Tobtok - Aber

MOS: Released on Friday 8th July, "Aber" is brand new from Swedish rising star, Tobtok.

He's supported Allesso, Avicii, Oliver Heldens and Martin Garrix, and is about to take on the States before heading back to Ibiza, but time hasn't always been on Tobtok's side.

"Aber is about the struggles in life and the way we overcome them and grow from them" he explains. After overcoming a battle with cancer, he releases 'Aber' which translates from Swedish to "an unexpected obstacle" as a dedication to life.

First run of DNQs in 2 years

With the country still divided in civil war it seems South Danaelanda don't stand well on their own in the contest as 'Aber' by Tobtok gives Danaelanda its worst ever performance.

Previously our worst was BJSC 62's Mar 'Man x Woman' which finished in 26th but 'Aber' outdoes that by four positions finishing in a lowly 30th in a hotly contested semi final made of 34 songs. It also marks the first time we have DNQed twice in a row since our flops in BJSC 66 and 67. If we DNQ again next contest then it will be our longest run since BJSC 46 to 49 where we DNQed four times in a row.

South Danaelanda are coming to terms now with the fact that our country has peaked in success and relevance and will continue to partake in the contest despite our floppage. Our next entry will be our 50th and so a very special artist will be performing for us.

'Aber' only received 29 points, 12 of which came from Ethanola who we also gave 12 points to and they failed to qualify.

President Tim Bergling's comment on the matter is 'wake me up when it's all over'.

Didn't think you'd be a fan of Avicii Cam :P (let's not pretend I'm sending anyone else)

Not sure what I should send from him though, there's this one I want to send but the featured artist currently has a big hit in the charts so it could come across as really cheap?

50th Anniversary Celebrations

We will be starting our 50th anniversary celebrations soon, but firstly we would like YOU to help us decide what best represents South Danaelanda as half a country in our fiftieth contest. Here are your options.

Disclaimer: the winner of the public opinion poll will NOT necessarily be what we send.

Avicii - Heaven [feat. Simon Aldred]

An unreleased tune from Avicii, featuring Simon Aldred who was also on massive hit 'Waiting For Love'. Chris Martin of Coldplay was rumoured to be on this but it was later confirmed to not be him.

Avicii - Dear Boy [feat. Karen Marie Ørsted]

An 8-minute album track, condensed into a radio friendly format in the video above, which was cruelly not chosen as a single to be taken from the album 'True'. Featuring vocals from Karen Marie Ørsted (aka MØ) and NOT Lana Del Rey as was rumoured.

Avicii - City Lights [feat. Noonie Bao]

This one is taken from the album 'Stories' and is one of the more club-friendly tracks on the album, featuring the vocals of Noonie Bao who helped take 'I Could Be The One' to #1 in the UK.

Avicii - On My Own [feat. Joakim Berg]

A leaked unreleased song from Avicii, based on his own remix of True album track 'Liar Liar' - featuring vocals from Joakim Berg who is unrelated to Avicii despite sharing his surname.

Vote for your favourite using the Google Form and comment in this thread too if you wish.

All of those are very good - but Dear Boy is by far and away the best out of them all - my second favourite track from True after Liar Liar (on a different note I was convinced John Newman was on the Liar Liar chorus vocals until like a month ago?! Tell me I'm not mad).

You'll probably get some (insert word related to p**n*s here because I don't want to break the rules again :heehee:) from me regardless so it's obviously up to you but damn, Dear Boy is such a jam.

50 Contests: A Review
after 50 contests, Danaelanda looks back on its participation

BJSC 35 [June 2011], hosted by Herzebania, People's Republic of Jester and Utopia

R-3075408-1314546027.jpeg.jpg

Where else to start then but BJSC 35, the first contest Danaelanda participated in. It was a summer's day in 2011 when we checked the Buzzjack Song Contest forum and noticed that registration had finally been re-opened (I recall it was closed for some time as they didn't want a load of new people in, and this was back when we'd have less than 50 in a contest - how times have changed.

