I was hoping Hey Mama might've gone top 10 this week, but at least it's still a good climb!

Chart Highlights

• Wiz Khalifa's "See You Again" remains at #1 for a fourth week. It stays on top on Digital Songs (285,000 copies sold), Streaming Songs, and On-Demand Songs, and climbs into the Radio Songs top 10 at #7, the week's best airplay gainer. Chart trivia from Billboard: below "SYA", Fetty Wap's "Trap Queen" rises to #2, marking the first time that two "hip-hop-based rap tracks" by male rappers have locked out the top two since 2009, when Flo Rida's "Right Round" and T.I.'s "Dead and Gone" ranked at #1 and #2 respectively. This is kind of dubious as like most Flo Rida songs "Right Round" was made for pop radio, but it appears the criteria they used was that both songs had to chart on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, which "Right Round" did (#63). Ok, I guess.

• WALK THE MOON's "Shut Up and Dance" becomes the group's first top-5 hit. The song ranks at #2 on Digital Songs this week with 136,000 copies sold, and it also jumps into the Radio Songs top 5. The last rock band to chart in the Hot 100 top 5 were Bastille with "Pompeii" last year.

• T-Wayne's "Nasty Freestyle" jumps to #9, giving the rapper his first top-10. The viral hit also flies into the top 10 on Digital Songs (106,000 copies sold) and Streaming Songs (the week's best gainer) but has seen very little airplay. Further down the chart, Bandit Gang Marco's "Nasty", the song from which "Nasty Freestyle" takes its instrumental, jumps to #65.

• Further Down: Andy Grammer earns his first top-20 hit as "Honey, I'm Good." moves 11 spots to #17; George Ezra leaps to #37 with "Budapest", his first top-40 hit; and Silento also earns his first top-40 with "Watch Me", the second social-media-driven hit to chart this week. (A third, Chedda da Connect's "Flicka da Wrist", debuts at #94.) Below the top 50, OMI's "Cheerleader" and Rich Homie Quan's "Flex (Ooh Ooh Ooh)" make big 30+ positional gains in their second weeks to #63 and #66 respectively.

I'm really interested in seeing how far "Trap Queen" can climb on pop radio, because the contrast between how little I've heard it on pop and how high it's gone on the Hot 100 is very striking. Because I have no life, I looked into this last night, and by my count, there are only five songs in the last five years to have charted as high on the Hot 100 without going top ten on pop: "Black and Yellow", "Harlem Shake", "Best Song Ever", "Drunk in Love", and "Anaconda". Three are songs by superstars that were boosted in some way by some sort of hype, so they aren't really comparable to a song by a hip-hop newcomer. One is a meme, so it doesn't count, for obvious reasons. Which leaves us "Black and Yellow", but iirc that got to #1 because of hype from the Super Bowl. (Wiz Khalifa's hometown team, the Steelers, were playing, and black and yellow are their team colors.)

 

So essentially, "Trap Queen" is the first hit in quite a while to get this high on its own merit as a song largely without the help of pop radio. Idk if that's interesting to anyone else, but it's kind of indicative of how segregated pop and urban have been the past few years, despite the latter still clearly being influential enough to push a song into the top 10 every now and again.

 

Also, I saw this mentioned in another forum, but "Riptide"'s longevity was impressive—44 weeks on the chart for a song that never went past #30. There's a probably a record there somewhere.

Pop radio and urban radio have actually been sharing a lot of hits in 2013, 2014 and 2015. But in 2011 and 2012 there were hardly any. Only Super Bass, 5 O'Clock, Girl On Fire and a few others.

It's true that pop and urban do share hits, but it seems like a lot of those hits are ready-made for pop radio anyway—you mentioned "Girl on Fire" and "Super Bass", which are good examples. I guess I'm talking more about songs with sounds that are clearly central to urban. Of course a lot of that stuff isn't made for pop and doesn't have to cross over, but plenty of it also has potential for pop success, especially if they're proving popular enough to go top ten on the Hot 100. Sometimes pop will play an urban hit if it's big enough that it can't ignore it, but it'll rarely go top 10 or even top 20. And sometimes it goes the other way around: urban radio playing big pop hits because they're basically being hammered on every pop station anyway. ("Uptown Funk!" is a recent example.)

 

And yeah, you're right about streaming—it really has given popular urban hits a lot more visibility on the charts.

^ Yeah, you're right. You get the urban -> pop crossovers like Don't Tell 'Em, I Don't Mind, Ayo, etc. And you get the pop -> urban crossovers like Thrift Shop, Latch, Fancy, etc. The pop -> urban ones have been more common recently, but it shows that pop music atm is hip hop influenced, since when pop music was dance influenced hardly any songs could cross over.

 

I think one of the weirdest ones in recent years was Royals by Lorde. Whilst the song clearly uses a hip hop beat (and has hip hop references in the lyrics), it's still by a female teenager from Australasia who was marketed as an alternative singer, so the fact that it managed to be a big urban radio hit was impressive (although I'm sure the remixes by Rick Ross and The Weeknd helped a bit).

Yeah, I think there's been a slight upswing in R&B on pop radio recently. I was really excited to see "Don't Tell 'Em" go top ten on pop late last year as it took a sound that had been gestating on urban radio for a while and turned it into a legitimate pop smash, and now it's a mini-trend for pop stars. (Which makes it all the more confusing why "2 On" wasn't able to herald the sound on pop months earlier!)

 

Pop radio is kind of weird right now though as there seem to be no prevailing trends. Dance-pop's decline allowed for a bit of R&B to creep back in, but there's also singer-songwriter stuff, EDM, trap-influenced pop, the odd European dance hit or two, retro throwbacks, Taylor Swift's take on pure pop, and whatever Meghan Trainor does (no shade, it's just a very weird thing to come about and it could only have come about now when pop is kind of at a free-for-all).
