January 3, 20169 yr Author I keep going to Buzzjack the the river to pray... 132.) Ella Henderson - "Ghost" Chart Points: 2944 Lead Single, Chapter One Chart Run: 50-45-45-38-28-21-18-11-12-13-14-16-19-21-23-25-20-18-17-17-20-23-27-31-32-33-36-38-42-45-46 (31 weeks (12 in 2015)) tA8AfQaUnXM You may be wondering: why in the hell is this song so low in the countdown after it spent so many weeks on the chart? Well, I never fully got "Ghost" until right around the end of my summer vacation, and by then there were talks about how Ella might push this in the US. Just about everything in this song was GOLDEN, and I fully understood the hype. Of course, it never really reached top 10 due to the massive competition there, but nevertheless, it ended up beating those songs in terms of longevity. I was pretty happy to see it break through on Billboard as well. I see big things from Ella, that is, if she can still recover from the messy campaigns from her album.
January 3, 20169 yr Author Keep on whispering in my ear, tell me all the things that I wanna hear... http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sr2AT0hcCkA/VWH03Jg2aII/AAAAAAAAaVc/LPGB6N0I5sQ/s320/5+seconds+of+summer+what+i+like+about+you+lyrics.jpg 131.) 5 Seconds of Summer - "What I Like About You" Chart Points: 2996 Lead Single, LIVESOS Chart Run: 43-30-28-25-21-19-20-25-42 (9 weeks (7 in 2015)) zJnU3bJ-QWQ The first of three 5SOS songs on the list. I don't get why they get so much hate when they're probably the up and coming Blink-182 of the 2010's. Anyway, this interesting cover of a classic 80's rock song really grabbed me at the end of last year.
January 3, 20169 yr Author Heavy metal broke my heart... 130.) Fall Out Boy - "Centuries" Chart Points: 3091 Lead Single, American Beauty / American Psycho Chart Run: 47-34-28-22-21-23-20-22-26-28-31-35-41 (13 weeks (9 in 2015)) LBr7kECsjcQ Quick anecdote: This appeared in Rock Band 3, which I got a preview of while I was a Vegas. Naturally, I went to this song and played the drums with some guy who was wasted beyond belief. Anyway... IMO one of the most powerful Fall Out Boy songs in their discography comes in at the top 130. At first I wasn't really into this track due to it being another "My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark", but it ended up becoming so much more. Instead of an epic that embraces the rebellious nature inside all of us, they try to develop the more passionate competition in us. It's pretty much a workout motivation song, which I can approve of quite quickly.
January 3, 20169 yr Author Baby, we were born with fire and gold in our eyes... 129.) Bea Miller - "Fire N Gold" Chart Points: 3146 2nd Single, Not An Apology Chart Run: 44-44-32-29-22-25-23-24-29-40 (10 weeks) kjWHpTkH7pA Back in 2012, when the US X Factor was still a thing, Britney Spears coached a young girl named Bea Miller, who has now blossomed to become another staple in upcoming teen pop-rock acts. While I got into "Young Blood" for a second, it never really caught on with me like this song did. Naturally, I ended up discovering this on Radio Disney during a BJSC potential haul (the same time I discovered "Talk"), and before it wasn't all that interesting. A couple of listens later and pretty soon her album cover became my avatar. It takes a lot of power for someone other than Cody Christian to become my avatar lately. You'll see a few other examples later.
January 4, 20169 yr Author Once upon a time, you were my everything... 128.) MNEK & Zara Larsson - "Never Forget You" Chart Points: 3157 Non-album single Chart Run: 50-42-40-36-34-27-24-20-17-22-37-47 (12 weeks) GTyN-DB_v5M This is pretty much a solid effort at the European response to "Where Are Ü Now", from the production to the epic middle 8 build-up then breakdown. While the two artists share joint lead credit, I'm still unsure whether I should put Zara first or not. Anyway, I'm pretty sure most people got pretty excited when this began to smash in the UK. While I'm still looking for a proper breakthrough to the US for Zara, rest assured that she will definitely have some type of impact in the UK. As for MNEK, he's just an amazing artist in general.
