March 6, 20178 yr Why would they get more promotion in the New Year, I don't really see how the New Year affected promotion much.....especially with loads more new songs entering the chart in the new year in the 00s as it was a busy chart back then! Well ignoring Katie Melua from my example, more downtempo tracks tended to do well in Q4 while people move swiftly onto upbeat tracks in Q1 as they start the new year. So tracks that were looking to be low/medium size hits a la 'Out Of Touch' or 'Hey Ya!' suddenly got more recognition. That's just a theory anyway :P I'd imagine there are more examples of tracks that bounced back into the new year like that.
March 6, 20178 yr Other dance tracks during Out Of Touch's reign at the top of the dance charts: #23 Lisa Scott Lee and Intenso Project - Get It On - I don't like this funky house song (one of the few I don't  ) because of the lyrics about putting a record on the radio are cringeworthy imo and the vocal is very poppy. At least they are being honest with the lyrics about the reason for the song, that they want to hear their record on the radio! I may remember it a bit from the time. #28 Mousse T and Emma Lanford - Right About Now - I think I remember this, and it is quite nice, but I wouldn't consider this a dance song though (even though Mousse T is a dance producer). #28 100% ft. Jennifer John - Just Can't Wait (Saturday) - Nu-disco/funky house song which samples the song used as the Saturday Night Takeaway theme tune. Don't really remember this from the time (might remember the video a bit) but it actually spent 4 weeks top 40 which is a long time for a #28 peaking hit back then. Great tune anyway! The 'Stonebridge Radio Edit' is better than the original imo, not sure which version charted though. #38 Skandi Girls - Do The Can Can - Never heard this before, and that's probably a good thing  . It is some novelty Eurodance version of the Can Can song. #11 Lethal Bizzle - Pow (Forward) - Why was this not included in the dance number 1s countdown I wonder, danG. Definitely is dance imo (if '21 Seconds' by So Solid Crew was, why not this?) and charted 2 places higher than Out Of Touch that week. I don't agree with the violent lyrics that got it banned from radio and TV but nevertheless it is an excellent grime song, one of the classics of grime. Unsurprisingly, given it was banned from radio and music channels, I don't remember this from the time. Edited March 6, 20178 yr by The Wise Sultan
March 6, 20178 yr omg Call On Me!! Definitely better than the Starley song of the same name and that's high praise indeed considering both are awesome tunes. that Eric Prydz track is totally timeless tho, definitely something I'd love to see in the charts nowadays and it's a real shame that we can't see dance like that get popular. it's definitely a lot more formulaic these days :( not gonna lie I didn't recognise Lola's Theme just from the title of the track, but obviously I recognised it when I heard it. remember hearing it on the radio when I was like 5 or something. the video is very retro, I love old dance videos - they really capture the culture and trends of the time and this is no exception  two great classics!
March 6, 20178 yr I really need to start following this more, I love old dance tracks (if anything they make me sad that we don't see tracks like them in the charts nowadays), from now on I'll be giving everything a listen as I've found a fair few gems from my time reading some of these posts.
March 6, 20178 yr I dont think Capital existed back then, I thoight it was called Galaxy! 23 isn't a great position for such a poppy sounding dance track I agree. So that's 2004 finished on the thread and Out Of Touch was a great way to end the year. 2004 was such a change in chart dance genre types with house dominating rather than the eurotrance we had seen in mid-late 2003. Lola's Theme and Call On Me/Out Of Touch would set up the model for retro influenced vocal disco house and various remixes of 80s songs for 2005 and early 2006. Either way it seemed like anything retro sounding was back in fashion dancewise. 2005 starts with easily one the cheesiest songs that made dance number 1 during the 00s.

Yay welcome to the thread mdh. :cheer: It was getting a bit quiet here tbh so you coming along for the journey is welcome. Yes I think we are due a 00s dance genres revival soon. We had a couple of livelier house tunes amidst the usual chilled stuff last year which was good. I am hoping Bakermat - Baby becomes a hit as it sounds a little bit production and vocal style-wise like some of the retro sounding vocal house songs coming up in 2005, although it is very unlikely it will be a hit, at least in the UK. Poor trance needs to have a revival soon as well! We haven't had a trance hit in a long time. Edited March 6, 20178 yr by The Wise Sultan

March 6, 20178 yr Pow being a grime song doesn't fall under the dance umbrella. Grime is urban Grime comes from UK Garage though, and has a fast beat and is often electronic, I thought grime was both urban and dance! You are the dance music expert though. :D
March 6, 20178 yr Dan is referencing an infamous Lisa's quote from a reality show when she got to knew the chart position. LR3-1DkBQuE  I was hoping the song's lyrics may have been a parody of artists wanting their record played on the radio, that just makes the song even worse knowing it wasn't.

March 6, 20178 yr Author 2005 gives us quite a few more number ones than 2004 did, there are 21 to review. Many of them one-weekers but we do have one song spending even longer at #1 than 'Call On Me' did.
March 6, 20178 yr Grime comes from UK Garage though, and has a fast beat and is often electronic, I thought grime was both urban and dance! You are the dance music expert though. :D UK Garage is both dance and urban. Grime stems from it but leans a lot more towards the urban side
March 6, 20178 yr All of them were only good in an 8/10 sort of way but I was desperately trying to fill an Alice Deejay sized void in my life, and iirc this act had the same production team behind it. (Back For Me was very Will I Ever in sound too...) I find "Lose This Feeling" a lot more similar to "Will I Ever". "Back For Me" was clearly "Back In My Life" inspired I remember "If I Were You" spent at the time the longest run at #1 on my personal chart. I too was longing from some Alice DJ eurotrance sounds
March 6, 20178 yr  I was hoping the song's lyrics may have been a parody of artists wanting their record played on the radio, that just makes the song even worse knowing it wasn't. I always thought the lyrics were a euphemism for 'having a smashing time' if you know what I mean.
March 6, 20178 yr Deep Dish - Flashdance the only non dance number 1 making the top 10 selling dance tracks of the year. Made number 3 officially during Call In Me's reign at number 1. I love old dance videos - they really capture the culture and trends of the time and this is no exception Sadly a lot of the dance videos of the mid 00s, especially following the Call On Me one's success don't really have much in the way of culture.
March 6, 20178 yr Those are some abysmal sales! I reckon multiply them by 4 or 5 for their equivalent 2017 sales.

I too was longing from some Alice DJ eurotrance sounds The Alice Deejay eurotrance sound is very nostalgic and thats why I liked Marshmello's Alone recently as it has a very Alice Deejay style buildup if not drop. I have kind of lumped Candee Jay in with the other eurotrance songs in 2004 in my mind up to now such as the Styles and Breeze and Ultrabeat ones, but I suppose it does sound different in style and more like Alice Deejay.
