EVERGLOW - La Di Da

EVERGLOW FOREVER LET’S GO

And there it is. Our first K-pop entry.

Being an angel didn’t work out so it’s off to Sin City we go. If anyone wants an Korean answer to Blinding Lights then this is it.

Expecting this to do horribly too so we’ll see who ends up liking it. Could be no one like last entry.

This is your first K-Pop entry??
To the main contest, yes, I sent Dalshabet to a spin-off once and in true Cody fashion it flopped

I think my 6th foreign language entry overall?

Yes Yes Yes

You know I adore Everglow and am obsessed with this!

I think Sihyeon is my bias now. I always end up switching between her, Aisha and E:U.

NOT US GETTING THE FIRST K-POP WINNER ON THE FIRST TRY :cheeseblock: :cheeseblock:

Thanks SO MUCH for the huge amount of support, a huge thank you to the Forevers and the rest of the pack who voted for this song, it was so nice to see so much love for the genre and I’m so glad EVERGLOW did it justice  also SEVEN 18’S HOLY COW!!! After starting off at rock bottom in 2020, Cor Lupus continues to show that hard work pays off.

I’ve kinda had a mini blueprint for where I wanted to go for next contest and I found three really good songs, I’m thinking of just sending one of each to the next three contests tho :P

 congrats on finally breaking the K-Pop curse x

All it took was a ripoff of 'Nie Z Tej Ziemi' :basil:

CRIMER - Eyes Off Me

I think it’s safe to say that EVERGLOW saved us from perpetual irrelevancy. We got a K-pop winner - what’s next for us? All eyes are on us this time.

Back to the safe space of synthpop we go. Aiming for redemption for Ultra Music’s disastrous attempt from two contests ago, Swiss artist CRIMER delivers a catchy bop similar to The Weeknd during the Starboy era. We’ve autoqualified for the final, can this track prove that we’re back for good?

BJSC 130 | CRIMER - Eyes Off Me | 11th (214 points)

I think looking back, this year started with interest in BJSC at an all time low and it was really hard to pick it back up, but these two entries have really gotten me back in the groove, so it's nice to wrap up the year with a string of hits. This year has been relatively weaker than the past three, but I also haven't loved my entries as much as the past three years, so it fits.

I... might do an EOY ranking thing? I just gotta figure out what to do first though

TBO XI | FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION

ROUND 1 | BJSC 121 | E^ST - Talk Deep

ROUND 3 | BJSC 124 | The Aces - Daydream

ROUND 4 | BJSC 129 | EVERGLOW - La Di Da

(I believe those are the right ones according to pre-qualification requirements)

The breakdown. The comeback. The triumph.

Thanks to everyone who made this possible and supported us through the year!

CL2020: HOW IT STARTED | HOW IT'S GOING

gGyl4FK.jpg

So. 2020. It was... a year.

With the world in a 10 month long (and counting) lockdown, arcades and other industries running extinct, and humanity running into its last legs, BJSC got stronger than ever. I mean, it's not like everyone had other plans. They collectively threw out their calendars once the first lockdown started. And it was an interesting year for Cor Lupus. I mean, we're five years strong now. How did we even get here? Like that still baffles me.

Beginning the year, morale was low. The country suffered their first DNQ in years and... it wasn't pretty. We were starting off the year as flop countries. So then we developed the idea to do a mini-rebrand. No longer were we gonna be the EDM-centric chart darlings of the year before. This time we planned to send rock and rise from the ashes. That ended up getting vetoed. Talk Deep sounded like a decent backup but from coming off the backs of a DNQ and getting vetoed, there was no confidence in it qualifying. Indeed it started our first DNQ streak. We were at an all time low. It was about to be goodbye. But there was no time to sulk, so I went along my vacation in the Philippines and voted after I got back... which was after the deadline.

In my mind, there was no recovery from this. Some of the greatest countries managed to escape getting two in a row but we couldn't do that. It looked like it was gonna be the end. We needed a Hail Mary. And that's exactly what we delivered. Literally. The mini-rebrand failed so Ave Maria was a turn back into familiar territory: a simple, nice trance song, cheap, but just cheap enough to work. This entry was crucial. If it didn't smash, it was proof that the magic we had was gone. Indeed it managed to qualify. However it couldn't manage the top 20. No top half finish meant that the comeback failed. It was over.