Our original source of entries would have been Radio 1's dance anthems, perhaps this could be seen as cheap but there were and still are plenty of songs that are played on the show that are obscure enough to go in the contest - and some that were quite well known but still got into the contest anyway (cough, Animals and Tsunami). We had an entry planned for the contest, the wonderful 'Catch Your Fall' by Clokx (
) but unfortunately for us we discovered that the song had already been sent, and it got wasted on a Buzzjackfestivalen contest where it flopped too. -_-

So it was instead the turn of Danny Dove, Ben Preston and Susie Ledge to represent Danaelanda in their first contest with the song 'Falling', also from Radio 1's Friday night dance anthems show. The song itself isn't all that great, and would go on to become one of our least-regarded entries by ourselves very shortly. Some countries do get it right on their first go but the majority don't, and Danaelanda were no exception. 'Falling' would even only make #42 in the country's official chart (my personal chart) - to date a record low for a main contest entry of ours (some spin-offs have missed the top 50 entirely).

That didn't stop it from qualifying though, in fact it would finish 5th in the semi giving us a good first impression - but it was a case of us just being in the right semi as we would end up finishing 25th in the final - back when the final only had 28 songs in it (giving a more authentic Eurovision-type experience than BJSC today, but that's not necessarily a good thing especially with the number of entries we have now).

So what did do well then? FSR Rontvia were on top of their game back in 2011, with Chart Music 'All My Life' giving them yet another win. A personal favourite of ours in the contest, Havana Brown's 'We Run The Night' finished in 2nd, represented by Unoshake (RIP). It was the lucky recipient of the first Danaelanda +12 and remains our personal favourite of the contest today (unlike a few other top-pointers).

Let us also not forget Aquafina (RIP) who went a bit on the cheap side, sending Alexandra Stan of recent hit 'Mr Saxobeat' fame with her follow-up 'Get Back (ASAP)'. We also enjoyed that a fair bit and gave it 10 points, and it finished in the top 10 (the country's first of numerous top 10s). Also noteworthy in the top 10 was Wynter Gordon finishing 6th for Hendinia and Capital Cities finishing 7th for Letland (now Vülkyria) with 'Safe and Sound', which would go on to become a worldwide hit single many months after the contest. The contest also marked the first top 10 hit for Altyr Muunilinst (then known as FYR Vojvodina-on-the-Wold, I'm glad they changed that) who finished in 8th having sent Florrie (wouldn't be the last time they sent her too).

Here is how we voted;

12 - UnoShake: Havana Brown 'We Run The Night' (2nd)
10 - Aquafina: Alexandra Stan 'Get Back (ASAP)' (9th)
08 - B.a.N.G: Sharam feat. Anousheh Khalili 'Fun' (23rd)
07 - Torchwood: Mike Nielsen feat. Ellen 'Unnamed Love' (16th)
06 - FYR Vojvodina-on-the-Wold: Wynter Gordon 'Buy My Love' (8th)
05 - Lievant: Ultraviolet Sound 'Dead On The Dancefloor' (13th)
04 - FSR Rontvia: Chart Music 'All My Life' (1st)
03 - Ashton: Kristine Elezaj 'Warpath' (5th)
02 - Letland: Capital Cities 'Safe And Sound' (7th)
01 - People's Republic of Jester: Akcent feat. Ruxandra Bar 'Feelings On Fire' (17th)

BJSC 36 [July 2011], hosted by FSR Rontvia

elena_disco_romancing_video_picture_1_130565666.jpg

So after a bit of an underperformance in BJSC 35, we'd find a new niche for the country: Romanian dancepop not too dissimilar from the likes of Alexandra Stan. We would send Elena and her effort 'Disco Romancing' into this contest with the hopes of providing our country with a better finish. In reality though, the song failed to make the final. We were gutted. How could people not like a fun Eurodance smash?

Well as it turned out a fair few people did, as Elena would come back in The Rejects final and smash the competition... well most of it anyway. It finished 2nd, which convinced us to return to the BuzzJack Song Contest the following contest and we have never left since. Indeed we took a break of four contests after this, as I was very much losing interest in the contest since DNQing with a song we thought was a lot better than our previous entry. Looking back it's not a major favourite of mine but I do quite enjoy it. It is a bit of its time though, I do remember when songs like these seemed to be a big dance trend but now you don't get any of them

So what did well then? The contest was won by little known artist Lana Del Rey who represented Isconia with 'Video Games'. I wasn't a fan at the time but a few months later when it became a UK hit single I was won over by it. The contest in particular doesn't have any highlights other than that to speak of, I don't even remember most of these songs - not even Sisse Marie's 'Dirty Hands' which we gave 12 points to.

