Wanted to go back to this question I posted in the 90s thread last year, when we were on Orbital - The Saint:

Despite the suggestions I wasn't able to find it, and still don't know the name, but I've made a hilariously terrible MIDI/mp3 recording of my hazy memory of it:

Yeah, I know it's bad :P But does it ring any bells for anyone as to what I mean?

Intriguing, it sounds a bit like this from the description:

Did you get anywhere with this Billy? I thought of another brassy song that used to be everywhere in the late 90s too (thanks to the return of Streetmate, where it serves as the theme tune):

I'm starting to think it was a random piece of library music, still haven't been able to trace it. One day I'll try making an actual professional (ish) sounding version that sounds as close to how my mind remembers it as possible, see if that brings up any result!

Bizarre, it may well have been perhaps.

I know it obviously won't be either of these but as an aside I used to enjoy the fact that at some point in the early 00s practically every song from both Daft Punk's Discovery and Royksopp's Melody A.M. was used as a soundbed on various TV shows/in adverts.

Right, I do apologise I promised this by Monday - I ended up getting mild concussion on the Sunday night so have been a bit out of it since

Next number 1 coming TONIGHT!

Cascada - Truly Madly Deeply

http://images.eil.com/large_image/CASCADA_TRULY+MADLY+DEEPLY-382056.jpg

Date: 17th December 2006

Weeks at #1: 3 weeks

Official Chart Run: 17-4-5-5-7-10-13-18-20-28-28-32-48-49-64-79-80-71-80-92-85-94-93 (16 weeks top 75 +7 top 100)

Another number 1, another cover! This time German Eurodance group Cascada follow up their massive summer hit "Everytime We Touch" with their version of Australian duo Savage Garden's "Truly, Madly, Deeply" - a worldwide smash hit from 1998. The single version of Cascada's version was a Eurodance mix of the accompanying album ballad version.

The track assured Cascada would not be a one-hit wonder in the UK with the single peaking at number 4 on its 2nd week in the chart. It then went to spend almost 4 months in the top 75 and a massive 23 weeks in the top 100. Pretty impressive stuff.

Cascada - comprised of vocalist Natalie Horler, and DJs Yanou (of "Heaven" fame by DJ Sammy) and Manian - went on to have a string of other hits on top of their 2 top 5 smashes, including one further top 10 hit from their debut album "Miracle" (#8). The lead single from their 2nd album "What Hurts The Most" - a cover of Jo O'Meara (or Rascal Flatts depending on which way you look at it) also hit the top 10, whilst a change in direction towards RedOne-style pop saw them manage their first and only UK number 1 single with "Evacuate The Dancefloor" (featuring Carlprit) in 2009. Cascada went on to represent Germany at Eurovision in 2013 with song "Glorious", though they failed to meet expectations.

Its definitely more late 2002-early 2003 when the likes of Soda Club and Jan Wayne were doing cheesy hard dance covers than late 2006. Weird it became so big, it doesn't really sound like a top 5 hit. I do quite like it though.

Other tracks making the charts at the time.

Fantastic tune, and the end of an era as it was the last looped 80s remix to do very well in the charts. Very different to the other ones, this has a slower synthpop type beat. I thought it was a fun track at the time but like it even more now. The final drop is brilliant. The production is also very atmospheric which I like.

#31

A bit like the Max Graham remix of Yes' Owner Of a Lonely Heart in that what it mostly adds to the original is a house beat, but there are some electro sound effects in it too. Decent remix. Don't remember it from the time.

Very good tune, prefer this to Dancing in the Dark. Uses those PC Music reminiscent synths in the drop as Dancing in The Dark does. Sadly this is the end for both Micky Modelle and the end for at least the ballad form of eurotrance/trancepop in the charts (although there are two songs I would say are eurotrance/trancepop in 2008 - Angel in The Night by Basshunter and Raindrops (Encore Une Fois) by Sash vs Stunt).

I always thought it was a mix of Cascada making a big name for themselves after the HUGE "Everytime We Touch" (partly for the blokes all fancying Natalie Horler) and the song they were covering to be honest.

To go to #4 and stay Top 5 over Christmas is pretty impressive! Definitely remains one of my favourite Cascada songs
Met the half of the Freemasons who was DJing last night and had a good chat with him about the Freemasons and any plans - will let you know in due course :) sound bloke btw! I was totally stoked!

