Apparently The Walking Dead's Sonequa Martin-Green has been announced for the lead role of Lieutenant Commander Rainford.

Wouldn't have been my first choice as I've found her a little bit lacking in charisma on The Walking Dead but very few actresses manage to truly shine on that show, so I'm cautiously optimistic about this. A real big star-making role for her.

Or, if it follows the pattern of other Trek series, a career killer.

Ha! At least she'll have the convention circuit forevermore.

It's been pushed back again with no confirmed air date 😪😪😪

Well, production IS underway so it's definitely HAPPENING. We just need to be patient. I mean it's been 12 years since we've had any new PROPER Star Trek so a few more months won't hurt.

I cannot express how utterly BEREFT I feel after watching that. It's basically just JJverse visuals on a TV budget. It's so bland and un-Trek, it might as well not even bother USING the bloody name. I wasn't expecting it to have all that much visual similarity with TOS, but given this is 10 years before it at least SOME acknowledgement and continuity in visual style, uniform and ship design would have been nice. Yes they have OLDE WORLDE communicators, but f*** off with that SINGLE CRUMB

And then to close it all off, that monstrous casio keyboard version of the iconic fanfare...

LMAO. The shot in the screengrab gets me EVERY TIME I SEE IT! There's already loads of 'Star Wars' memes going about.

It's seeming increasingly likely this WILL either be the JJverse or some third universe from all the promo material. I can't say I'm THRILLED about that, but the trailers have definitely reduced my anticipation considerably. I'll still be watching as soon as I'm done work tomorrow, though.
I'm not a Trekkie, I've only watched a couple of the films (which didn't exactly blow me away), but I'm willing to give this a chance.

Which films?

Be careful how you answer. I may not be a GM anymore but I can still BAN PEOPLE

Having watched the first 2 episodes I'm still on the fence about this

SPOILERS AHEAD

Martin-Green is great in the lead role even if the character is a strange contradiction. Supposedly too Vulcan according to her crew-mates but clearly the most emotionally compromised Starfleet member ever. However, her set up (if contrived) looks interesting going forward. The rest of the cast are largely forgettable aside from the captain (who's OK) and Sarek who apparently is indifferent to Starfleet for now.

Which brings me to the obvious canon issues. Nothing outrageous yet (except the Kilngon's look) and there's a 10 year gap till the original series date so room for development. I really don't like the new Klingon look and they should have gone more subtle in the progression from Enterprise era to the TOS look. Hopefully the series isn't only focused on them as a foe because we know how they end up and the pre-Next Gen era is the least interesting aspect of them even if it could be fun.

Otherwise it largely felt similar in tone and look to the Abrams films which isn't the best idea but this two parter feels more set up than story so I'm keen to see more and the new crew could change everything.

the 2009 one and 'Into Darkness' :P

oh dear

I'm sure John will give you the lowdown but I'll just say that those films are fine, but much less representative of Trek then they are of a knock-off Star Wars. The older films (and TV shows) are obviously less flashy but they're so much deeper, although not without their own screwups: just avoid any film that has a numeral with a multiple of 5 like the plague and check out the even numbers first (particularly Wrath Of Khan).

I won't have time to watch this now before I go away but I'll earmark it for watching when I get back, I'll be interested to see what they've done with it and if it does have more of the Trek spirit.

First episode thoughts: more contemporary in pace, and in character conflict, and less character development (so far, and one episode in), I almost found the rapid scenes a bit offputting, I'm used to LOTS of dialogue and plot, this one was more action-oriented. I enoyed the flashback scenes but I hope they drop them beyond the introductory shows unless they firmly form part of a plotline.

Generally, good, and will be interested to see how it progresses. I joined Netflix for the Trek....

When will this be shown on a proper TV channel? I have seen the original series and the other four versions and would like to watch this one.
