Star Wars is quite a tough film to categorise (and it always has been!), I would say it's more towards Sci-Fi than action, but it makes sense as it fits both! Wish Ex Machina could have won that, but it was a great category.

Mainly very agreeable winners so far, yay for Baymax & Ava in particular <3 (I preferred Sadness as a character to Joy, maybe that says something about my state of mind?)

Best Drama

The winner is ROOM with six votes

http://lylesmoviefiles.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/room-movie-2015-jacob-temblay-brie-larson.jpg

(2nd Brooklyn / 3rd Spotlight / 4th Joy / 5th Carol)

You nailed that top 3 Buzzjack! The tense and gripping Room takes the prize here with two stand-out lead performances from Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay (how nice is it to have a kid in a movie who's not annoying). My favourite movie of last year, the marvelous Brooklyn, is runner up whilst factual exposé drama Spotlight is third. Sadly Carol got no first preference votes here, not because it was no good or Buzzjack is homophobic I'm sure :P Just faced some tough competition (although I think it deserved to beat Joy (that was in the comedy category at the Globes you know!! :heehee:))

Those were probably the most bang on nominees of the whole awards.

Think my rank would be:

Room

Carol

Joy

Brooklyn

Spotlight

But all are really fantastic, gutted Carol came last actually but a great winner and Spotlight did better than I expected!

BEST HORROR

01. It Follows (5 votes)

02. Krampus (3 votes)

03. The Gift (2 votes) [2 second preferences]

04. The Boy Next Door (2 votes) [1 second preference]

05. Unfriended (0 votes)

Ultraviolence isn't with us yet so I'm hosting this award but she's the only one of us three to even see one of these  I've not seen any of these because horrors scare me and I don't like that so I don't watch them

It Follows wins here, no surprise there because it was the only horror to make it into the Best Picture nominees. Apparently it focuses more on suspense than just silly gore which made it a critic favourite and it gained quite a following. Maika Monroe is the lead in it and got a lot of good reviews for her performance. She seems to be building up more of a filmography too, she'll be appearing in the new Independence day later in the year.

Krampus is a comedy/horror set at Christmas time and was apparently quite unusual so I guess that's why it was so popular here. I actualy quite liked the trailer for this but then a giant clown jumped out and I firmly decided I'd be avoiding this at all costs.

The Gift managed to make it into two of genre categories here tonight but didn't win at either of them. This was actor Joel Edgerton's first feature film directing debut and was met with great reviews. I've heard it's very creepy and uneasy to watch.

My Dad watched The Boy Next Door and tells me 'it was alright'. I like J-Lo a lot and like seeing her act but she actually got nominated for a Razzie in this role so something tells me she's probably not very good in it. It has the lowest IMDb rating of all of these nominees (just 4.6/10!)

Unfriended also has quite a low IMDb rating but I guess good horrors seem to be hard to come by nowadays. It's about a supernatural being controlling the account of a dead person though and that sounds pretty damn scary to me though.

Best Picture Nominee #6:

ROOM

When the film starts off we see a mother called Joy or Ma (Portrayed by Brie Larson) and her 5-year-old son (played by Jacob Tremblay) doing regular stuff i.e. Watching television or celebrating his birthday. As we get more into the film we realise that they are

held in what seems and feels like a small 4x4 as prison/hostage as they mother was kidnapped seven years ago. She gave birth to Jack due to being raped by her kidnapper ‘Old Nick’

. Her son Jack doesn’t know anything about the outside world all he has been told is

‘anything on television isn’t real but anything in this room is real’

. Away from what the plot, let’s talk about the movie itself. The acting is amazing, from Brie of course is amazing in her own right but its Jacob who for me steals the show from her. He really acts like a boy who doesn't know what the real world is and only knows of what’s in ‘Room’. Their relationship is tragic yet so connected, if this was real you couldn't tell what they had went through because of how special the bond is. My favourite scene is leading up to the

escape scene

where she finally tells Jack about the real world and gets his brain thinking more ‘Oh maybe there is more out there’. The script is brilliant, the direction is again brill. Also taken from me Film Degree currently good cinematography and misè en scene too really brings the film together into a cohesive piece’. If You Havent seen this film I cannot recommend it enough, Well worth a watch, such a interesting plot.

