December 8, 20177 yr Destination Calabria is brilliant, love the sax sample. Apologies for me forgetting about this, thanks Snake for filling in (wish I'd have done that for when you were tardy :P) Just heard the original Destination Unknown track by Alex Gaudino and Crystal Waters for the first time when compiling this, I like the production in that too. But I suppose the saxophone sample from Rune - Calabria is more distinctive. Are you happy to do the next one then or will I fill in for that too? Edited December 9, 20177 yr by Snow❄Diploughmat
December 8, 20177 yr 'Destination Calabria' will always associate with my classmate with whom we were jumping high on that song in her flat, and after that I have never seen her again. :D Also LOVE 'Feels Like Home', 'Last Night a DJ Saved My Life' and 'Music Matters'!
December 9, 20177 yr Let me do the next few please. I know why you would want to do the next one although I wasn't a fan up to recently, I now think it is brill, definitely my fave dance number 1 of 2007.
December 9, 20177 yr I know why you would want to do the next one although I wasn't a fan up to recently, I now think it is brill, definitely my fave dance number 1 of 2007. My favourite of 2007 is my favourite song of all time  can't be too far off now!
December 9, 20177 yr Destination Calabria always makes me think of first year uni, even though I didn't start til September 2008 there were still plenty of '07 songs being played in clubs then. It's fun but not one I've revisited much since.
December 9, 20177 yr I wonder is danG going to get down the next entry on here tonight? Edited December 9, 20177 yr by Snow❄Diploughmat
December 9, 20177 yr Author Groove Armada (feat. Stush & Red Rat) - Get Down Date: 6th May 2007 Weeks at #1: 2 weeks Official Chart Run: 32-9-20-30-42-61-66-x (7 weeks) YSg9Y-16fl4 Groove Armada are an English electronic music duo (Andy Cato and Tom Findlay) who formed in 1996 when they started their own club also named Groove Armada. Their chart success began in 1999 with 'If Everybody Looked The Same' (#25), 'At The River' (#19) and 'I See You Baby' (#17) - the latter would peak at #11 on 2004 re-release following its usage in an advert for Renault Megane, alongside the single promoting their Best Of set. It would take until 2007 for them to enter the UK top 10, and this also becomes their first Dance Chart number one. 'Get Down' was released as the first single from their fifth studio album 'Soundboy Rock' which itself peaked at #10. The song also made the top 40 in Australia and Italy, but otherwise it was mostly a British hit. It features vocals from British female rapper Stush and male Jamaican dancehall/reggae artist Red Rat. This isn't the first Groove Armada song to take inspiration from Jamaica as their 2001 #12 hit 'Superstylin' is also a mix of house, reggae and dancehall. It's a very unique song for its time, standing out amongst the current electro trend, with the focus put on the bassline which is quite filthy in comparison to other chart hits. It has aged very well too, not much would need to be done to make it sound like a song from 2017. The video is an interesting one too, made by Pleix it features animated dancing bunnies being filmed, and a few of them get caught doing it in the bathroom. :o We may be hearing from the Armada again very shortly...
