New No1 not out in shops

NEW single Crazy by Gnarls Barkley is set to make music history this week  by going to number one a week BEFORE it is released in shops.

If the hip hop track, used on TV ads for BBC Radio 1, is top on Sunday, it will be the first time in the chart’s 54 years that a No1 single is not out in stores.

Crazy sold 8,000 copies on Monday through sites such as iTunes or Napster.

Morrissey’s You Have Killed Me, at No2, sold 5,500  but under 50 of those were downloads.

The charts have only recently included downloads. A spokesman for music store HMV said: “They have come of age.â€Â

This goes to show that downloads have increased, over this past year.

Physically this week so far, with just under 10k, Morrissey could have had the lowest ever No.1, if the chart was based on Sales only.

Shocking sales.

But if the charts were still based on sales only, people would download less. There'd never have been all that free publicity for iTunes when the chart rules had changed and lots of dedicated music fans would have kept buying a physical single to help their favourite artists' chart positions

PS And Morissey will probably end up behind Ne-Yo and Embrace by the end of the week.

Good point actually, never thought of it like that

That's a really good point.

No it wouldn't be the lowest No.1 cause it would reach 25-30k, with 5-6 the first day. By the way if there wouldn't downloads many fans would go out and buy a physical single.

The whole of the top 4 will all sell more than Orson did two weeks ago easily!

Why are sales still so low? Downloads were meant to boost sales, and its not exactly the post-Christmas slump anymore is it?

exacly its nearly april ffs

Apprently though track sales overall are quite healthy?

isnt there normally a lull at this time of year when there are not many records out?

Yeh, but this lull has lasted since Christmas. Usually there is at least one high week!

Yeah I thought that, somthings gone wrong down the line, I thought sales would be massive when they said downloads where added to the chart last year, but sales are lower now than ever!, I wonder what it would be like if downloads still had a seperate chart?!

It down to:

More downloads being sold before they are now included in the chart

Illegal downloading of songs

BUT it is still alarming how low sales are

Sales at the moment seem even lower than last year when we had the Elvis re-releases.

Goes to look in BuzzJack Chart library.
