Philter - Revolver

2011

One of two songs in this chart that I discovered through Unknown Pleasures. Back in 2011 Unknown Pleasures threw up multiple great tracks in each round. This is just such a cute song - twee vocals, banjo, whistling and a rush of a chorus! I never really liked much else from Philter.

Burial - Come Down To Us

2013

In which Will Bevan creates his most openly emotional piece of music yet. Well - two pieces of music actually, as Come Down to Us is a two part study in taking hooks from r'n'b hits from a parallel dimension and using them in ways that work without the need for a verse/chorus structure. I love the way all the uber-hipsters loved it just because it had the Burial brand on it. If he started out with this 8 years ago they wouldn't go near it, citing it as far too obviously gorgeous.

In some senses I think he should have ordered them in reverse as the second part is less epic, in the traditional sense of the word.

Azelia Banks ft Lazy Jay - 212

2011

One of the two or three tracks in this chart that's neither a huger seller nor a complete #110 flop.

If only she'd pronounce "premier" properly.

Antony and the Johnsons - Cut the World

2012

Managing to convey the warmth of the live "Antony" experience, of which I have partaken twice, is almost impossible via studio recordings so they recorded a live album instead. This is customarily elegant and restrained. Ravishing.

Rihanna feat. Nobody else, for once - Diamnnds

2012

And so to another million seller - there's several left in this countdown. The towering melody in Sia's deft song-writing is perfect for Rihanna voice - which is no surprise as their voices are not too dissimilar. The verses are the main attraction in this song.

I toyed with the idea of including We Found Love and/or Only Girl but Diamonds, I feel, will outlast those two.

Really liking a lot of your mainstream picks! 'Elastic Heart' (and I agree that the version with The Weeknd is superior), '212', 'Rolling In The Deep' and 'Diamonds' are all outstanding tracks and haven't begun to lose their appeal, the latter two being among my favorite smash hits of the last few years (and coincidentally, crossed the million mark in UK sales on the same week last year, which I always found apt ^_^).

I appreciate being reminded of 'Mowgli's Road' as well! I remember being fascinated by that when I first heard it, before quickly becoming addicted. For me, one of the most effective introductions to any artist ever!

I wish I'd have heard Mowgli's Road first. Unfortunately, I heard Hollywood and I Am Not a Robot first and they put me right off Marina for ages.

I wouldn't let some else's opinion of a great song ruin it for me.

How can you not like Somebody That I Used to Know? It's got a man AND a woman on it?

Pallers - The Kiss

2010

The second and final track in this countdown that I discovered through Unknown Pleasures. This didn't even get full marks from me way back in Unknown Pleasures 1 but it soon after grew to be my favourite thing ever to come out of any round that competition. In usual Scandinavian ways, it's melancholic and almost glacial. It just builds in the most gorgeous way.

Through the winteriness of it all there's something Balearic about the guitars. Sublime.

Gotye feat. Kimbra - Somebody That I Used To Know

2011

There is no way in hell that I would have believe that this would become a million seller. It's just too quirky.

After all this time it's the small things that make the difference - Gotye's own backing vocals are perfectly placed. Kimbra is so understated. It never once says "I'm going to sell bucket loads".

Lady Gaga - Marry The Night

2011

My favourite single from Born this Way. For the most part it's a decent pop song with it's chain-sawing synth until about half way through it becomes swamped in a trite middle 8.

Just as you think it's all going to end terribly it rises to greater heights as the synths are notched up a place for one more chorus before transforming into barnstorming electro-squelch monster where a dozen robo-Gagas come pile diving from nowhere and the pervasive chords take you to heaven. Oh, and there's cow-bells!

Gaga's best of the 2010s for me is “Telephone”, I kinda lost interest after that sadly which is a shame as I really enjoyed The Fame Monster as an EP.

Telephone is good but she had a tough job following Bad Romance.
