January 23, 201510 yr I agree that all of those songs are awful, except "Changing," I didn't know why it was included. The charts always have many songs that aren't great, but the UK charts aren't near as bad as they were circa 2006-2009, when indie rock dominated, and pop and dance took a backseat. I also don't get the Sam Smith popularity, his voice is whiny and his songs are dull, and he seems like a sanctimonious and patronizing twat. Edited January 23, 201510 yr by Casey
January 24, 201510 yr second-hand embarrassment at you describing a song like Uptown Funk as 'trash', yet you tell people to buy California by Amelia Lily. Good lord.
January 24, 201510 yr "California" is good pop that appeals to pop music lovers. "Uptown Funk" is just generic drivel that appeals to the general public, like "Happy."
January 24, 201510 yr I personally love both tracks, I don't think it's right to say that Uptown Funk is "generic drivel" cause it evidently isn't, it's quite different to a lot of stuff out at the moment and that's why it's so big. Equally, I think it's wrong to call people out for preferring California (I prefer it myself tbh and it is a good little pop track). Just let people have their opinions.
January 24, 201510 yr "California" is good pop that appeals to pop music lovers. "Uptown Funk" is just generic drivel that appeals to the general public, like "Happy." so much wrong with the above statement that I just can't
January 24, 201510 yr It's not 'wrong' per se, but it isn't half a ridiculously sweeping and patronising statement. Edited January 24, 201510 yr by Chez Wombat
January 24, 201510 yr It's not 'wrong' per se, but it isn't half a ridiculously sweeping and patronising statement. Oh I agree, I think it was a silly thing to say really and as you said, very patronising, but equally, he is entitled to his opinion. Just...not going about it in the best way really.
January 24, 201510 yr Imo not liking something because it's directed at the "general public" (or the impression that it is) or because it appeals to them is always a little wrongheaded, to say the least, and isn't dissimilar to the way, say, classic rock fans dismiss chart pop as a whole. (Also "Uptown Funk" is my favorite worldwide hit in forever and honestly if the whole world can get behind such a track then I'm all for ~lowest-common-denominator~ populism)
January 24, 201510 yr I like 'Take me to church' and not everyone's the same music taste wise. In contrast, I hate All Of Me but I don't mind others liking it.
January 24, 201510 yr young white male pop does very well because it appeals to such a broad demographic, a lot of pop cannot attract the likes of the archetypal young straight white male, add to that cross-gender appeal. it's the sort of music that percolates deep into society hence why it lingers around for so long. what does sort of irk me are the suggestions that ed sheeran is a particularly good artist. his music is utterly cliched, bereft of any soul or meaning and no different to the prefabricated pop of the 90s; it's just under a false veil of authenticity.
January 24, 201510 yr As much as I love 'Happy', 'Uptown Funk' has so much more going towards it than that, please don't say the two are similar. Just because it looks like the two will have the same success does not mean that they are the same.
January 24, 201510 yr "California" is good pop that appeals to pop music lovers. "Uptown Funk" is just generic drivel that appeals to the general public, like "Happy." I son't think either Happy or Uptown Funk are by any means generic :???: Okay so sure both of them have done extremely well with the GP but that doesn't make either of them generic.
January 24, 201510 yr they aren't similar musically but they are similar in their cross-demographic appeal; both are easy to listen to, feel good pop which fall back on more old school inspiration.
January 25, 201510 yr It's all just different people's opinions. Obviously a ton of people like both "Uptown Funk" and "Happy," but they're too calculated and dull for my tastes. It's not the type of pop music I prefer. Not because they're sung by men, they just don't pique my interest. Edited January 25, 201510 yr by Casey
January 25, 201510 yr Personally I think its great to enjoy a range of genres or a range of styles. I like Taylor Swift 'Shake it off and Kelly Clarkson catalouge but can enjoy rock and country for example. Its a good way to make friends for example. However I understand some people prefer pop or r'n'b. Also its about what is popular and selling and house music, male singers and Pop music are huge sellers in the music industry thats why indie/rock dont sell as much. Its not that Uk's much taste is 'shit' its just what is popular you never know in a few years time a different genre will dominate the charts. This is just my opinion anyway but good topic :D