So we turned focus into the country's 50th anniversary entry, bringing back The Naked And Famous for another single from their latest era. Bury Us was almost cryptic in nature. Would we be burying our BJSC career? Or will we be burying this flop era behind us and start anew? At the same time the pandemic sent everyone bunkered into their homes and the contest grew back into post 100th contest days. While social life was dying out, the contest saw a new life. Bury Us ended up coming in the top 20, but lost the battle as the highest anniversary entry out of our BJSC 74 clan. That will come soon. However, a small hit meant that a small bit of magic was still there. A hit was a hit after all, but the battle back to where we were was still long and arduous and it still didn't come with any confidence for future entries.

Maybe that's why we didn't expect Daydream to become such a huge hit. It was cheap, it was fun, and it was totally against social distancing. But following a rough winter season, we weren't confident that this track will help the country bloom into decent success. It ended up coming 4th. This was a surprise considering how much we stood for "you're only as good as your last performance". Looking at odds, no one really called it to be a hit and focus for hype was elsewhere. Were we really back? Or was this just a fluke and we'd be back to treading water with the next month?

Plans for the next month were a bit shaky with two songs being flip flopped for the entry. We originally went with a dance track, but then switched to a dark pop song called Burn from scandipop outfit ARES. This was, for all intents and purposes, our most inspired entry in a long time, and there was some PTSD from the last time we reconfirmed, but it managed to qualify. In the end, it missed out on the top half, so it seemed like Daydream was a fluke and Cor Lupus was back to treading water. For now. Something HUGE was in the works to get the country back in the good graces of the contest. And for a while it seemed like that was gonna come to fruition...

Unfortunately we were beaten to Sweet Temptation and the song got vetoed anyway. So it looked like we had to say goodbye to a qualification. A eurodance track featuring Eurovision entrant Roxen was the replacement and with lukewarm responses it didn't seem like it would do well at all. I think this was around the time when I started to run out of ideas. It wasn't a track I regret sending, but it also wasn't one that was gonna go down in history. It picked up a few unlikely fans, notably attention from struggling rookie country Chestoria, and it landed at around the same place as ARES. Crisis averted, but with only two out of six hits, it was starting to become 2016 all over again. In retrospect this was also at the same time I was dealing with my grandfather's death so I probably shouldn't have entered, but it served as a good distraction.

Once again we were back to formulating a comeback, and Jessie Frye was our girl. A pure synthpop hit with the genre at its peak? Surely it was a recipe for success. And indeed it was with it having come top 10, and it's probably one of the best tracks I've sent that year. But looking at what went on leading up to the final results was pretty hard. It got an overwhelming amount of hype and support, but it seemed like that was all it was. Another overhyped track. But... maybe this genre was a good strategy to use, and it was one that would sweep the country at its feet later.

In the meantime we returned to dance by bringing in Panteros666, who had been conjuring up a slew of releases with Ultra Music. It was a nice enough song, not slated to do well, but a nice callback to dance after having to appease the new pop meta for the majority of the year. We didn't expect it to do this bad. Last was utterly disgusting for this. This was a major bomb and send us hurdling back to square one.

So where did that leave Cor Lupus? The highest anniversary entrant accolade out of the BJSC 74 clan went to partners in crime Flynnonda with a brilliant Tame Impala track. Jadakissnia started with a bang and are still skyrocketing. Flynnonda had a huge Cinderella story and proceeded to create a huge breakout year for 2020. Cor Lupus, however, were just there. More known for meltdowns than a path to success. It was like we were the villain in our own hero's story. And... that's where we are.

