Yes the way i work my threads is that i give all the sales to the credited acts, even featured ones as it would be impossible and subjective to predict as to why people bought something.

195. (148) WILL.I.AM (1,738,000) 2013 0.9998

There are eight solo artists who also appear on this list as part of a regular group (excluding Band Aid) and here’s one of them. Will.i.am has been a busy man since Black Eyed Peas went on a break becoming a permanent fixture on “The Voice” and releasing a string of singles which in 2013 saw him sell 1.6 million singles and a few albums as well. In truth he’d always run his solo projects side by side with his BEP work and has now scored 14 top 10 singles including 5 chart toppers.

Relatives of Motown records creator Berry Gordy, Redfoo and Sky Blu got their first taste of chart success back in 2009 before hitting the top on David Guetta’s “Gettin Over You” in 2010, but it was their first foray into the charts as the main act that bought the duo their real fame. “Sexy and I Know It” and “Part Rock Anthem” pretty much blanketed the plant for them in 2011 and got them a guest spot on Madonna’s 2012 Superbowl appearance, they surprised most when then they announced they were going on hiatus in 2012 just as they hit the big time.

http://i.toau-media.com/contentFiles/image/sydney/events/music/taylor-swift-2013.jpg

From her roots in Country Swift had long been a big star in the US whilst the UK granted the singer only minimal success in the 00s when “Love Story” peaked at No 2 in 2009. It was the release of the much more mainstream pop album “Red” in 2012 that really brought her UK success and fame (dating Harry Styles didn’t harm her in that respect) and in 2013 she scored 3 top 10 singles from the album and it gave her another No 2 hit in “I Knew You Were Trouble”. On current form 2015 could prove her biggest year yet....

192 (197) THE PRODIGY (1,530,000) 1997 1.0289

Sometimes it’s all about timing, for all their singles success in 1996 it took the release of album “Fat Of The Land” plus a controversial video for “Smack My Bitch Up” to allow the group to chart on this list. Long time purveyors of dance music the Prodigy had gone from novelty rave to serious dance act since their debut back in 1992, and as recently as this year the band continue to hit the No 1 spot on the album charts.

“We Are Young” was brought to public attention via a Glee cover version which was topped off when the song was licensed to be used in a car commercial aired during the superbowl that year. It helped the song to spend 6 weeks at No 1 in the US and also helped the track top our charts for a week in June. Follow up “Some Nights” helped the account hitting the top 10.

190 (141) MACKLEMORE & RYAN LEWIS (1,767,000) 2013 1.0331

After becoming friends via My Space (how very 2006) Lewis and Ryan first collaborated back in 2009 but it wasn’t until 2013 that the duo hit the international charts with some force. “Thrift Shop” and “Can’t hold Us” spent a combined 11 weeks at No 1 in the US with the former topping the UK charts for a week, however all three of their singles for the year made our top 10 selling a combined total of just over 1.6 million.

Singles charts from the digital era really ruined this countdown.

For simple Prodigy is much bigger artist, than Fun and Macklemore.

Undoubtedly one of the biggest album sellers of the last 10 years the band took their name from a fictitious band in the New Order video for “Crystal” and in 2008 were back with a third album which came after the first two had both sold a million in their own right. As we can see “Day & Night” didn’t disappoint selling over 700k in just 5 weeks on top of their back catalogue which took their album sales to in excess of 1 million for the year.

Another man who can thank Simon Cowell for his chart career after Cowell signed him back in 2009, he co-wrote and co-produced Tinie Tempah’s “Pass Out” in 2010 which launched him as a chart name. By 2012 he released his debut album “Electronic Earth” and the ubiquitous “Beneath Your Beautiful” which powered from 85-1 after an “X Factor” performance that October.

There are a fair whack of Boybands on this list, understandable given the intense fanbase devotion they inspire in their usually short chart life so it’s time to appreciate The Wanted. 2011 was undoubtedly their best year, it started off with the band releasing the Comic Relief” single “Gold Forever” which was topped up by their second chart topper (and best seller) “Glad You Came”, the band are currently on “hiatus” as they say- more is promised.

