It's just a good song. Thoroughly outclassed by the genuine classics around it here, not just in the top 10 but the top 20/30. And not even a patch on Jump.

10. The Power of Goodbye //Ray of Light // 8.93

(5: princess_lotti // 11: Joe, Mango 10: River lea, Regina, Kylie Jackson, Qween, mr_pmt, Alejandjob. Ultraviolence., Jay, Liamk97 )

Here we have the first of three songs from Ray of Light to make an appearance in this fabulous top 10. I'm always surprised how this song does in popularity contests, because it's nowhere near as iconic as probably anything else in the top 20, it wasn't a particularly big hit and you don't really hear it anywhere anymore (unless by choice). I am, however very pleased to see it so high given the fact that it's within my top 3 Madonna songs (with Papa and Express Yourself, for those who care). Everything from the production, to the lyrics to the vocals are haunting. I read somewhere (maybe here?), that Madonna will only ever do this on tour again when it's her final tour as it's very special to her, and it's very easy to see why.

Lotti though calm down.

What a STUNNER. One of her absolute best for sure. I would die to be on the tour when she performs it live so countdown to that. Everything about it is special, with a particular shoutout to the music video - haunting.

Song kills me everytime.

YAAS, well not really given it's only #10 but still that's obviously an excellent result for an excellent song. The production in particular is just sublime, as with everything on Ray Of Light it's so layered and deep and even 10 years from first hearing it I'm still finding new parts to love. Of course the lyrics, sentiment and video are also wonderful too, she has rarely matched image to theme and tone so perfectly.
Die Another Day above 4 Minutes? Seriously?

I can remember in an interview with capital radio Madonna mentioned that William hated the power of goodbye . However she didn't and this made her more determined for it to be a single .

I love the video , Madonna and the director butted heads all the way through the shoot too.

Lotti's regret over her scores just gives even more reason to re-do this ultimate singles rate a couple of years down the line! :D

I am so up for this being a (maybe) two-year thing! My taste changes quite often and a fair few tracks that I ignored a bit previously snuck up and stole the big points before this so it's always exciting. Especially with someone with a catalogue as EXPANSIVE as this.

Also apologies, I need to sleep in a few mins, so the next set coming TOMORROW now. We will get this done soooon so let the hype continue ~

I think it was my turn to post so dw, it's me that's flopping. :P I have a large catch-up post impending as well...

Just let the music set you free

09. Into the Groove // Like a Virgin // 8.97

Missing out on 8th place due to less 11s is Into the Groove, Madonna's first UK #1 and best seller (both feats, I imagine, largely down to the level of hype attained by her Live Aid performance a couple of week before). It returns to the themes of escapism that were present in her earlier music, but has a much bolder sound that's more joyous than anything else she had done at that point and carries the sexual innuendos that were a common feature in her current work. Partying can be considered a rather generic lyrical theme but, when Madonna does it, she seems to pinpoint perfectly the emotions and ecstasy you feel in that environment, as well as having the melody to match that is instantly euphoric from start to finish. That's probably why it has such lasting appeal: it just speaks to generation after generation and will always be firm 80s party favourite for its ability to make you wanna get into the groove.

ohhhh really thought Into The Groove would be #1 overall... it's probably my #1 and might be the best song of the 80s

Always surprised that this is Madonna's highest selling single! It's nowhere near as well known as Like a Prayer/Virgin. It's a fun song, but actually, as far as her 80s singles go, it'd be in the lower half for me.
