The Social Democrats are smashing some constituencies. They're so close to securing Dublin Central as well. Transfers might push Gannon down to fourth but I hope he stays in third. Count ten for DC is due any moment now so we'll see how much he gains through transfers.

EDIT: Oh CHRIST! He's now only eight votes ahead with one count left. O'Sullivan has this. :(

Not knowing anything about the Independent who has just been eliminated, I'll have to take your word for this!

Meanwhile, in Kerry, they still haven't declared the first round yet. There seems to be a suspicion that some of the votes for the Healy-Rae brothers may have got mixed up.

I also noticed that, in one constituency, one of the candidates - after transfers - had the exact number of votes required to reach the threshold. At least that saves having to redistribute that candidate's votes.

This is something I've never actually understood - how do they go about deciding which votes are used in the surplus reallocation? Or do they count all of the next preferences and then divide it by the number of the surplus?

The latter. That means it can take a long time to count thousands of votes, but only redistribute a few dozen because the candidate only just got past the threshold.

It also means that technically you can end up with fractions of votes, which never seems to get officially reported as it would cause mass confusion among people who'd wonder why some people only get 0.8 of a vote.

O'Sullivan just secured DC with 300 extra transfers. :(

The Social Democrats needed that seat to secure speaking rights in parliament. Heartbroken!!!

EDIT: Oh nevermind! It's 7 seats for speaking rights. No idea why I thought it was 4!

And can we all just pretend Kerry doesn't exist. Literally the worst electorate ever.

This is why all this time I'd thought it hadn't actually been calculated that way.

It would be interesting to see a recount using the "random election" method, just to see how much difference it would have made :P . Of course, that would mean that a lot of voters would not have seen the whole of their vote counted, thereby nullifying the "Single" part of the Single Transferable Vote.

It is confusing to be fair and takes a long time to work out but there top 2 tend to get through then alter other 1/2/3 battle it out.

The Social Democrats leaders have all got elected and done well but after that not so great. PBP are the small grouping outside the big 3/4 parties who are fighting for speaking rights in the Dail. Good to see as well. I get the feeling the SDs will just merge with Labour again when they ultimately recover in a few years.

The counting process is complicated, but the voting process is straightforward enough. The reason I have always supported it is because of the amount of power it gives to the voter.

Oh yeh I totally agree with it and it is much more democratic than FPTP.

Seems the Irish voters have asked for a new government after losses for FG & Labour and yet they have passed the mantle to FF which is ridiculous because they are literally the same party coming from different backgrounds, I'd say SF should stay well away and focus on keeping Labours vote down when they've been out of government for a period and trying to come to some type of unlikely agreement with the other left wing independent especially PBP who could well break the 7 TDs required to have speaking rights in he Dail.

I used my full allowance by ranking all 10 candidates on Friday morning, different than just one x then you are done.

I would use my tallies to vote for my political views depending on the constituency - so it would be SF, People Before Profit and another left winger or Green candidate/or in the rural west independents and SF.

If only we used a system in the UK that allowed us to do the same :(

Only problem in Ireland is that when people get bored of one Centre right party it's easy to change to another centre right party in Fianna Fáil - it's ridiculous if it wasn't true.

With a FPTP system in the south it would actually be easier to change the direction of the government ideologically and the hypocrisy of certain parties would be clearer.

Seat allocation so far

Fianna Fáil 36

Fine Gael 37

Sinn Fein 17

Labour 6

People Before Profit 5

Is there any prospect of any if the Independents being persuaded to join a government, or are they all pledged to maintain their independence by being in opposition?