January 4, 20169 yr Author We need to fetch back the time they have stolen from us... 127.) Milky Chance - "Stolen Dance" Chart Points: 3189 Lead single, Sadnecessary Chart Run: 49-44-37-27-15-15-13-7-7-4-4-7-7-11-12-13-14-17-23-29-37-45 (22 weeks (7 in 2015)) iX-QaNzd-0Y Some more 2014 surprise chart hits for me - unlike 2015, the year prior was a year of surprise chart hits as songs that I never thought I would like raced to the top of my countdown in a flash. "Stolen Dance" was among the trifecta of previous Australian hits that became huge in the chart, and this was mainly due to it finally getting US airplay... that wasn't alternative. I will admit that the first time I listened to this song, I wasn't really feeling it - it just seemed a little too slow for my liking. Then I got into the tropical house/future house bandwagon that everyone seemed to be in and I ended up taking a liking to such a track. I'm not at all surprised that they haven't made anything that surpasses or even matches the quality of this masterpiece.
January 4, 20169 yr Author Paint my heart red, it's the color of love... 126.) Brielle - "Catch A Star For You" Chart Points: 3239 Non-album single Chart Run: 48-39-25-21-23-22-22-20-31-37 (10 weeks) d6jWFw7u7pI The second BJSC entry in the countdown is three things: 1.) Number 126 on the countdown 2.) A giant Hushkanukian fave, and 3.) position-wise my floppiest entry and the point when I became a giant Buzzjack meme. #ProbablyShouldHaveSentFightSong. Anyway, it was a nice track to open up, and although the track's performance made me a bit disillusioned about how I could redeem myself, it ended up being a staple for what's to come. Let's talk about the artist now - I heard about Brielle from my gym's playlist (it kept spamming "Avalanche" - Cameron, you know what to do), so when gathering ideas for my first entry, I looked into that. Then I found this song and it completely changed everything. I may end up going to this side of pop in the future, but right now I'll stick to sending tracks that are a bit more serious.
January 4, 20169 yr Author We can all get some, yeah, we can all get paid... 125.) 5 Seconds of Summer - "Hey Everybody!" Chart Points: 3294 2nd single, Sounds Good Feels Good Chart Run: 35-27-25-27-23-19-18... (7 weeks) xPGbvv4IhNU I find 5SOS to be extremely underrated. At least during this era. During a grocery trawl, I came across a copy of Alternative Press magazine, and among the albums being reviewed was a 5SOS album. That got me thinking, "It's pretty sad that they co-exist with boy bands because they end up getting the same treatment." It's Blink-182 and Backstreet Boys all over again - they can coexist whilst product img different subgenres of pop, and besides, this isn't straying too far from the likes of, say, "What's My Age Again?". Now that I got that off my chest: this song is pop punk at its finest - and I say that having grown up during the main punk eras. It's a feel-good track with the premise that things will turn around for people who work hard. And what better way to tie it all up than with another crazy video. Luke should wear ties more often.
January 4, 20169 yr Author Hanging with some girls I've never seen before... 124.) Drake - "Hotline Bling" (remix with Kehlani & Charlie Puth) Chart Points: 3371 2nd single, Views From The 6 Chart Run: 48-43-39-33-29-23-21-24-21-25-33... (11 weeks) uxpDa-c-4Mc hbKX_m6GRxE This remix is pretty exclusive, as I've only heard it on the radio, but both the original and remix versions are pretty spectacular on their own. This remix mashes up the original version with the cover version made by Kehlani and Charlie Puth, the latter still having three more entries in this countdown. The video is both simplistic and yet iconic, with Drake performing many dance moves that a lot of people want to replicate. Pretty sure I also saw the Wheelchair Jimmy there - those Degrassi references won't stop. This song is arguably his biggest hit in the US.
January 4, 20169 yr Author Hey, where'd you get that body from? 123.) PSY f/CL of 2NE1 - "Daddy" Chart Points: 3374 Lead single, 칠집싸이다 Chart Run: 19-15-14-13... (4+ weeks) FrG4TEcSuRg I was honestly excited about another PSY song after reminiscing on how good "Gangnam Style" and "Gentleman" were. Then this came out and it's pretty much the same style as the first two singles. For this one, he teams up with CL of 2NE1, and she does spectacular despite having only one line repeated. This song is an interpolation of will.i.am's "I Got It From My Mama" (which I also really liked), and the will.i.am-like production really helps its case.
