January 7, 20169 yr Very pleasantly surprised with the fact that NAO and Alessia Cara came both in the top 3, I was thinking they'd snub both of them when I saw 4 and 5 announced. Along with Mabel, they are by far and away my favourites. Alessia's debut album is fantastic and hopefully it will get more attention this year! Jack does look like the obvious winner but they might be out of the box and give it to Frances? After all, she is on their B-list already and their support seems to be strong. They might have come to the conclusion Jack isn't going to be quite as big as they thought given the constant A-listing of his singles to little effect? We will just wait and see...

I was thinking that this morning that they might, as a surprise, give it to Frances or Dua Lipa instead. Everyone expected Tom Odell to be #1 and then Haim won in 2013!
January 7, 20169 yr Hoping Dua Lipa can win   Everyone expected Tom Odell to be #1 and then Haim won in 2013! And on another note Dua reminds me a lot of Haim so hopefully history repeats itself for Dua to win!

I don't think it is actually R1 that decides the winner? Jack Garratt is highly unlikely to be any more successful than James Blake was so it'd probably be better for the integrity of the poll if he doesn't win. Still hoping he does though.
January 7, 20169 yr I don't think it is actually R1 that decides the winner? It's not it's a group of music 'critics' at BBC but loads of them will be people who work closely with Radio 1 and 1xtra. Yes, I agree. Down with Jack.
January 7, 20169 yr You have to think of it as a bunch of critics all sitting around giving votes on, out of the T15, who is most likely to do well in 2016. Of the remaining acts, it'd be very strange if all the radio reps etc. hadn't voted for Jack - when he's looking to do very well in 2016 already. My gut did tell me that Alessia Cara and Nao would be T5. Blossoms and WSTRN have surprised me though, pleasantly, and Mura Masa is just a fantastic addition
January 7, 20169 yr actually, i'm surprised Jack Garratt hasn't done better yet... I don't think his current single is very good but the previous one Weathered was amazing and got massive r1 support but still did nothing, it went top 75 on itunes for a while... but considering the support he should at least scored a top 40...
January 8, 20169 yr Author Well, as expected then! I really hope he can cross over but if he hasn't already his prospects are quite slim. Maybe he could at least have a top 5-ish album.
January 8, 20169 yr I can't say I'm upset about Jack winning, I am actually a fan of most of the stuff he's released so far and I think he has a great vibe about him. The announcement has already sent 'Breathe Life' from around the #80 mark on iTunes up to #52 already so maybe he will go top 20 or so with it. My main concern with Jack is that he hasn't managed to top 'The Love Your Given' for me yet, which is a pure 11/10 bliss moment. I do think both 'Worry' and 'Breathe Life' are both very good too and hopefully there will be some other great songs on the album!
January 8, 20169 yr YAY for Jack :D Obviously i'm not expecting chart hits, but I hope his album can deliver the goods
January 8, 20169 yr They totally made the right decision crowning Jack Garratt as the winner of the Sound of 2016,, he has some amazing songs: My Top 5: 1.The Love You're Given   (nothing can beat this track, has the potential to smash, hopefully he pushes it as a single) 2.Weathered  (this track is stunning, word for word a beautiful composition) 3.Worry  (only heard this recently, but it sounds gorgeous and should be a future single) 4.Chemical (love this tune, it's a bit different from his others, but has a nice electric feel) 5.Breathe Life (getting to like this now, hope R1 keep it on the playlist for another few weeks)

But everything that came after that felt too safe, too much like the dull "singer songwriter" thing that we're all too used to. He really does need to push this again.
January 8, 20169 yr but the pity is...he's just not very good how many times has radio 1 a-listed him? it's only a product of him not taking off that he's made this list! last year proved how this list has no basis in reality and tbh only serves as a relic of the past. being on a list just after new year's day won't get you streamed on spotify...
January 8, 20169 yr I've heard a few of his songs now and I really don't get the fuss about him. Like others have said, he's not exactly commercial, and I doubt he'll cross over. Dua Lipa would have been a much better winner! Edited January 8, 20169 yr by Mango
