#25 - Lani Hall - Never Say Never Again - 4.38

So Buzzjack has deigned the 1983 theme to Never Say Never Again to be the worst Bond theme song (yet to be released). It bagged 0's from Jark and Severin and 1's from Jester and popchartfreak. Indeed the only people to give it over a 5 were myself (9), Nelly S (8), Joe and Regina (7). I think this one is unfairly maligned, but then my 9 would suggest just that. It's perhaps not quite up to par with the big hitters of the 'proper' Bond films but it's got an undeniable chorus and charm about it, which is a lot more than can be said for the film itself which is a lazy, cheap and pointless remake of Thunderball with a VERY visibly aged Sean Connery. You know shit is bad when you look less capable and closer to your grave than good old SIR RODGE did in 1983.

#24 - Alicia Keys & Jack White - Another Way To Die - 4.5

A song that should count itself very lucky to miss the bottom spot up next, though not without its big fans in Mack, popchartfreak and Ultraviolence. I will attempt to write a commentary about this which is removed from my -1, but y'all know I will struggle. Is it because it's a tuneless mess? Is it because I cannot unlink it with what is probably the worst Bond film, certainly the worst this side of the millennium? Who knows. But yes, the song itself is probably the most 'Un-Bond' song ever, it's a million miles from a string laden ballad and it's despite Alicia being a big voxy female, she doesn't do a lot of big voxing.

I'd be lying if I said 'Never Say Never Again' hadn't been damaged by the film, but I must say it is growing as I listen to it now. I agree it has a level of charm about it, but it's lacking that je ne sais quoi that makes Bond theme sound like a Bond theme.

In regards to 'Another Way to Die', I think the production at the start is very Bond-like and I think the intention of rock vs. pop throughout was good, but it just didn't pull off. I think Alicia was the biggest let down - you're spot on with the "voxing" comment. My rating of 7 was too generous I think, probably based mostly on the intro. Whoever overlooks the creation of the Bond themes should have kept that bit and let Muse create the rest.

I'm too late but:

poor ol Jack n Alicia, I recall everybody hating it when it came out - I rather liked it's bold change of pace for a Bond Theme, while still having that basic Bond sound in the mix...

Is it just me or is the new Bond theme the worst of the lot?

Im not sure it's worse than Another Way To Die, but it certainly gives it a run for its $$$.

ps. Results are going to start again soon, this isn't another Johnkm forget it ever happened affair.

I get the impression people who dislike the Bond theme aren't fans of Sam Smith in the first place, would that be right?

No. People don't like it because it's shit. I like Sam and I love Bond and I can't bring myself to like this turd.

Fair do's. It just seemed to me that a lot of people had a predetermined opinion on the song because it's Sam Smith, which is fine I guess given his voice is similar on this as it is on his other songs. I don't get how people think it doesn't sound like a Bond theme though; even 'Another Way to Die' sounded like one.