Room is just one of those perfect movies that handles every thing so well and it really hits hard. It pretty much had the whole cinema sobbing from start to finish with so many emotional scenes. The acting was excellent from both leads, Brie Larson managed to emphasise her pain with almost all of her dialogue, in the interview scene I felt like I was watching a real documentary and the whole film would never have even worked without the talent of Jacob Tremblay. Even Joan Allen and William H. Macy put in great supporting performances and you could really feel their pain of losing a daughter for seven years too. I think the fact the screenplay was adapted by Emma Donoghue who also wrote the book helped the film out massively because it managed to maintain all the parts that made the book so special too, I'm hoping it might even win the Oscar in that category although probably quite unlikely. It's difficult to sum up how good this is out without revealing spoilers but anyone who hasn't seen it really should, I guarantee you'll tear up at least once and it's worth it for the tension and character relationships in so many scenes too. The last scene of the movie where you get a real sense of how small Room was all along is one of the most perfect endings too.

Skipping over Best Animation to try and leave that for UV and instead going for..

Best Voice Performance

The winner is PHYLLIS SMITH "Inside Out" with six votes

http://orig13.deviantart.net/cb63/f/2015/037/8/c/inside_out_07_bestmoviewalls_by_bestmoviewalls-d8gvu72.jpg

(2nd Amy Poehler "Inside Out" / 3rd Scott Adsit "Big Hero 6" / 4th Sharlto Copley "Chappie" / 5th Lupita N’Yongo "Star Wars: The Force Awakens")

Who's voting for anything related to Chappie? Anyway, the voice of Sadness wins with two votes more than the voice of Joy. All of the Inside Out characters are voiced so well (I joked about Mindy Kaling in The Night Before earlier but she really should've been up for this </3), my preference would've been Joy just because she's more joyous / upbeat but Phyllis Smith does a great job and I imagine she had to do more work (isn't Amy joyful all the time already )

Pretty much the opposite of what I'd have gone for, I loved the wackiness of Maz in Star Wars and also Chappie was so adorable.

MOST ATTRACTIVE ACTOR

01. Zac Efron (5 votes)

02. Chris Evans (3 votes) [2 second preferences]

02. Tom Hardy (3 votes) [2 second preferences]

04. Liam Hemsworth (2 votes)

05. Oscar Isaac (1 vote)

06. Henry Cavill (0 votes)

So heart-throb Zac Efron wins here, he was the big celeb crush of many teenagers back in the High School Musical days but he's matured into a very handsome young man nowadays. For those of you who were lucky enough to see Dirty Grandpa and therefore Zac's bottom then I'm sure you'll understand his win here.

Chris Evans and Tom Hardy come joint second here. Chris has always been cute in older movies like Not Another Teen Movie and Fantastic Four but the added stubble he sports now makes him one of the biggest celebrity crushes to many people. Tom Hardy always looks very dapper and I like his lips.

Liam Hemsworth would be my top pick here, not many people saw The Dressmaker but it was a good little movie made a little bit better by topless Liam in one scene. He's a lot more attractive than his brother in my opinion but he always seems to get the attention!

Oscar Isaac fluttered into the crush lists of many people this December when he played the incredibly likeable Poe Dameron in the latest Star Wars movie. I suppose he become a little more famous due to Ex_Machina too but not sure about that beard :P

Henry Cavill sadly gets no votes which is a shame, he's quite high for me and I just recently took off my desktop wallpaper for Chris Pine. He's also really nice in all his interviews which I think adds to his appeal.

