East 17s' sales are all over the place. Seen so many different sales totals for it.

I know but on the biggest selling Xmas songs which was on vh1 recently its total is only at 840k which means it has sold less than 200k in Jan 95 sales and downloads which seems low doesn't it? Also on the biggest selling songs of the 90s countdowns I've seen its total sales are at like 570k lol

I'm not sure of its sales just knew it would be around 850k overall and that sounded about right for the 1994 December sales.

 

It would have sold around 200k in the past 10 yrs of downloads id say. In comparison Mariah & The Pogues would sell 100k a yr as the biggest seasonal benificaries.

It's been downgraded as well as usual. The sales here are using the original figures.

Christmas #1 20 years ago, Earth Song was the third single released from Michael Jackson's album HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I. It received mixed reviews from critics upon release, but that didn't stop it becoming Jackson's biggest seller in the UK, where it has sold over 1.16 million copies. Must admit, when I read that statistic just now, I was surprised, I'd always assumed something like Thriller was his biggest hit! (and looking at the ever reliable Wiki, that's not even close it would seem :o)

 

7. Last Christmas/ Everything She Wants - Wham! (1984) 731,000

 

 

We now arrive at a song that is currently in the UK top 40! Last Christmas was originally released as a double a-side with Everything She Wants, and it peaked at #2 in the charts, behind Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas?, which also involved Wham! member George Michael. Last Christmas has of course gone on to become a Christmas classic, being covered by numerous artists (most recently Carly Rae Jepsen). This year to save me from tears it's the third highest Christmas song in the UK chart, behind Mariah and The Pogues.

6. That's My Goal - Shayne Ward (2005) 742,000

 

 

The final X Factor winning single to appear! Shayne Ward won the second series of the show in 2005, beating Andy Abraham to the title. Shayne's song remains the only winning single to be an original song, and not a cover. That's My Goal is the fastest selling X Factor winning single, and the third highest selling winning single in total behind Alexandra Burke and James Arthur.

 

5. Perfect Day - Various Artists (1997) 749,000

 

 

Perfect Day was originally a song released by Lou Reed, and in 1997, the BBC showcased a cover of the song in an advert for their own music coverage, broadcast over BBC channels. Lou Reed himself appears in this remake, alongside other artists such as Heather Small, David Bowie and Bono. Due to the huge public demand, the song was released as a single with profits going to Children In Need, and it spent three non-consecutive weeks at #1.

 

I didn't expected Perfect Day to outsell Last Christmas! I'd forgotten about Shane Ward altogether.

 

Perfect Day is a really wonderful version. Best charity single in my opinion.

I won't lie, I'm not even slightly clued up on MJ chart stuff :kink: that does shock me though! Always seemed like a massive #1 smash hit to me.

I think 'Thriller' has a total of over 700k so its sales are a lot more reflective of its status today than they were from the initial chart run.

Indeed just shows what an unreal album Thriller was!

Actually you're right about a lot of those.

There's the chart run - very long and stable for the early 80s, Billie Jean was the first single off the album in Jan that year and it reached no1!
