May 14, 20169 yr This is the first time I've thought that British people had a right to be disappointed with their result. I wouldn't have expected it much higher (17th? or so), but 23rd feels a tad unjust. Not sure why people didn't take to it.
May 15, 20169 yr It was the public as well who didn't like it. We did reasonably well on the Juries votes.
May 15, 20169 yr To be honest its been a disaster for the past 6, 7 years (bar Blue), always in the bottom 8, the way I see it is to come away from the big 5, as we put too much into it, at least we can put decent acts in the semi's, Tom Odell, Nina Nesbitt, Gabrielle Alpin, Eliza Doolittle, Nerina Pallot, Birdy etc etc, instead of sending Voice/ X Factor rejects I can't see Adele representing UK a, she probably ask for too much money. Coming 23rd this year is no improvement on last year. Looking back 2009 we came 2nd with Jade Ewan ever since than we just fell to pieces. I remember when we had A Song For Europe we had a decent track record, Love City Groove, Bardo  Frances Ruffelle, Live Report, maybe A Song For Europe needs to return.
May 15, 20169 yr I think we just need a GREAT song next year. I really like You're Not Alone but I don't think any of us ever expected it to finish higher than say 15th to 18th at best so this isn't exactly a huge shock, even though it's a shame. If we can just send a song that we all think has even a remote chance of winning or coming top five then that would be an improvement. I'm sure that between a very talented bunch of songwriters in the UK somebody could come up with a great/modern pop song (that is good in a lead single sort of way, not album track sort of way) and find a charismatic and memorable performer to front it. But I've already resigned myself to something as shit as Electro Velvet next year as the BBC's usual approach following what they believe to be a strong entry that fails is 'oh well...they didn't like that so let's stop putting effort in now'. May 15, 20169 yr Also...for what it's worth, I think we'd have done just as badly or worse with any of the others in our national final, apart from maybe Bianca, though it's hard to say how much better she would have done as I still don't think the public would have gone mad for it, or Darline if they'd really managed to improve their performance/stage chemistry.
May 15, 20169 yr Didn't everyone here really get behind Molly in 2014? I remember everyone saying that was a really great entry and all got 'winning vibes' from it, and that came.. er, 17th. Edited May 15, 20169 yr by Doctor Blind
May 15, 20169 yr UK should compare to what Australia sent. Imagine Dua Lipa doing Hotter Than Hell on ESC stage, you would have a winner right there. It's not that complicated really if you put effort in it. Edited May 15, 20169 yr by SKOB

Why don't we just send them in the final instead? That makes no sense. Also, we came 5th in 2009, not 2nd.

Also, we came 5th in 2009, not 2nd. It just feels BBC are getting tight which acts to send, I wouldn't mind seeing those acts in the final as well, they are not exactly big artists. Oops, I hit 2 instead of 5 on the keypad -_-
May 15, 20169 yr Didn't everyone here really get behind Molly in 2014? I remember everyone saying that was a really great entry and all got 'winning vibes' from it, and that came.. er, 17th. Yes a lot of us got behind it, and I still maintain that it's a great song, but it didn't translate live as well as on record. Anyway, regardless, one instance of us getting behind a decent UK entry and it not doing very well doesn't mean that we'll never do well with one, it depends what clicks with Europe. I really don't believe that European televoters would purposefully not vote for the UK if we sent their favourite entry. Sure the likes of Russia could send exactly the same song and performer as the UK and do better in the televote thanks to diaspora voting, so I'm not denying we have a hill to climb in that respect compared to other countries, but France just managed a comfortable top ten with a great song, and they're usually always down there with us as the bottom, so I'm certain that we could do the same thing if we really tried. And then with something like Euphoria, I really don't think it would matter who sent it, a clear emphatic winner will generally manage to overcome all the hurdles. So basically we need a song as great as that to be in with a shot!
May 15, 20169 yr I just think we need to send something a lot more exciting tbh, you have acts like Conchita and Jamala that generate lots of publicity and lots of discussion then you get the pretty inoffensive Joe & Jake. The song's ok, but pretty limp.
May 15, 20169 yr Imagine if Australia weren't in the competition? This song would have got 4 votes from the televote!
May 15, 20169 yr Imagine Dua Lipa doing Hotter Than Hell on ESC stage, you would have a winner right there. It's not that complicated really if you put effort in it. That was exactly what I was thinking when I first heard the song! It is basically a 3 minute song and I'm sure it would come top 10!
May 15, 20169 yr They are in the competition though so I'm not sure that point is really relevant. The point is that Australia are a new country to the ESC and it's debatable whether they should actually be there.. Maybe I should have said 'thank god Australia were allowed to participate again this year, otherwise we would only have 4 points'. Would that have made the point more relevant for you?
May 15, 20169 yr But juries count too. I don't really see the problem. One could also say that Australia was robbed because they won the juries but came 4th on televote because of the Polish immigrants and Russian empire.