Let's have another Best Picture contender (and come back to Brooklyn later as UV needs to write her piece about it as well as needing to do my own :kink:)

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Essay by Chez

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away, a space opera film was made that went on to make a permanent footmark in popular culture and movie history and forty one years and five follow ups later, the revival of this franchise was still all that was being talked about in the world of film last Christmas. We ALL know about Star Wars so I'll skip the context bit. The Force Awakens was the first of a planned new trilogy for the franchise following being purchased by Disney and the official seventh episode of the space saga, despite being released at the tail end of the year a week before Christmas, it was comfortably the fastest selling film of 2015 (clinching that title from Jurassic World which achieved the feat earlier in the year), and currently sits in third place in the best selling films of all time list, behind Avatar and Titanic. Critics and fans alike also praised the film as being a true return to form following George Lucas' fairly disappointing prequel trilogy and exactly what was needed to relaunch the saga.

And is it worth it? Well, I'm a long time fan of Star Wars so had fairly big and at the same time worried expectations of what to expect here, but I was very pleased and it's definitely the best we've seen of Star Wars since The Empire Strikes Back. I'll avoid spoilers here for those few of you who haven't seen it yet (and sort it out if not, though I can't believe you would've actually avoided spoilers at this point), but the film tells the story of a two unlikely heroes in a tyranny formed from the Empire's ashes - a scavenger, Rey and an escaped, reformed storm trooper, Finn as after receiving a cryptic message, take a stand to join the still standing rebel alliance to fight the forces of evil, led by Kylo Ren, someone seemingly closer to home than Rey might think. Sound familiar? Well yeah, a lot of this film is based around A New Hope, there are plot points and characters where you can see the parallel instantly even, however it doesn't feel like a rip off and more a homage, indeed there's a sense of a knowing wink of this that is prevalent in the film and it is not trying to be anything other than a homage, and that's where it's main strength lies really - for long time fans like me, the joy is it *feels* like a Star Wars film because of this, it isn't a stupidly complex film with poor acting, no sense of dread, interesting characters that are killed off early, stalling plot and overly political jargon taking the place of a coherent plot as CGI was more the focus (I wonder what film I'm talking about here? thinking.gif), it is what Star Wars was primarily known for - likeable well developed characters, a vast array of worlds, a simple plot, classic freedom vs tyranny storyline and a hell of a lot of fun space action, lightsaber duels as well as some emotional moments, something that even new fans to Star Wars will appreciate as it's all the elements of a great sci-fi action film. It's just...exactly what I hoped for, the characters as mentioned are the strong points with an excellent mix of old and new. Han, Luke, Chewie, Leia and C-3PO have lost none of their charm and Rey, Finn and the adorable BB8 are really likeable and well portrayed heroes who we'll have no problem rooting for, and Kylo Ren as a villain is another complex and interesting replacement for Vader and one that will definitely be interesting to see develop.

Essentially, the perfect way to launch Star Wars to fans old and new. Nothing but praise from me for this one.....and hopefully now we've established this is the Star Wars we like, we can see a truly excellent development of this plot over Episode VIII & IX, taking it to new places and truly giving us the follow up saga that George Lucas should've given us so long ago.

BEST SCRIPT

01. Inside Out (7 votes)

02. Room (3 votes) [3 second preferences]

03. Brooklyn (3 votes) [1 second preference]

04. Spy (1 vote) [2 second preferences]

05. Joy (1 vote) [1 second preference]

06. Carol (0 votes) [1 second preference]

07. Trainwreck (0 votes) [0 second preferences]

This is one that I wasn't expecting Inside Out to walk away with at all but it ended up doing so. It does have a very strong script though with some of my favourite quotes including the emotional 'Take her to the moon for me. Okay?' and just little gems like 'All these facts and opinions look the same. I can't tell them apart'

Room is a excellently written book so it was nice to see Emma Donoghue return to write the script for the film, she managed to fit some lovely dialogue in like Ma explaining how she was abducted and some great humour and cute moments from Jack.

