This will be the worst set of #1 singles to begin a year that I can recall in a very long time. :/

They may as well all be the same song.

By contrast I think it's one of the best. Last year I enjoyed everything up to and including "Want To Want Me", but individually I'm more behind the songs/artists that have kicked this year off, nice to see my faves getting this success. :D

To my ears I agree, but this is probably the peak of the singer-songwriter saturation we've seen recently. Reminds me of the deep house phase of 2014 in many ways. The easiest way for record labels to get a hit right now are these sort of songs.

3beat (label of Sigma, Fuse ODG & Stylo G) have abandoned their held-back release strategy and with their songs underperforming, surely only a matter of time before MoS do so too. This DJ Fresh song sounded a guaranteed top 20, but has been held back too long.

call them whatever you want but Bieber or Zayn are no singer-songwriters, do you think they have something in common with people like Bob Dylan, Damien Rice, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Tracy Chapman, Leonard Cohen etc??? come on!!!! They're silly pop singers, that's like an insult to real singer-songwriters!!!!!

and Shawn Mendes... he did not write or had anything to do with Stitches, he's no singer-sognwriter he's just a pure bubblegum pop singer, same as Britney or Kylie, and I'd out Zayn and Bieber in the same category, just cos they're added as co-writers in a song with 10 co-writers cos they changed a comma, that doesn't make them Joan Baez :)

You can be a singer-songwriter without being comparable to those people.

If you take part in writing songs then you're a singer-songwriter. You don't need to be dead to be able to write songs, you'd do well to realise that.

You have no idea what the writing process for anyone who's listed as a writer on their songs is like, so it's bizarre that you are so sure that people like Justin do the bare minimum for their writing credits. But I guess the people who are most confident in their assumptions tend to be the most ignorant people.

I find it pretty funny that some people say 7 Years is hideous and then hail Jonas Blue's pointless cover of an 80s hit as a great song. :P

I hate both, what do I win?

Besides, Shawn may not have written Stitches but he co-wrote most of his album so that makes him a singer/songwriter too :P

Love this comment. Exactly how i feel. I know music is subjective but if you compare an original piece of popular music with a lazy cover version then you're asking for ridicule

Technically yes but regarding the genre of the singer-songwriter then you can't really.

Also, can we ditch the assumption that to be a great artist you have to write your own songs? Writing songs it a totally different talent to singing songs.

It's more than that. Your primary instrument of choice has to be acoustic. The major themes in your lyrics are confessional with elements of storytelling.

Yes you can, it's a very broad genre. Widely disliked Jessie J is a singer-songwriter for example. Just because someone writes pop, or music you don't particularly like, it doesn't;t mean they can't fit that category.

Yes but some do both and if they do both very well then are they not a greater artist than someone who just performs other people's songs very well?

Yes it does mean they can't fit that category because that not how a singer/songwriter is defined.

I'm not sure what the part I have bolded has got to do with the argument.

They perhaps have a wider range of talent in music and I have every praise for them, but I don't think it necessarily means they're better artists. Obviously the question of who is better is totally subjective, but I don't think it's a good attitude for any fan of music to say something like pop is crap and an insult to 'real' artists, just to use what Bjork said.

I totally agree. For example - Girls Aloud are infinitely better than Snow Patrol. B-)
