Commentary

Arty seems to give us a good tune every so often, and whilst this hasn't encouraged me to listen to his debut album this is a great tune. 'Stronger' also returned Ray Dalton to my chart, now that's someone I didn't expect to come back. He does quite a good vocal here but it's all about Arty's trancey synths. It's nice to hear a commercial house/trance crossover like this really. Good tune.

Commentary

Wants & Lorenzo gave a tune that I definitely wanted (:basil:) to listen to. It's super repetitive but super fun and it's good that a few tech house songs like this can get big radio 1 airplay and smash into the UK singles chart. The nature of the song meant that it grew off me quickly after a few months but it's definitely good enough to land a place in this year's Hot 100. The drop in the middle of the song is a real :dance: moment especially, it really does improve the song. And the sample of Daft Punk 'Technologic' really helps it too.

Commentary

So it is Tough Love get the coveted number 69 position, one that has historically gone to non-sexy people such as Sub Focus, will.i.am and Robbie Williams. So far only Cheryl has broken that trend when 'Parachute' was the #69 song of 2010. Tough Love don't become the second act to do so, but 'Dreams' is undeniably a banger. It was actually released in the Summer of 2014 but I only discovered it when searching through their back-cat after hearing 'So Freakin Tight' and to my surprise this was even better. Alas it did not make any sort of UK chart impact, but was a big tune for me. Hopefully they go back to songs like this now that they've presumably been dropped by their commercial label following the flop of 'Pony'.

Commentary

He took his time but Julio Bashmore finally removed his one-hit wonder status this Summer. And what a way to do it, even though the song sounds nothing like chart-topper 'Au Seve' it did not disappoint. It's a disco inspired track and although its influences can clearly be heard the song doesn't sound in any way dated. I love the strings and chord progressions. Nice tune for chilling out to really. Also it's the first of two songs in the chart titled 'Holding On', the joint most popular song title in the Hot 100, with 'Heaven'.

Commentary

I wasn't previously familiar with the song until it got a re-work in time for the Summer by Joe Stone, and it's a pure banger. Formulaic house at its near-best, it does a good job of what it's meant to do; providing a party anthem and general banging tune.

Commentary

Oliver Heldens just keeps putting out the tunes, and 2015 has undeniably been massive for him. Following on from the brilliant 'Melody' and the not so good 'Bunnydance' was 'Shades of Grey' which did the job of getting Shaun Frank's name out there, and you can definitely hear his input in the track. It's a great vocal track made to be a hit. So of course nothing happened with it and it only reached the lower end of the iTunes top 1500 after being held back for months. :nocheer:

I wasn't that keen on Elastic Heart at first, thought it was a massive comedown from the great Chandelier :/ the production still seems a little all over the place but Sia's vocals still do well on it :D

 

Loving all the Phillip George entries :wub: :music: I like Boss but it's my least favourite of your entries this year :kink: not really my favourite vocals and the production doesn't exite me much either but it's ok. I didn't really get the hype for Poison like I did with the other Garrix songs :( used to not like Rhymes but I eventually liked it for a while but its repetition was its downfall :kink:

 

Love The Party :music: starting to regret not sending it in BJSC now but I'm considering sending similar songs to this next year :o Freak was also a pretty good followup so I'll be watching this guy for any future songs he does :funky:

This Is How We Do It may have been a bit of an omission in hindsight for my chart. It's nothing new or innovative but it's total jam and sounds so good when it's playing loud :music:

 

Elastic Heart seems to be a bit under-represented on EOY charts so far but I hope that's just because it's going to be so high up everywhere. I agree with you that she just has such a good voice and she sounds better here than in anything because it's not too screechy. This was her best video yet too, one of my favourite pop packages of the year :wub:

Hurts was a decent offering from Kove but it was such a step back from the incredible Way We Are :heart:

 

Arty Stronger was a really weird song. I kinda liked it but the vocals got incredible annoying very quickly.

 

The Party the biggest personal highlight of your last section :dance: one of the best house tracks of the year.

the chart's taken a little break for Christmas but should resume either today or tomorrow!

What Do You Mean? :wub: :wub: The way that song (and his other 2015 singles) has converted haters to massive fans is incredible. I loved his old stuff anyway but this new sound really suits him and his progression as an artist is quite astonishing to see.

Commentary

Martin Garrix and Matisse & Sadko gave us two tracks at the same time, the wonderful 'Break Through The Silence' and the even better 'Dragon', the latter which makes the Hot 100 this year and serves as the highest entry for Garrix. It's a proper formulaic progressive house banger and whilst not being too instant, it really hits you with the drop. The extended mix is recommended for this one.

Commentary

Avicii has had the best 2015 out of anyone by far, with eight entries in the Hot 100 this year and a further two in the top 250. Here's the song it all started with in any case, and whilst most people were absolutely loving the original version, with it being his biggest UK hit of the year and yet another Gold-certified single for him, it was the Avicii By Avicii remix I fell in love with. It's brilliantly produced and I think this version allows the lyrics to shine more instead of it sounding generic. The drop is amazing too, quite dirty for Avicii but it works really well. With the original production being more catered to the radio and casual listeners, this remix appealed far more to the dance stan in me (although that's not to say the original is bad, I imagine it would have still been top 100 if the remix did not exist; although slightly lower down)

Dragon was really great, much better than Poison. I do love the Nights :wub: The AbA version is an interesting twist to it but the original is perfect :music:

All Cried Out, Afraid To Love, Elastic Heart are all great. The Nights is also very good, much better than The Days (and anything else he's done this era). What Do You Mean? is also really good, but Sorry has to be the best.

 

Rhymes is atrocious though :puke2:

Commentary

As ever the late Whitney's vocals are on point, and the song itself is really catchy - but it is here largely thanks to Oliver Nelson who did a great job of giving this classic song a remix, keeping the all original vocals but adding his nu-disco flavour to it which really works, and imo makes the song better!! Also it's in a lower pitch than the original which actually suits it more. Nelson is known for his remixes but he will be in the chart again a bit later with his first original song..

Avicii and the Whitney Remixes :heart: Two good songs there :D

Commentary

Kygo struck again proving himself why he's on top of the game in producing slow tropical house, with this really laidback tune which is basically a pop ballad. It's far from boring though. In the verses it starts with just Heard over the piano and builds up really nicely. The drop is very subtle too and I love it. I can even get past the double negative that is the subject of the title.
