Posted September 22, 200618 yr Rating System: DUD-***** DUD = WORST, then we go up to *,**, ***, ****, ***** (Five Stars = obviously the best) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I Don't Feel Like Dancin' = ****3/4 {Thought this was the best on the album, untill i heard LOATW, but this is still an amazing, camp floorfiller} She's My Man = **** {They'll probably release this - GREAT tune} I Can't Decide = ***1/2 {Ooo, I love the chorus! Doubt it'd fair well if they decided to release} Lights = ****1/4 {Again, they could release this...One of the best on the album, the "heeee-heee-he" bits are SO addictive} Land Of A Thousand Words = ***** {Gorgeous. The ending of the song is AMAZING :o} Intermission = ***1/2 {DAFT...Sounds like a George Formby song } Kiss You Off = ****1/2 {Probably the 3rd best on the album. At their camp best, here. It sounds really commercial, so it'll get a release} Ooh = ***3/4 {Ooo, I can imagine hearing this on commercials everywhere...I'm picturing it on catwalks, too!} Paul McCartney = **** {SOOO camp ...Parts of the song remind me of Filthy/Gorgeous} The Other Side = ***1/4 {They seemed to have calmed down...Nice, melodic tune here} Might Tell You Tonight = *** {Filler, but still good} Everybody Wants The Same Thing = ***1/2 {This was the tune they performed at Live 8. Really addictive chorus, I can't stop singing it..} Transistor = *** {It's alright} --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- An AMAZING album. There's not ONE song which falls below ***, and that in itself is amazing. SIX songs reaching ****+ makes this better than the debut, and definately makes it THEE album of the year. Just great stuff. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BEST SONG: LAND OF A THOUSAND WORDS (*****) WORST SONG: TRANSISTOR (***) (And this isn't even a bad song) Album Average Star Rating: ****1/4
September 22, 200618 yr Can I start by saying this album is AMAZING. So much so I decided to review it! :dancing: KEY: 10 - F*cking amazing 9 - Fabulous song 8 - Great! 7 - Very good song 6 - Good song 5 - Average 4 - Not too good 3 - Bad 2 - Terrible 1 - Horrid 0 - Skip this song if you want good thoughts of the album 10 - I Don't Feel Like Dancin' - The song's been at number one for 5 weeks on my chart. 'Nuff said. It's fantastic, and if you're on here reading this you've almost certainly heard this song by now, so I won't waste time and space reviewing it. 8 - She's My Man - Incredibly catchy, would be a good choice for a single in the future. 10 - I Can't Decide - Very kinky song :kink: but still incredibly catchy, I've found myself humming this without realising it. The intro is probably the reason Wal-Mart refuse to stock the album. EDIT: A real grower! I love it now, best song on the album! 9 - Lights - A fabulous song, would be a great single choice, incredibly campy and fantastic. 10 - Land of a Thousand Words - FANTASTIC choice for second single from this album, the outro is amazing, and this is probably the best ballad the Scissor Sisters have ever done, better than Mary IMHO. Rivals IDFLD for best song on the album thus far. 7 - Intermission - Does what it says on the tin. Sounds very retro, probably the piano effect. 10 - Kiss You Off - Best song on the album? I love it, very 80s (I want to say Ana Matronic sounds like Blondie, but I'm not sure ) and it has an incredibly catchy chorus. Should be third single from the album. 10 - Ooh - Ooh, this reminds me a bit of Filthy/Gorgeous, wouldn't sound out of place at a fashion show. EDIT: Another grower! I've had this in my head now all week! 9 - Paul McCartney - Past the 'Kids In America' intro, this song is probably the campest on the entire album. Pure campy fun  7 - The Other Side - Seems very ambient and lazy, a good song, great to drive to I think. Very 80s-esque, my Mum thinks it sounds a bit Duran Duran :kink: 8 - Might Tell You Tonight - Wonderful song, a treat to listen to. 9 - Everybody Wants The Same Thing - Yes, it's THAT song. The one at Live 8 that belatedly charted at number 6 on my chart a year later :kink: It's fab and camp and I love it. CD 1 Average - 8.91/10 8 - Hairbaby - Possibly the oddest concept for a song EVER  But still fab! 7 - Contact High - I keep getting a 'Tainted Love' feeling with this song  6 - Almost Sorry - Very strange and un-Scissor like, but good in its difference ^_^ 6 - Transistor - This is one of the oddest songs on the whole album, very 80s like and psychadelic :o 8 - Making Ladies - FAB intro. This is Ta Dah's equivalent of 'The Skins'. 4 - I Don't Feel Like Dancin' Paper Faces Remix - Filllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr  CD 2 Average - 6.5/10 Overall Average - 9.8/10 - Fantastic album, however CD 2 slightly ruined the effect. I'd recommend you save your money and go for just CD 1, a fantastic disc, one of the best albums of the year. Edited October 6, 200618 yr by Betty's Messenger

