June 11, 201510 yr Exactly, I'm really struggling to see the point of this move now? I doubt albums are going to benefit really - it's not as if they're held back weeks on end and leaked but eligible sales are no more than 100 copies. One of the reasons is so that when a big new release album is released in Australia on Friday, it doesn't end up all over the Internet over the weekend before it's released in the UK and U.S. the following Monday/Tuesday. Also because they think people are more in the mood to seek out new music at the start of the weekend rather than a Monday, so could theoretically help boost sales globally.
June 11, 201510 yr One idea could have been is do a bit like they did pre October 1987, Chart released with Greg as planned, (BTW the time he is going to take every week is not much longer than what was done both on the Lunchtime show and Drivetime show on the Tuesday when the chart release day was that), and do a 3 hour countdown on Sunday with Clara as usual.
June 11, 201510 yr Nobody cares about the chart enough anymore for them to do 2 chart shows. The Friday move means they can still reveal the chart first without wasting extra air time.
June 11, 201510 yr Anyone who still wants to spend 3 hours on Sunday listening to the same 35 songs in a slightly different order plus 5 frontloaded releases that'll be gone next week, can tune in to the Big Top 40.

June 11, 201510 yr Based on this thread, people seem to forget that the chart shows moves to Friday because the global release date will be Friday from summer onwards. So why have the show on Sunday if the chart week is Friday-Thursday?
June 11, 201510 yr First and foremost, it means fans can now get new music on the same day worldwide rather than having to wait for their own national release day, putting an end to fans being unable to access music in their own country when it is legally available elsewhere. Blatantly specious as the release schedule shows tracks still being held back in the UK beyond July whilst being available virtually everywhere else...  Holding back lead singles, will more often than not delay the release of the parent album as well. Consumers in other territories are not going to tolerate albums being pushed back to accommodate the bizarre UK pre-order culture.

Come on, that's a ridiculous idea. The chart show is tedious enough right now - if the chart had already been revealed it would be a complete waste of time. I don't know why people are complaining so much about the show being cut down and put on a Friday. So long as they play all the new entries and most of the top 20 as is likely, it's actually going to be a better show.

June 12, 201510 yr http://www.musicweek.com/cimages/e0313678e12ff3ae47f659ae862ed36b.jpg Global release day kicks off on July 10, New Music Fridays branding revealed by Tom Pakinkis Source: MW Branding for music’s global release day has been revealed, with ‘New Music Fridays’ kicking off on July 10. The New Music Friday logo will be made available for retail and artist campaigns to inform consumers of the globally aligned initiative and create a sense of event around new releases. “There used to be more of a sense [of occasion] around new music releases,” IFPI CEO Frances Moore told Music Week. “When I was younger you’d be very excited about what was coming out and would run to spend your pocket money on the latest release. By introducing a global release day, it means that music will be available everywhere around the world at the same time. “It’ll create a simultaneous excitement around the world, bringing a new sense of occasion and focus on the release of new music globally.” Moore was keen to emphasise, however, that any New Music Friday campaigns would be rolled out gradually, with the July date having being chosen in order to give the best chance of a smooth transition for territories that don’t already release music on a Friday. “What’s important is making sure that any glitches they are picked up,” she explained. “This is a campaign that will go on permanently and we want it to be smooth and seamless. “Around July there will be some events in stores and so on, but the real impetus will be with the bulk of the new releases coming after the summer holidays.” Moore said that she expects to see an uplift in music sales as a result of the new music release day change due to a rise in spontaneous purchases. “This has been very much led by the consumers, who are telling us they want Friday and Saturday [to be the release day for new music]. That’s when they’re in the stores, so we believe that there will be uplift [in music sales] due to spontaneous purchases as well as planned purchases.” A BPI commissioned survey of 2,016 British adults, carried out by Ipsos MORI last year, showed that, among respondents who buy or stream newly-released music and who expressed a preference for it to be released on a specific day, Saturday (37%) came out on top ahead of Friday (23%) as the next favoured option. By contrast, only 15% of the group wanted to see releases continue on a Monday (when new music is currently released in the UK), ahead of Sunday (10%), Wednesday (7%) and Tuesday/Thursday (4% each). “In a business that is increasingly digital and global, the logic for a global release day is compelling,” said BPI chief executive Geoff Taylor. “Fans don’t understand why they have to wait to legally access music that has already been released in other countries. “Unifying the day of release inevitably means some countries are having to switch days, but it makes sense to consider the time of the week when interest in entertainment, digital activity and physical footfall is building towards its peak. Fans are telling us they would like new music ready for the weekend, so Friday appears the best choice and it is supported by the research we undertook with consumers. We need to do everything we can to serve the fans and build our business around that.”
June 12, 201510 yr The logo looks very good. I must say I'm rather excited by the prospect of the Friday release date actually happening now - not that I wasn't before, it just felt for ages like it was never going to happen. I reckon the biggest spike of all will be the last Friday of July - it's payday for most people then so I think that's when the real sales action will kick in.
June 12, 201510 yr First change of day for chart show since Alan Freeman began Pick Of The Pops in 1962. Mind you the length of the singles chart has been expanding since those days. January 1940 to November 1952 - Top 30 (78s only) 14 November 1952 to September 1954 - Top 12 01 October 1954 chart becomes Top 20 13 April 1956 chart becomes Top 30 10 March 1960 chart becomes Top 50 06 May 1978 chart becomes Top 75 02 Jan 1983 chart becomes Top 100 Quite a few countries already have the chart date on Fridays including, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Canada, Sweden, Denmark & European chart Edited June 12, 201510 yr by poppet15
June 12, 201510 yr What? That doesn't happen and there's no reason why it would now. Precisely - that's why the Global Release Day press release is a nonsense! <_< A prime example of holding back singles delaying the UK release of the album is Zedd's 'True Colors' out worldwide since 18th May, but not out here until 6th July~ :nocheer:

In some countries they even play their full charts on their chart shows such as Germany & Holland playing the full Top 100s unlike here in the UK where the BBC only use the Top 40 when the full chart is Top 100. That's why I go to legal European sites rather than wait for the UK. And also listen to European Radio Stations. Edited June 13, 201510 yr by poppet15
June 13, 201510 yr I'm looking forward to this change. Friday releases means I'll spend more because I'm in a better mood than on Monday's ;) AND I'll finally start listening to the charts again!!! I can't spend 3 hours of my life listening to it on Sunday's, BUT... I can now listen to it at work and because it's only 2 hours, there won't be as much shit music played :P
June 13, 201510 yr Btw this global initiative also means that all the new music will be released everywhere on the same day?! No delayed releases in the UK anymore? It would make sense, but if everything stays as it is now, the whole initiative makes no sense.
June 13, 201510 yr Btw this global initiative also means that all the new music will be released everywhere on the same day?! No delayed releases in the UK anymore? It would make sense, but if everything stays as it is now, the whole initiative makes no sense. This has been touched on already :heehee: Delayed releases will not change, that system will still be used. It affects albums mostly. Currently, Ireland gets new albums on Fridays, the UK gets them on Mondays and the US on Tursdays (to name just a few examples). This means that the album can leak to other countries before the release. After the change, everyone will be getting new albums on Fridays, which means no leaks due to earlier dates. The example of Zedd from Ethan is very different! The label have chosen to release that album later in the UK so it's not covered by this scheme. All it does is change the day music is released on, not change the strategies labels use to release the music.
