Regina is a man of NO PRINCIPLES whatsoever, so that cannot possibly be the case.

It takes more strength to cry, admit defeat

Madonna's most recent UK #1 and last proper big hit, 4 Minutes, commences the Top 30. It's hard to avoid the obvious bandwagon-hopping with the Timberlake and Timbaland features, but I just adore the production. From the very opening notes, it sounds so important and grand with its marching band-esque rhythm, brass instruments, horns and bells, and I think such a strong intro is a key ingredient to a successful lead single. Also, I find this production to be what encourages me to re-listen when the lyrics get a bit tedious (which they often do). The main message of not wasting time is nice, and can be applied to anything really, from saving the world from global warming to just living for the moment, but the lyrics themselves are verging on basic and meaningless.

Give It 2 Me, the succeeding single, follows straight after - a collaboration with another flavour-of-the-moment, this time in the shape of Pharrell, which again resulted in solid results production-wise but also, I think, with improved lyrics and delivery. It combines themes of sex, dancing and being unstoppable with tinges of sarcasm and irony; the perfect summary to Madonna's career as she approaches 50 years of age. Madonna wanted a song that she "could have a great time doing...in a stadium" and this just comes alive on the stage and in the club.

Recorded for the purposes of her greatest hits collection of the same name, Celebration is quite literally that: a song that both encourages partying and, similarly to the song above, pays homage to her early dance routes that have served her well throughout her lengthy career. The pulsing house inspired groove is reminiscent to the fast energy present in such singles as 'Deeper and Deeper' but I think the ecstasy of this track is bounds higher than anything she's ever recorded, which makes for quite the ultimate celebration. That said, such focus on this production does sacrifice identity somewhat (it's certainly not recognisably Madonna) but it's enough of a banger to earn its place alongside a tracking list of her greatest.

Moving back to more distinct Madonna territory is one of her absolute best ballads, the glorious You'll See who's status as a lead single to a collection of exquisite Madonna balladry is undeniably deserved. We hear the return of the Spanish sounds but they create a much more sombre atmosphere that never fails to send shivers down my spine and the opening vocals alone signify how much more power Madonna can get behind them thanks to her preparation for starring in Evita. Of course, she's always had an incredibly emotive voice, but the many already effective lyrics in this song gain even more impact thanks to that power. She sings about a former lover (the subject to 'Take a Bow') and declares how she can survive without his love, but the message of the song is able to span much further due to the background surrounding it. It's a song about her critics who shunned her during the early 90s, but sung from the heart rather than the head like 'Human Nature'.

Concluding this bunch is the usually overlooked Drowned World (Substitute for Love) getting a pleasantly surprising (and above all, well-earned) amount of love. The melody and vocals are so dreamy and meditative, placing you in complete ease in order to really listen to the lyrics. Madonna reveals the reality to her "perfect" life: it may seem like she has it all made and, yeah, sure, she thought she wanted this universal adoration, but the thrill soon wears and leaves a cold, empty state. She's found that what really gives her purpose and completeness is the love she has for her newborn daughter, leading her to conclude that seeking fame and fortune was just a substitution for love. The key change half way through, the angelic humming (later sampled in DB Boulevard's 'Point of View') and the momentum built throughout the middle-8 just adds to the beauty and wonder of this magnificent song.

Yaas at You'll See making it that high, such a gorgeous vocal and lyrically it's a winner too. One of her most underrated singles in general.
4 Minutes did MORE THAN WELL. It's an average song that wouldn't be half as well liked in general if it wasn't Madge.

This.

^ oops! Giving 'Drowned World' its lowest score  I don't even dislike it, in fact quite the opposite it's just the other Ray of Light singles are SO SO SO huge for me and it has some album highlights too that I tend to forget about this one a bit :( Listening to it now again in isolation and I was definitely too harsh on it. Gah, SORRY that was a complete misjudgment. :(

'Celebration' is FANTASTIC, such a banger. I hear it sometimes in one of the clubs I go to often and it always goes OFF.

The Hard Candy singles are ok too although not really classics from her.

Not a huge fan of anything in this batch, which is surprising considering I've started to really lose some favourites. Nothing I actively dislike either. I loved Celebration, Give It 2 Me and 4 Minutes when they were released, but I never really go back to them.

You better get ready to go back to 'Celebration' if they play it at Marthas while we're there on Saturday night! (which they usually do :o)

Thought I recognised the title Celebration, I posted a remix of it q couple weeks ago but original is fab also :D
Oh and with that, all Hard Candy singles are out of the running too. *_*

None of which are REALLY a huge loss, Give It 2 Me might be if not the ming bogglingly awful 'Get Stupid' cowbell section.

The original and Benny Benassi remix are amazing.