Fantastic, which one was it? Hopefully they will stick with violiny funky house if they are going to release another song, like their two first charting singles as they were best at that imo! Their third charting single 'Rain Down Love' with Siedah Garrett was very good though imo too, that will be coming soon on the thread in early 2007, although not as a dance number 1 sadly.

Sadly not as James is settling down now with a family and on top of that there is no money in putting the time and resources into making hit singles anymore in this era and in their genre. Nor are the remixes worthwhile in that sense but they'll be touring - they do a lot of prides as it goes. They know they have a lot of gay anthems

I also asked if they'd ever produce a Eurovision song and they said absolutely not, it's the kiss of death

We had a good chat about the big divas they've remixed for. I was allowed to play their remix of Shakira's hit that never was "Loca" at the end of my set which was cool!

I also learned they also were Phats & Small (with Ben Ofoedu) which is probably something I should've known all along...

Well the likes of Clean Bandit and Louisa Johnson's Tears is not a million miles from their style of music, although that was about a year ago!

A better year for dance music in 2006 as all the top 10 sold >100k copies each and the top four made the EOY top 40. All ten made the EOY top 100 as well as other dance tracks from The Source & Candi Staton, Booty Luv, Chicane, Paul Oakenfold and Armand van Helden.

Snakey will start 2007 shortly (*nudge*) which contains 17 Dance #1s, an improvement from 2006's 14 (our lowest total to date but we'll see even less in 2008 and 2009). There will be re-appearances from the likes of Cascada, Booty Luv and Fedde Le Grand to look forward to as well as the introduction of one of the biggest dance music artists of all time.

Now's also the best time to unveil my YouTube recaps of the Dance #1s so far (although I have yet to make a 2004 recap).

This is the 2006 one, the rest are on my channel.

  • 2 weeks later...
Will do the next one on Saturday 23rd September, I have been busy recently so apologies but I am ready for Sat 23rd with one that danG I would say would almost certainly think was a proper tune.

Eric Prydz vs Floyd - Proper Education

517SsYBFCnL.jpg

Date: 7th January 2007

Weeks at #1: 3 weeks

Official Chart Run: 77-2-2-5-10-12-16-25-28-47-70 (11 weeks)

This was the very late follow up to Call On Me in the UK. Luckily for Eric Prydz, not featuring on the UK chart for over 2 years didn't do him any harm (he was still a very big name in the dance scene) and Proper Education debuted at #2 in its first week (held off the top spot by the X Factor 2006 winner's song, A Moment Like This - by Leona Lewis), definitely aided by the fact in its popularity that was a remix of a very well known song by Pink Floyd. Pink Floyd is just credited as 'Floyd' in it for some reason on the single art and in the official charts. Rather like 'You See The Trouble In Me' by Black Legend back in 2000 it was a mix of the original song and some cool, underground sounding house beats (although YSTTIM was a cover unlike this one), although the genre is electro/bass house rather than the minimal tribal house of 'You See the Trouble In Me'.

The video, filmed in black and white, features some schoolchildren running rampage and breaking into houses, but rather than doing bad things like stealing things, they are eco-warriors replacing traditional lightbulbs with energy efficient varieties, turning thermostats down and turning off TVs left on.

I don't remember Proper Education much from the time weirdly (given that it is a well known song being remixed), maybe a little though. Now, I think it's a very good remix. It is grown on me a lot though from when I first discovered it and I think I like it more than Pjanoo now but not as much as Call On Me. I do certainly prefer Proper Education to our next dance number 1.

Two more dance songs making the charts at the time.

#27 This is excellent! Phattus Tuneus indeed as it says in the video (it has parodies of Latin species names in the video for various forms of dancing and things happening). Don't remember it from the time, but it is a 90s dance inspired tune that deserved to do better in the charts than #27 imo (at least it managed two weeks at #27 though).

#12 Another brilliant imo uplifting dance tune from Freemasons (featuring another excellent vocalist on this one, Siedah Garrett). Amanda Wilson had gone for the minute from the Freemasons' productions but would return in 2008 with them on an excellent cover of Gusto's Disco's Revenge, and would then join Tim Berg in 2010 with Seek Bromance (uncredited though).

Don't remember Rain Down Love much from the time. Sadly this sort of uplifting vocal house would not be making the charts as much from now on, with the growing trend for mostly spoken word focused electro house.

I like the atmosphere of the "Proper Education" remix - although of his 3 big hits, it's my least favourite. That said it's still noteworthy and a good update of a classic hit (not sure if I'm keen on the original, personally...!)

Also love that Freemasons track. They deserved more success in the charts than they had - better than their Phats & Small material if you ask me :P