Brooklyn works so well as a film and the script is one reason for that, I think homesickness is something that everybody can relate too so a lot of the script made the film feel so familiar which for me is one of the reasons that the film is so good.

Spy has some fantastic jokes and well-written characters so no surprise to see it do well here but it's difficult for it to compete with the big Oscar nominated scripts above it.

This was one of the shock Joy nominations in my opinion because critics didn't really like it but I thought the script was very uplifting and funny at times too so deserving of its place her in my opinion.

I would definitely but Carol higher here, I'm not sure of it's the acting or dialogue itself but I feel like with the character of Carol you listen to every syllable she says because she's so enticing. I've mentioned it before but the way the script works with the 'everything comes full circle' line is something I love too.

Trainwreck had some good jokes too but I think Spy was funnier and didn't get bogged down in weird drama parts either which was a big fault with the script I thought so not too sad to see it come bottom here.

BEST ANIMATION

http://i67.tinypic.com/fxf4mr.jpg

01. Inside Out- 9

02. Home- 3

03. Big Hero 6- 2

04. Shaun The Sheep: The Movie- 1

05. Hotel Transylvania 2- 0

Inside Out completely walks this. Pixar's critically acclaimed animation got stellar reviews from audiences and critics alike and became one of Pixar's highest grossing movies. The film walks the category with a massive 9 votes!

A very nice surprise in 2nd place as Dreamworks incredibly cute, so underrated, and my personal favourite animation of the year Home beats out BP nominee Big Hero 6. Home is so cute and fun and it is a really nice animation.

Big Hero 6 was released at the start of the year and surprisingly only got 2 votes, glad it didn't get higher than 3rd! The adorable Shaun The Sheep Movie picked up 1 vote and the funny sequel Hotel Transylvania 2 got a massive nul points!

Obvious winner was obvious but I'd have liked to see Shaun the Sheep get more recognition, I think it's flown under the radar a bit but imo it's definitely up there with Inside Out and Big Hero 6 in terms of quality! Surprised the latter was beaten by Home which was solid, but not much more.
The winner is DADDY'S HOME / KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE with four votes each (plus two second preferences)

(3rd Jurassic World / 4th Hotel Transylvania 2 / 5th Straight Outta Compton / 6th Star Wars: The Force Awakens)

We have a couple of ties tonight, maybe we should run a poll afterwards just to split them?? Both would be deserving winners imo, had very very good box office performances that surpassed my personal expectations. Jurassic World in 3rd of course did an outstanding job, but it was always expected to be huge no doubt about it.

I actually disagree about 'Jurassic World'. I expected it to open big (like $60m-$70m big) but no WAY was I every thinking it'd open up with the numbers it did and have the stability that it did. It could've just as easily been another 'Jurassic Park 3' situation, imo! :o

Some interesting winners. Like Joy winning best character (over Sadness? :( )! Really think Sadness or Baymax should've won that, but Ava is a brilliant joint winner! Just EW at 'Home' beating 'Big Hero 6' though! :drama:

MOST ATTRACTIVE ACTRESS

01. Margot Robbie- 5

02. Alicia Vikander- 3 (2 second preferences)

02. Jennifer Lawrence- 3 (2 second preferences)

04. Scarlett Johansson- 2 (6 second preferences)

05. Jessica Chastain- 2 (1 second preference)

06. Rose Byrne- 0

Yay at Queen Margot winning *.* Margot Robbie is one of my favourite actresses around and she is also my ultimate girl crush so a very well deserved winner here  With roles in Tarzan and Suicide Squad this year, as well as a Tina Fey comedy, this should be a good year for her!

The also gorgeous Alicia Vikander and Jennifer Lawrence (who actually had 0 votes for a long time :o) both took joint 2nd place and Scarlett was in 4th, and despite only getting 2 first prefereneces, she scooped a gigantic 6 second preferences! Redhead Jessica Chastain comes 5th while Spy's Rose Byrne picked up no first preferences and came last.
