November 29, 20168 yr Fly On The Wings Of Love <3 It was a surprise Eurovision winner at the time, with odds of 150/1 or something before the contest but looking back it is a fantastic song (I just assume nobody expected a couple of middle age guys to win). The UK gave it 12 points I think, so it's not a surprise that the XTM cover resonated well. Interestingly, at around the same time XTM began to smash, Mickey Harte's Eurovision entry for Ireland in 2003, We've Got The World Tonight, also an Irish #1 single iirc, sounded pretty much exactly the same in terms of melody. That chart run is iconic though, 8 weeks between 8 and 10 *.* I was so happy it had such stability, the CD single was the first thing I ever bought with my first pay cheque from my first job, so quite a proud purchase
November 29, 20168 yr So as I've probs mentioned before, this was the track that changed everything for me. As a 14 year old I'd only really listened to pop before with little interest in hard rock or dance, and while XTM is certainly an example of dance in its more poppier form, it was the first track of its kind I'd not just liked but really really loved, helped a lot by The Box (as previously mentioned) playing it all the time for weeks and helping its astonishing for the time chart run. By 2004 dance was all I listened to, and I finally discovered most of the classics I'd missed back in the 1990s when I was too young to appreciate them. All thanks to XTM for helping to open my ears!

The first one I loved was Barcelona by DKay, Epsilon and Stamina MC. I remember singing the chorus to one of my friends at my school at the time, they didn't know the song though.
December 2, 20168 yr Some other songs during Fly on The Wings Of Love's mammoth dance number 1 reign 9-MgTXY-HCk Number 20, first week of FOTWOL. Mix of house and eurodance, perhaps a little similar in style to Inna's early 2010's songs QW9w8Wy2lpY Number 16, second week of FOTWOL. One of my favourite ever dance tunes here  Funky house at its best imo. :) A real precursor to the disco strings style that would start to dominate from summer 2004. 33gzuuUpprM Number 28 on the second week of FOTWOL. Good eurotrance tune from these, better than the I Wanna Dance With Somebody cover they did in early 2003 and Jo James voice is good on it. :dancing: _z1S9fKaqrw Number 35 Second week of FOTWOL. No original video sadly. Drum and bass/grime hybrid. Well ahead of its time in style. :o 3_mpk6NtX3o Number 16 on the third week of FOTWOL. Considerably more emotive and trancey than their other songs. I remember this one from the time. ujPl3A-22iI Number 17 on the third week of FOTWOL. Very trippy sounding funky house song. ReqPNqp8v14 Number 14, fourth week of FOTWOL. Ethereal sounding trance tune. Mostly an instrumental trance track, rare to make the charts by this stage. Colm would have liked it, I think :) RZc0O_xAAYo Number 40 fourth week of FOTWOL. No original video for this sadly. But this seems to be the last of the 80s trancepop covers that make the chart for a while (until a high pitched vocal one in late 2004). A good cover, but quite sad sounding though. 80iacTjcWvk Number 20, fifth week of FOTWOL. Deep house update of the classic early electronic tune. ik5bWUrnzGw Number 36, fifth week of FOTWOL. Trance cover of one of the earliest electronic dance tunes from 1977. DGi7i3YnjDw Number 37, fifth week of FOTWOL. Eurotrance song with Kelly Llorenna on vocals, and also as an actress in the video, which she also did for Heart Of Gold in 2004. A good tune. Edited December 2, 20168 yr by Emperor Blizzard
December 2, 20168 yr Of course there is another one present during the time of Fly On The Wings Of Love's popularity tjat broke its reign at dance number 1. It is a track that I like as it just sounds so summery.
December 3, 20168 yr Fly on the Wings of Love <3 One of my 00s faves, I always thought it sounded very Eurovision-esque so I'm not surprised to see that was the case. Insane chart run though, so completely out of place in 2003.

Insane chart run though, so completely out of place in 2003. Well I didn't really like Fly on The Wings Of Love at the time because of the cheesy eurodance nature of the song, but I do.appreciate it now. It would be.interesting if Imani Williams did a cover of this song, her voice to me sounds very similar in tone and style to Annia's.
December 3, 20168 yr To me quite a few Eurotrance songs from the early 00s sound very Eurovisuony, especially Lasgo's Surrender. I do remember there were quite a few tunes in the contest at the time that had eurotrance production in the early 00s. There was a lot of sort of folk dance for belly dancing production I remember following the success of Every Way That I Can. By the way speaking of Eurovision, was Loreen's Euphoria eurotrance?

December 3, 20168 yr The next entry in our rundown will be posted sometime tomorrow, during the hours of sunlight... The next one I remember from the time and is one of my favourites from 2003, so summery sounding. If a eurotrance song was to be a hit now it would probably sound like it too, it even has elements of Lost Frequencies style acoustic guitar in it.
December 5, 20168 yr Author DJ Sammy (feat. Carisma) - Sunlight Date 15th Jun 2003 1 Week Official Chart Run 8-13-20-22-30-36-38-50-69-x (9 weeks) XWAX2gtFRWs Now here's one I'm not overly familiar with. Most people associate DJ Sammy with just 'Heaven' but he in fact had four UK top 10 hit singles. This was the third of those and also the only that wasn't a cover version. It's what we've come to expect from him though in terms of production, with its commercial eurotrance breakdown, female vocal (credited to Dutch singer Carisma, better known as Loona - who also sang on Sammy's 'The Boys Of Summer') and pop song structure. Nothing too special really, but probably something I would have enjoyed a fair bit at the time if I was an active chart follower then. It was released in Europe as the second single from 'Heaven' in May 2002, however the UK got it as the third single a year later. It also made the top 40 charts of Belgium, Ireland, Netherlands and Australia although it would only make the top 10 in the UK. One more hit would follow, a cover version of Annie Lennox's 'Why' which featured German singer Britta Medeiros. It reached #7 two years after 'Sunlight' charted, however it does not make this rundown so here is where we say goodbye to Sammy.
December 5, 20168 yr I really like this...so summery...I actually remember it from the time and I think I liked it. I actually prefer it to the other DJ Sammy songs. It is a just a little bit like a faster Prayer In C: the acoustic guitar in the verses leading up to the trancey sounding synths. I would go as far to say if a eurotrance song was to become a hit now it would probably sound a lot like this song. That video is like Doctor Blind's one for Wasting My Life  Random weather scenes. Edited December 5, 20168 yr by Snowsnake
December 6, 20168 yr The next one is completely different to what we have seen so far on the thread....I don't really remember it much from the time but it is a really iconic track, as well as one which arguably started a new genre.
December 6, 20168 yr Author yes, I think the next entry will satisfy more people than 'Sunlight'. I certainly think it's a right banger!
December 6, 20168 yr DJ Sammy (feat. Carisma) - Sunlight Thought this was okay, and not much like 'Prayer In C', that's an odd comparison.
December 6, 20168 yr Thought this was okay, and not much like 'Prayer In C', that's an odd comparison. Well you know the acoustic guitar in the verses leading into the trancey synths. Obviously Sunlight is quite a bit faster.

December 6, 20168 yr Sorry I don't find anything about 'Prayer In C' to be trancey... The synths and buildup are a bit trancey, but then it drops back to tropical house after making the song definitely not trance. The whole song would be progressive house. I was more comparing the instrumentation of the song to Sunlight. The next song on this thread is great, probably my favourite of its subgenre to make dance number 1 apart from another one in the same subgenre in 2005.