Turns out God had other plans. In 5.5 years we had only attempted K-pop once, but in a spinoff, and in true Cor Lupus fashion, it flopped. EVERGLOW releasing La Di Da, however, was much more explosive. After three BLACKPINK-esque title tracks in a row since debut, La Di Da was much more different and it captivated just about anyone who listened to the trailer. Indeed it was released after BJSC 128, so we couldn't send it there, but plans were made to send it to 129 as our Halloween entry for the main cycle. But the only thing that was of the Halloween spirit was the aesthetic; it wasn't traditionally Halloween, but it had callbacks to Sin City and other Quentin Tarantino projects, and thus it became our first K-pop main entry. This was a huge risk. K-pop had a shaky history in the contest despite a devout audience and there were no promises in it doing well again, but this time would be different. The girls already had two entries landing in the teens, and the song drew similarities to, not BLACKPINK, but Blinding Lights, the biggest song of the year. EVERGLOW ended up promoting during the week leading up to Halloween and their goodbye stage for promotions involved several costumes. The girls also released a Halloween-friendly performance video with different costumes. Jackpot. Cor Lupus finally had a bonafide Halloween entry, and just in time too.

It didn't just grab the attention of Hushkanukia, who had grown into K-pop aficionados over the course of the year and were responsible for two of the best K-pop entries that year, but just about every other participant. Support was massive, and the odds painted it to become a triumph for the genre as a whole. At this point we were wising up to the hype. Why get burned once again after Ocean failed to deliver? plug.dj sessions run their course, and it was revealed that La Di Da had the best reaction for the semi. The song qualifies, along with the other two K-pop songs in the mix. Okay, but it's gonna take a lot to make up for Jessie Frye. Well, fine. The week passes, more winning predictions come in. The plug sessions close out with La Di Da taking home the gold. That does it. It's EVERGLOW time. Results come in, and it picks up an obvious 18. Then it picks up a slew of points, a second 18, and then a quick third. Something huge managed to happen. The support continued to rush in, and La Di Da ended up winning the entire competition. After 13 years, the contest finally logs in a K-pop winner. This ended up not just being a comeback, but being a complete revival. It was like using a Phoenix Down on our BJSC career and instilling a battle cry. Looks like we got that big victory after all.

The year wasn't over yet. Besides meltdowns, we've been plagued with two things, both regarding hosting. Not only were final results riddled with major errors such as wrong qualifiers or weird placements, but we had always bombed hard after winning. Armed with a contest concept and an entry that continued La Di Da's path to sending songs influenced by The Weeknd, we opened BJSC 130 with a sonic blast. With K/DA as figureheads, the contest treks onward, and CRIMER's Eyes Off Me represents the country. After fighting tooth and nail throughout the year, this was our chance to prove that we can achieve consecutive successes. All we needed was a top half finish. The contest rolled on, with a few minor mishaps, but we managed to meet our goals. No huge input errors means that we got to show off our professionalism, and CRIMER coming in 11th meant that we got to secure another hit. Mission accomplished.

So that's 2020. No, we're not out of the woods yet. 2020 was still a successful year but it was our least successful one in ages. 57 contests in and Cor Lupus are still in that limbo of proving ourselves, but I think we can rest easy now knowing that self-doubt is out of the question for now. The last two entries are amongst our faves of all time. We're regressing in yearly success, but we're still doing well. EVERGLOW helped in both reviving interest and securing our legacy. To think that just a year prior, it was almost goodbye. Now, there's light at the end of the tunnel, and after a tumultuous year, our path is clearer than ever. We're not the leading ladies of Jadakissnia, nor are we the underdogs of Flynnonda. We're comeback kids. Fighters. Warriors. We fought for our place at the table, and we'll keep fighting, because that's what we're built for.

SICKOTOY x Misha Miller - Touché

New year, new sponsor, new lease on life. 2021 starts off with another foray into dance and another Romanian producer. We also get to add another country in Moldova (represented by Misha Miller, the tracks vocalist) and a new language we’re sending in that French chorus.

They say big things come in small packages, can this two and a half minute dance track make a huge impact?

WE'RE REBRANDING

No, we're not doing a name change, just a little aesthetic change. After high hopes for this year to be less disastrous were dashed this contest and goodwill between the country and others declining rapidly, we've decided that we're going to take the mantle of being the Pewdiepie of the BJSC74 squad. Known by the general public but very much the villain of everyone's story. So with that we're revealing a brand new flag:

VlMStv1.jpg

Kinda inspired by Aespa, a new K-pop group. No, we're not thinking about sending them :P

I might shoot off some ideas later but we're defo going cheap for the comeback
