Posted September 29, 200620 yr I'm not that keen on Mariah's new sound from the last two albums. I wonder whether she will ever return to her former sound of pop that basically got her to where she is today.
September 29, 200620 yr It is easy to want the old days back. I think her albums should be more of a mix now. That way there is something on the album for everybody. She is expanding her fan base and I don't think it is likely that she would want to risk alienating the newly acquired fans by releasing an album which is completely retro, much as I would love for it to happen. Another alternative is the idea that Outkast had for their recent album. Two cd album with different types of material on it.
September 29, 200620 yr i still class her music as poppy really :D, with just a more RnB flavour
September 30, 200620 yr You're right not to enjoy listening to 'CharmBracelet'. I don't know what Mariah will do next. As I've said before in other threads, I'd like to see her trying out some new genres but then there's the risk she'll be compared to Madonna. I'd like some more pop songs on the next album but her older pop records (Someday, Now That I Know) would sound a bit dated now.
September 30, 200620 yr I want her to work with Walter Afanasieff (Hero, Love Takes Time, One Sweet Day) on the next album, but she's not friends with him anymore and hasn't worked on him since Butterfly (he helped her with Butterfly, My All, Outside, Whenever You Call - the best songs on Butterfly). She needs to work with him, along with JD for upbeat songs to have a diverse album... WBT doesn't compare to her older ballads, her older ballads have something WBT doesn't...
September 30, 200620 yr Author I think Mariah's new sound seems like she is trying to fit in with the current urban genre of music that is flooding the charts. I think pop music suited her voice better and allowed her to show off her vocals range better. I have listened to emanicipation of mimi but I really didnt like it and its the first of her albums I havent bought. I did buy charmbracelet but that was awful. Glitter was an excellent album and although that played around with the idea of some RnB material, the songs were still good and retained a kind of pop nature about them.
September 30, 200620 yr Mariah tried to do pop on Charmy, but she simply couldn't do it without Walter Afanasieff, they need to set their differences aside and work together :(

Glitter was very pop because it was an 80s themed. People say Mariah's latest albums are a cash-in (or like you say 'trying to fit in') but the music's been very slowly evolving. Obviously 'Mimi' is a lot more urban than 'Music Box or 'Mariah Carey', but there's no point in her career where you can see a definite change. 'Butterfly' still had the Walter ballads on it for example. I don't think how radio-friendly the recent Mariah songs have been is contrived as people make out.

Hmmm - it seems to be a common misconception that Mariah has just started doing R&B, and that isn't true. Mariah has been dabbling with R&B since 1995's Daydream, so R&B is nothing new to Mariah. I do agree that Glitter is a VERY underrated pop album. One of my favourite Mariah albums actually.
