There's always been talk on Buzzjack that as streaming grows the OCC might reduce the number of streams to make a sale to reflect that, would this be a good thing for the charts if it does happen?

I don't know why people keep saying this. It's entirely unnecessary because streaming is already having more and more influence on the chart because the numbers keep going up. If anything it should be switched to 200-1.

The ratio will very likely not be changed anytime soon. People should just accept how it is.

Though I do agree something should be done, I can't see it ever happening. I think the reality is is that we live in a streaming world now!

It's not that streaming is not being measured properly - it's that for decades listening habits were not being recorded properly. They could only record sales and not what was actually being listened to. Now the charts reflect more what is being listened to rather than what is selling.

They should add YouTube streams / plays too your listening to the song on there after all

But it's still far from perfect - 95% of the music I listen to is still offline, via my iPod - why should that not count towards the charts, while streamed ones do?

 

Plus, there's always the impossibility of measuring the popularity of illegally obtained music...

but who said the chart has to reflect what people listen to?

thats not the goal, streaming has been incorporated cos it generates money too, thats why, nos cos the occ wants the chart to show what you listen to, especially what you illegally listen to :)

The problem is primary and secondary school children (I am a teacher) they do not care about the chart at all. A huge percentage have no idea what is number 1 for example when I asked them.

 

I used to love every Sunday listening to the top 40 countdown with my family .

 

Surely the OCC want people to care about it ? I'm 31 and I am not bothered about the charts at all because I'm old school :)

...which would make no sense because the revenue generated from one sale is roughly equal to the revenue generated from 100 streams (which is the reason for the current ratio)

 

The majority of people don't care for what's in the chart, that's been the case long before streams came to the chart. Does it really matter that schoolchildren don't listen to/care for the chart like they may have done 20/30 years ago anyway? They're still consuming music in other ways.

Yes true but the song is still playing so it should count

if YouTube counted though the charts would be even slower, is that what you really want? :P

 

I'm personally against YouTube counting anyway as many people just watch for the video and not the song and it's impossible to tell who's watching for what reason. I don't think OCC have any plans to count YT plays into the chart anytime soon anyway.

Tbh no i don't really want any streaming but if you add some you should add all and whether I watchingfor just the video or for jjustthe song the song is still streaming and its already added to the billboard chart it likely to happen eventually

The ratio should stay the same. Since streaming is only growing, let the "sales" reflect that rather than changing the ratio.

Although I think streaming is ruining the chart and the ratio doesn't allow for much excitement these days, I would be somewhat annoyed if they changed the ratio. Now that they've been compiling charts based on the ratio 1:100, I think they're going to have to keep it that way. Imagine if they changed it to 1:1000 - I'd personally feel like they'd have to recalculate all the old charts and total 'sales' for songs that charted under 1:100 and that's just a messy situation. Basically, I don't like the fact it's 1:100, but for the sake of consistency I believe it should stay that way.

The streaming ratio shouldn't be reduced if streams are increasing.