January 4, 20169 yr Author Let's lose our minds and go f*cking crazy... 122.) DNCE - "Cake By The Ocean" Chart Points: 3487 Lead single, SWAAY - EP Chart Run: 45-34-32-30-29-24-18-16... (8+ weeks) vWaRiD5ym74 This next song is, as the song says, "F*cking delicious". Joe Jonas' new project DNCE is another future hit that comes a bit lower in this countdown, despite finally making top 10 during this week's chart. Joe has done a lot concerning his music career past the Jo Bros, but nothing has ever reached the level of success this song has at this point. In a way, they're like Cobra Starship part 2: going a pop route that doesn't seem traditional but fits within the mainframe in the same way, and making a profit out of it. I finally got to streaming the entire EP and it was pretty nice.
January 5, 20169 yr Author Another runner help us step the moves up... 121.) Flo Rida f/Robin Thicke & Verdine White - "I Don't Like It, I Love It" Chart Points: 3716 2nd single, My House Chart Run: 49-37-31-27-25-23-24-21-20-25-42... (11 weeks) Tw8mpgccugc We see Flo Rida's first entry crash out here at #121 with "I Don't Like It, I Love It", featuring Robin Thicke and guitarist Verdine White from Earth, Wind & Fire. Now, for me it seemed like Flo actually rescued Robin's career, but it didn't do as well in the US than it did in the Eastern Hemisphere. It's nice to see another disco forefront act transcend into the modern age similar to Nile Rodgers' contribution to "Get Lucky". In a sense, it's more of a neo-disco sound manufactured to fit in with today's major playlists. I still don't get the hate for Flo Rida at all, but I can just have the fun all to myself.
January 5, 20169 yr Author I should be more cynical and tell myself it’s not okay... 120.) Tori Kelly - "Nobody Love" Chart Points: 3781 Lead single, Unbreakable Smile Chart Run: 49-36-36-25-25-18-18-20-25-42 (10 weeks) MPX3qz1ve7M There was something about Professor Green's "Lullaby" that really tied me into it when I first listened to it, and I ended up tracing my infatuation to Tori Kelly's voice. This girl has PIPES. When I saw that a single by her was about to be released, however, I was a bit wary because normally, artists who get popular from features are a bit of a mixed bag. Luckily, she was a lot fresher in the US, so she ended up doing fair despite a flop position. I really loved this over the beginning of spring, which my chart run for it attests to.
January 5, 20169 yr Author Let this go on forever, I don't wanna get off this ride... 119.) Dr. Kucho! & Gregor Salto f/Ane Brun - "Can't Stop Playing (Makes Me High)" [Oliver Heldens Remix] Chart Points: 3825 Non-album single Chart Run: 43-38-33-28-26-17-18-20-20-33-50 (11 weeks) KSrOYPQiyFA There's usually that time where my chart experiences very surprising debuts - for 2015, it was the February-May period where a lot of UK hits entered the chart. "Can't Stop Playing (Makes Me High)" is no exception - it was another surprising entry from Oliver Heldens (remixing the song), who previously graced the charts with his first two singles. The vocal version of this song ended up smashing in the UK and of course won my heart. Fun fact: This is one of the songs that was featured in two of three of my chart countdowns.
January 5, 20169 yr Author In the night she's dancing to relieve the pain... 118.) The Weeknd - "In The Night" Chart Points: 4201 4th single, Beauty Behind The Madness Chart Run: 43-36-34-17-10-4... (6+ weeks) 2iFa5We6zqw I never really followed The Weeknd's singles so closely until now, and even this song came to me by surprise. After the groovy "Can't Feel My Face" and sexpot anthem "The Hills", he switched it up again to an ode to the lady of the night - if you catch my drift. In this one, he tells a story of a girl who is very extroverted and abrasive on the outside, but only uses that as a façade to hide the pain and conflict that she feels on the inside, whatever it may be, and I think that's what we all face in the world. We all face some type of internal conflict in our lives and sometimes other people might not understand, but we smile through the pain anyway. All this analysis really makes me appreciate the song more.