September 23, 200618 yr Here goes: Scissor Sisters - Scissor Sisters (released 02/02/2004)http://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/9866058.JPG This five piece from New York with their love of British 1970s acts Pink Floyd, Elton John, Paul McCartney/Wings, David Bowie & Roxy Music meets Studio 54 / Saturday Night Fever disco dance music made a huge splash with their best selling album of 2004 & BRIT award winning debut album. Laura 10 - A perfect start to a great debut album. This uptempo ditty has a joyfully camp Elton John-esque melody pumping all the way through the track. Take Your Mama 9 - A grower. Now this track does sound like a lost Elton John album track from his classic 1972-76 period. Comfortably Numb 8 - Once you get over the initial shock & blasphemy of a very different sounding cover of THE classic Pink Floyd anthem, you soon realise that this is the glam-disco track that Goldfrapp have been trying to make thanks to Jake & Ana's falsetto harmonies. Mary 8 - This track reminds me of the late 1970 power ballads achieved by the likes of Styx, Toto or Supertramp. However it is a really good song, helped by the fact that the verse was heavily influenced by Pink Floyd's Great Gig In The Sky. Lovers In The Backseat 5 - A so so mid tempo track, that suggested that the SS did not have enough great songs to make this a true classic album. T*ts On The Radio 8 - Ana's vocal showcase. Very reminiscent of New Romantic era (early 1980s) UK electronic music. However the chorus is pure Saturday Night Fever era Bee Gees. Filthy/Gorgeous 8 - The campest track on the album. Another uptempo dance romp, with bitchy lyrics & another falsetto chorus. Music Is The Victim 6 - Another makeweight on the album. Another mid tempo track that does not really take off. Better Luck 6 - Ditto the track above. It Can't Come Quickly Enough 7 - An OK song. However it has the least memorable hooks. Return To Oz 10 - A fantastic finale for the album. This track has its Pink Floyd introspective musical influences running right through it, helped by a rousing chorus & a Wizard of Oz themed lyrics. The two bonus tracks - you are not missing anything IMHO.
September 23, 200618 yr Scissor Sisters - Ta-Dah (released 18/09/2006) http://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/PRESCISSORCD.JPG Scissor Sisters deliver their follow-up album 'Ta-Dah', which is, more eclectic, brilliant, life-affirming pop, and includes the Elton John collaboration lead single, the feverishly exhilarating No.1 'I Don't Feel Like Dancing' than their debut. However some of the playfulness of their debut has been lost to make a stronger & more consistent follow-up. I Don't Feel Like Dancin' 10 - This instant classic sounds like a cross between Disco era Bee Gees with a bit of the Four Seasons' December 63 (Oh What A Night) thrown in for good measure. She's My Man 9 - Another set of camp lyrics written over the top of a fantastic Elton John/Leo Sayer inspired 1970s uptempo track. I Can't Decide 8 - For some reason, this track reminds me of the Thomas the Tank Engine theme tune (eg. like Laura from their debut), only this track is not quite so good. However the vocals & lyrics are more Broadway inspired. Lights 9 - If I was their A&R guy, then I would have recommended this track as the second single. It has classic songwriting with a strong verse and chorus & reminds me a lot of classic Paul McCartney/Wings & ELO that you can dance to, with some great key changes. Land Of A Thousand Words 9 - Apparently this ballad is the next (winter) single. It is a very strong ballad that could be the nephew of Elton John's 1975 classic "Someone Saved My Life Tonight". Another great production, superior to that on their debut. Intermission 6 - A cabaret/music hall track that is not strong enough to catch fire. One of the few low points on the album. Kiss You Off 9 - Ana's vocal showcase. This track starts off as if it is an uptempo Pet Shop Boys track and does not disappoint, thanks to a great chorus, a brilliant early 1980s backing track that strangely reminds me of Kim Wilde's Kids In America. While the guitar part sounds like Andy Taylor out of Duran Duran. Ooh 8 - This uptempo dance track reminds me of Chic, largely thanks to the use of former Bowie cohort Carlos Alomar for his Rhythm Guitar parts. A great verse let down by a slightly underwhelming chorus. Paul McCartney 10 - My favourite track on the album. A great tribute to the world's most successful songwriter. Aptly enough it does remind me Macca's Coming Up & Goodnight Tonight largely thanks to the use of the horn section & arrangement. This has to be a single at some point. Other Side 10 - A new development in the Scissor Sisters sound. With this track they have gone about constructing a late Roxy Music-era track meets a Duran Duran ballad. I can easily imagine Bryan Ferry or Simon Le Bon singing the vocals on this track. Might Tell You Tonight 7 - After the previous four tracks, this is a disappointment. However this romantic/introspective track has the power to be a bit of a slow-burner and grow on me. Everybody Wants The Same Thing 8 - Yep, it is that track from Live8 that suggested that the Scissor Sisters might be another one album wonder. I like the Asian (Indian) lilt to the track, whilst the lyrics are another variation on the Beatles' anthemic "All You Need Is Love" with musical elements of Boston's More Than A Feeling thrown in. Bonus Track Transistor 6 - Like the debut, the album would be better without this bonus track.
