November 8, 20204 yr Season 2 of this (which I presume will focus on most of The Subtle Knife novel) starts tonight! Very quiet return, but they managed to mainly finish it before Covid so hurrah! I enjoyed the first one, I think it did so much more justice to the novel than the film did, I'm really interested to see where they go now as the books after the Golden Compass have never been filmed.
November 9, 20204 yr omg mess i didn't even know they did this pls someone who has read the books tell me is it worth watching bc i am still SCARRED from the film. the subtle knife is my fav as well so i hope it is done justice!!
November 19, 20204 yr I'm enjoying it. The Subtle Knife was my favourite book too, although there's little bits of it that I think have already been shown in Series 1 - it's 20 years since I last read the trilogy so my recollection of parts of it is hazy, despite it being one of the most enjoyable books I've ever read. The series is definitely better than the film was. It doesn't make the utterly amazing film/show that I had assumed it would when I read it all but it's a reasonable stab at it.
November 22, 20204 yr Author Loving the second series as much as the first, it’s fascinating to explore a lot further into the mythology with each episode widening open the world even further! Really liking the scholar in particular. Having not read the books, I’m very intrigued about dust. Andrew Scott next week too *.* I appreciate it’s incredibly expensive but I do wish they’d make more of these family semi-blockbuster shows. It’s great to have something that has more time than a film to build a world within and is completely different to anything else on TV. Really hoping there a plans for the third book to be adapted, don’t think I’ve heard anything solid yet despite them filming the first two back to back. It looks like the production team have started planning it though, hopefully we get an official announcement soon! I need to get round to reading the books! It was always something I avoided for some reason and I was never drawn to the film but I’ve adored the series so far.
December 22, 20204 yr Author renewed for a third and final season to adapt the final book :cheeseblock: apparently the original hope was to adapt it in two series but i’ll take it over an unfinished series! There was also going to be a Lord Asriel focused episode this series but they started filming on like the day before lockdown so plans had to be abandoned :( Having not read the books, the finale was v emotional but sets up a very intriguing next season.
December 24, 20222 yr Season 3 is out and all episodes are available on iPlayer, how generous! So hyped to see The Amber Spyglass adapted, it has some amazing moments I can't wait to see how they translate to screen. I've seen one so far and it's pretty good and has introduced some new characters from the books which I'm intrigued to see about.
December 24, 20222 yr We’ve finished it already… it’s a while since I read the books so I couldn’t remember much aside from the ending. As with the others, I think it was done well but ultimately the tv adaptation doesn’t quite have the magic and feeling I remember getting from the books
January 29, 20232 yr We’ve finished it already… it’s a while since I read the books so I couldn’t remember much aside from the ending. As with the others, I think it was done well but ultimately the tv adaptation doesn’t quite have the magic and feeling I remember getting from the books I completely agree with this. I enjoyed it but was also left feeling a little cold as it did not feel as magical as the books.
February 15, 20232 yr I think it's a tough ask to adapt this series and recapture that same magic. It's such an iconic and daring series despite having a lot of cinematic scope, there are some areas that are really tough to translate to screen. For my money, I'm just glad we've got a full, complete adaptation that's true to the spirit of the books, unlike that first terrible movie attempt. I've finally finished this (I'm terribly slow with finishing series so excuse the lateness x) there were some parts I wished they didn't skip over so quick, mainly Lyra leaving her daemon and the Mulefa's world and the relationship they built with Mary, but the Land of the Dead scenes and the ending two episodes were excellently done and made up for it and then some. I'm really glad they got to finish this, though am sad it's over. Maybe the Book of Dust could come next as they did seem to imply it from the end title card x
