.jpg

Scoring by far the largest amount of hits here on this survey, and indeed ever by an act in their teens, Bieber was of the most famous finds from youtube who got a little help from Usher on the way into the charts at just 15. He’s had his fair share of criticism and bad press but you can’t deny that the ability to remain a hit maker after being famous so early in life is a credit to either his singing or his management depending in your view.

04. GARETH GATES (2,998,000) 7 HITS

http://showbizgeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Screen-Shot-2013-03-09-at-15.56.26.png

7 hits in 20 months, that’s all it takes for Gates to be the biggest male soloist on this list. Runner up to Will Young on “Pop Idol” he of course launched his career with 1.3 million selling cover of “Unchained Melody” and within 12 months had scored 4 No 1 singles but it was again the curse of the second album that did the damage as it moved 11-32-55-73-out. In naturally resulted in him being dropped, mind you sleeping with Jordan didn’t help.
