Singles Sales and chart positions don't equal popularity though.

Cheryl. She had two back-to-back #1 singles last year, and holds the record for the most #1 singles (5) in UK chart history for a British Female.

Ha, I was wondering when someone would mention the Saturdays on this thread

Of course there are American acts that are very popular here. Examples of these would be:

Beyonce

Chris Brown

Drake

Eminem

Jay Z

Justin Timberlake

Kanye West

Kendrick Lamar

Nicki Minaj

Rihanna

Usher

I think it's fair to say she's pretty much over now.

yeah, there's no way Cheryl will be remembered as a classic singer, in the same way that Geri Halliwell, who previously held the record, isn't a classic either

I wouldn't say that - if/when she releases a new single from her next era and ties it up with an X Factor performance, she could quite easily get another reasonably sized hit. But she won't be remembered as a classic singer, agreed there.

If you think of classic British singers - Kate Bush, Dusty Springfield, Annie Lennox you mind never says 'Chery Cole' or 'Gerri Halliwel' instinctually....and those three never even had back to back number 1s.

I'm having trouble identifying the last British female singer to have gained classic status.....

PJ Harvey just doesn't fit the mold.

Being popular means they have to have something about them. So no.

WHOOSH!

No, I did get it. But it might need explaining so that certain members (Lee) don't take it seriously.
