Intrigue last night surrounded a leaked French intelligence report that Osama bin Laden had died of typhoid. The news spread rapidly around the globe, prompting a flurry of investigations by officials in Paris, Washington, London and Islamabad.

The report surfaced in a regional French newspaper which had obtained the leaked report claiming Saudi Arabian sources were 'convinced' the terror chief had been killed in August.

It prompted a flurry of official statements. After a remarkable day of rumour and counter-rumour, it appears the answer is that no one really knows. French President Jacques Chirac told reporters bin Laden's death '... has not been confirmed in any way whatsoever.' While a US intelligence official said: 'It's quite possible there was some talk of this, but in terms of being able to confirm this, that I can't do.'

The Saudis also moved rapidly to downplay the reports. A senior Saudi security source told The Observer: 'This report is an analysis by French intelligence of what they believe we think. And it is not true that either the Saudi government or Saudi intelligence are convinced Bin Laden is dead.'

In the end the only reliable sign comes from bin Laden himself through the video and audio tapes that he releases. His last videotape was released in late 2004, but his last audio tape was in July.

Frankly, I think it's irrelevant. Bin Laden is not in direct operational control of any of Al Qaeda's terror cells, in fact he never really has been, he's merely a figurehead as opposed to the ship's engine if you get my meaning. ALL of AQ's cells operate autonomously and he never had a direct hand in the 9/11 attacks, in fact I question whether or not Al Qaeda itself actually exists in the sense that groups such the IRA or Baader Meinhoff existed with an actual centralised structure. So whether he's alive or dead is not gonna affect terrorist actions in any way, shape or form.

Hundreads of people trying to kill you and you die because of a fever, this is pathetic.

Nah, it's 'ironic'....

Remember, he's getting on a bit as well.....

He's in his late 40s!

if he died plenty of new idiots will be ready to take his place.

Seriously?? I thought he was about 60!!

It's the beard that has the effect, he turns 50 in March though

I'm with Scott, I thought he was much older.

Anyway, I highly doubt that there is truth in it. There is a possibility he may have been ill. -_-

think about it he's been dead far longer than the French like to claim. He has not been on TV for ages. But as already said he's not part of the bigger picture.
It is irrelevant whether he is still Dead or Alive, he has done his job, thanks to a stupid American President.
Well if he is dead then GOOD

Well if he is dead then GOOD

Why? What is him being dead actually gonna achieve...? Terrorism aint gonna stop just cos Ole Beardy's snuffed it, he's doesn't run a country so there wont be the sort of Political Reform within a State that the death of some hated tyrant like, say, Franco would initiate; he doesn't have a franchise or a mandate. In fact the only thing him being dead will achieve will be that he'll be a 'martyr' and in 20/30 years' time Gap'll probably put his face on a sodding T-Shirt thus immortalizing him forever.....

i agree, its irrelevant.

I agree, it's irrelevant, but I agree that "good" ... yep, there will still be terrorists and the world will still continue to blow each other up until there's nothing left ... but it's one less to worry about.

I was talking about this with a friend of mine a while ago, and he said if the Americans had any real need to kill Osama Bin Laden they would have done it by now. I agree with him.

The Bush Admin needs Bin Laden alive let's face it. He's an easily identifiable 'bogey-man' to which America can project all its fears and hatred onto...

Well, As Ringo starrr once said "...You Cant fight Lightning....The best Thing a Man Can Do is eat meat whilst drumming"

Eating meat really is best for him and hos recovery you know. He did have two heart attacks (Im Not Surprised, although i have listened to the WHOLE (!!) "Stop And Take The Time To Smell The roses" Album