December 9, 20177 yr Author Other dance hits at the time... #18. Dada feat. Sandy Rivera & Trix - Lollipop vq6avbbbg0M You can guess what they mean by 'you can lick my lollipop'. #5. Scooch - Flying The Flag (For You) {honourable mention} XT6yOIC6ihI We decided to not count this as a dance song, but as it's quite borderline it's well worth a mention. Here's a dance remix of it too which sounds very Clubland. mdCJ5G9vkOQ
December 9, 20177 yr Yep wasn't really a fan of 'Get Down' until recently but I think its brill now, Stush's brilliant imo rap on the electro house beat interspersed with small 80s/ disco influenced bits makes for an interesting song. I like the bits with the Red Rat vocal they are kind of the climaxes of the song. I think I remember this from the time, the 80s style bits between the vocal verses particularly which I liked the best. I didn't like the rest of the song as much I thought it was a bit in your face, as I did until recently. I like all of it now. Crazy but brilliant. The video is weird too especially those animated rabbits which are kind of cute (apart from in the aforementioned bathroom scenes). Pity it has been rather forgotten. I wouldn't really call Groove Armada's next charting single a bit later in 2007 'Song 4 Mutya' ft Mutya dance really, it is more pop than anything imo. As for Lollipop, I really like that 80s influenced instrumental particularly. I think I remember it from the time and liked it. Flying The Flag is of course a Europop classic. Thought it was humorous this song getting picked rather than the other more serious songs in the UK national final to represent the UK in Eurovision. Edited December 10, 20177 yr by Snow❄Diploughmat
December 9, 20177 yr "Get Down" was excellent, as was the follow up which is obviously coming very soon, so will comment on it then! Wasn't fussed on "Lollipop" and come on, did you really even consider Scooch for this? It's pop and it's REALLY terrible  Like, I was so embarrassed that represented us at Eurovision, even lower than Daz Sampson the year before. Yikes. Groove Armada had some excellent tracks, anyway, love "At The River" and "If Everybody Looked The Same" and obviously "I See You Baby".
December 9, 20177 yr I wouldn't really call Groove Armada's next charting single a bit later in 2007 'Song 4 Mutya' ft Mutya dance really, it is more pop than anything imo. While it has a pop structure it is more of an electronic dance hit, quite 'new wave' but bought up-to-date. Not like all the nonsense we get these days that gets called 'dance' when it clearly isn't.

There is one other Eurovision entry that made the charts and I would consider it more dance, danG I am sure will post it with the other 'also made the chart' ones after he posts our next dance number 1.

"Euphoria" is a debatable one, but the only one I can think of is the XTM cover of the Olsen Brothers from 2003 Oh do you mean Verka? Edited December 10, 20177 yr by Lenny
December 10, 20177 yr "Euphoria" is a debatable one, but the only one I can think of is the XTM cover of the Olsen Brothers from 2003 Oh do you mean Verka? "Euphoria" I definitely would consider dance. Progressive house with even some elements of vocal trance. Yep it is Verka, I would call it dance as it is quite similar to 90s eurodance in production or the Gunther track that made dance number 1 on this list in 2004, obviously with additional folk influences. The next dance number 1 on this thread by the way has been rather overshadowed by its much bigger predecessor by its artist. Edited December 10, 20177 yr by Snow❄Diploughmat
December 10, 20177 yr We have to be careful classifying commercial artists pushing the dance-pop sound as dance though. What about "Only Girl (In The World)" by Rihanna for instance? Is Verka Eurodance or Eastern European pop?
December 10, 20177 yr We have to be careful classifying commercial artists pushing the dance-pop sound as dance though. What about "Only Girl (In The World)" by Rihanna for instance? Is Verka Eurodance or Eastern European pop? Or Chris Brown - Don't Wake Me Up which is another example. Both tracks regardless of chart position won't be included as dance number 1s in a 10s dance number 1s thread. I haven't heard any of Verka's other material and don't know whether it is more poppy than 'Dancing Lasha Tumbai', if it is more poppy it would put 'Dancing Lasha Tumbai' in line with 'Only Girl in the World' and 'Don't Wake Me Up' in not being technically deemed a dance song. Verka I feel is more like Ruslana ("Wild Dances") - it’s just the sound of pop music over in Eastern Europe in the 00s... when I think of dance music from that region I think of Inna, Edward Maya, Alexandra Stan etc My opinion though - there are so many grey lines!
December 10, 20177 yr I wonder will we get a shiny new analysis of our next dance number 1 on this thread soon from danG? Edited December 10, 20177 yr by Snow❄Diploughmat
December 10, 20177 yr Author The next one won't be until Wednesday afternoon. I need to do a lot of uni assignment work over the next few days, I will also be suspending the retro forum Advent Calendar for now.