Here were our votes;

12 Kopečka: Sisse Marie - Dirty Hands (11th)
10 B.a.N.G: Ciara ft. Usher - Turn It Up (12th)
08 FSR Rontvia: Ria – Over You (9th)
07 Unovia: Oh My! - Kicking and Screaming (8th)
06 Kluminican Republic: Azuro feat. Elly - Ti Amo (5th)
05 Batidas: Andain – Promises (4th)
04 Farahtyn: Supermarkets feat Danny Saucedo - Crash and Survive (28th)
03 Numayania - The Young Professionals – D.I.S.C.O. (24th)
02 People's Republic of Jester (ProJ): Lora - No More Tears (20th)
01 Budtar: Zoë Badwi - Accidents Happen (17th)

BJSC 41 [January 2012], hosted by Greenfroze

Radio_Killer_0d9ff66fbc.jpg

So we were back after a little break and what better to send than a dance banger with female vocals right? Well clearly this didn't leave much of an impression as it would unfortunately DNQ, missing out by just one position and four points. That would be frustrating for any country in this contest and it was a big disappointment for us to return with a DNQ. The song, 'Don't Let The Music End' by Radio Killer, would end up doing semi-well in the year's rejects final to make up for it. It was a bit of a generic dance entry, as Danaelanda would become known for sending, but it is a bit of a fun song with a decent vocal.

So what did well then? Our 12 points went to FSR Rontvia, a firm favourite country of ours at the time having sent dance tune 'Flares'. The entry finished 3rd behind Tone Damli representing Ashton and Foxes representing Fljotavik with the winning song 'Youth', which we did not point at the time but we did like it a fair bit once it became a UK hit single over a year later. Carly Rae Jepsen also did well in the contest with 'Call Me Maybe' finishing 6th, which would of course become a huge hit a few months later.

Here were our votes;

+12 FSR Rontvia - Prance Faris - Flares (3rd)
+10 Scherzland - Vox Halo feat. LaDolla - Criminal (20th)
+8 Lievant - Mollyhaus feat. Little Neve White & The Snoopy Lads - Liar liar! (15th)
+7 Kluminican Republic - Paulina Rubio - Heat of the night (12th)
+6 Ramrynia - Carly Rae Jepsen - Call me maybe (6th)
+5 Mdiče- MNDR - #1 in heaven (8th)
+4 ChrIseland - Donkeyboy - City boy (17th)
+3 Syndare - SoSo - Who's gonna love me (9th)
+2 Tinnmark - Andremo feat. Coco - Music is turning me on (25th)
+1 N-Lazone - Ian Carey & Rosette feat. Timbaland & Brasco - Amnesia (14th)

50 Contests: A Review
after 50 contests, Danaelanda looks back on its participation

BJSC 42 [February 2012], hosted by Fljótavík

4964470.jpg

No lie, this could have been the contest where we finally won. We had discovered Emma Hewitt 'Colours' on the Armada Music channel prior to the contest and had intended to send it... until Hitstastic posted saying he was going to send it but had been beaten to it, before we had even confirmed (so obviously I didn't attempt to confirm it and send Antillas instead - more on that later). Eventually we'd find out that Botanikka got to it first and they would go on to win the contest. There were no hard feelings though, we'd give it 12 points.

Antillas would represent us instead then with 'Damaged' featuring Fiora (who would appear on many trance songs at the time). It would be our first trance entry but unfortunately the change in direction wouldn't work for us - we would DNQ yet again, finishing 18th in the semi-final (which was bottom 5, semis were smaller back then). A fun fact: 'Damaged' is a cover of a former UK top 20 hit from Plummet, so some of you may be familiar with it already. We didn't actually know this when we sent it so that had no impact on our decision, I just think it's a great song. A small controversy would appear with this song many contests later when someone tried to confirm the Plummet version but got vetoed because it's basically the same song as this.

So what did well then? As mentioned earlier Emma Hewitt would win with 'Colours', two points ahead of Elen Levon representing Ashton with 'Like A Girl In Love'. Poor Elen Levon would go on to have yet another song finish in the runner-up position but she has yet to win a contest. Emma Hewitt however went on to win another contest, namely the most recent edition of Buzzjackfestivalen (in 2015, as it did not run this year).