I think you mean 2011 :)

Great stuff, though!

186 (189) PLACIDO DOMINGO (1,569,000) 1990 1.0521

One of the “Three Tenors” (there’s another one to come on this list) Domingo benefitted from the exposure and subsequent album release of the tenors performance at the world cup in Italy that year. The Album “In Concert” shifted a million that year and indeed only around 10,000 of these sales are generated by singles by him- of all the acts on this rundown only one act has sold less singles in their respective best selling year.

185 (160) RITA ORA (1,669,000) 2012 1.0534

http://jonalisblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/ritaorathumb1.png

As starts to a career go you really can’t top a hat-trick of No 1 hits, that’s how Ora started out in 2012 with the threesome “Hot Right Now”, “How We Do” and “R.I.P” becoming the first female act to achieve this accolade. Buoyed by her success the album similarly went to No 1 and she supported Coldplay on their Mylo Xyloto tour. That second album has a lot to live up to.

Back in 2000 Sia looked like a one hit wonder when “Taken For Granted” peaked at No 10, then nothing more or less until she provided the vocals for David Guetta’s “Titanium”- that is on paper, she was of course still making music and writing tracks for other acts. In addition to that million selling single in 2012 she also sang on Flo Rida’s “Wild Ones” as well writing chart toppers for Ne-Yo and Rihanna that year.

183 (70) THE BEATLES (2,333,000) 2000 1.0782

http://www.geeksofdoom.com/GoD/img/2013/03/2013-03-21-the_beatles_1963_2-533x337.jpg

The only act on this list who sold zero singles in their best year, not that that matters when you can shift 2.3 million albums including half a million of your 30 year old back catalogue. Most of those sales were of course generated by the “1” album which sold 319k in its first week, a million in 4 weeks and 1.85 million in the last 7 weeks of the year, it was issued to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the group’s split and was the first time the group’s chart toppers were all available on one CD.

182 (184) RAZORLIGHT (1,580,000) 2006 1.0802

http://www.100xr.com/artists/R/Razorlight/Razorlight.jpg

Ah Johnny Borrell, if only his talent matched his ego then Razorlight would still be a massive band now, but back in 2006 all looked rosy in the world. Their second album “Razorlight” sold a million and provided them with a No 1 single “America” but his rather abrasive public persona alienated much of the indie press and the next album met with luke warm reviews and middling sales, line up changes followed and the band are currently seeking a new record label, Borrell’s first solo album notoriously missed the missed top 100 in 2013 selling just 594 copies in its first week.

http://www.freeallimages.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/iggy-azalea-2014-4.jpg

There are 10 acts on this list who can claim 2014 as their best year and can sell over one and a half million albums and singles to celebrate the fact. First up is Iggy who claimed three top 20 singles before 2014 though nothing that sold on any kind of significant level, she did return the favour of signing her initially to T.I who scored a No 10 hit with “Change Your Life”. Collaborations with Rita Ora, Charlie XCX and of course Ariana Grande granted her big sales during the year including a No 1 single, and was enhanced with the arrival of her debut album “A New Classic”. In the US she became the first act since Ashanti to hold the top 2 positions in the same week when “Fancy” and “Problem” ruled the roost.

Poor, forgotten Ashanti :(

Poor, forgotten Ashanti :(

I'm pretty sure it was reported everywhere that it was since the Beatles, but I think you're right, Ok so one of those was a "feature" but then so was Azalea's-' I'll alter the post.

EDIT: yes from the OCC report at the time although I had confused "first two" so my bad really:

"Australian rapper Iggy Azalea has joined The Beatles to become the second act in history to hold both the Number 1 and Number 2 positions simultaneously, with their first two US Billboard Hot 100 hits.

The feat of claiming both the Number 1 and Number 2 spots with an artist's first two US Billboard Hot 100 hits has only previously been claimed by legendary British rock band, The Beatles. In 1964, the Liverpool quartet’s I Want To Hold Your Hand stormed to Number 1 while She Loves You followed at Number 2."
