Isn't it a student poll? Where do 40 year old's come into it?

I think it's the "all-time favourite" bit that's annoyed some of the posters of, shall we say, more advanced years, on here. But I agree with your point, x-The_Royston_Poisoner-x, this list seems pretty acurate to what current students like to listen to at the moment, and as all these lists/polls are relative anyway, I don't think there's a huge problem with the selection on there.

(On a side note, I think it's possible for 40 year olds to be students- though obviously most people do it when they're between 18-21.)

I can't say I agree with the list. None of the songs will be remembered in 20 years time except a few of them imo -_-
Well we know that the Joy Division and Smiths tracks have stood the test of time :)

That's the thing with the "won't stand the test of time" argument. It's just speculation. There is no way of knowing whether any of these will be remembered in 20 years until 20 years have passed.

Indeed, and I feel I should re-word what I said nonetheless: "Well we know that the Joy Division and Smiths tracks are remembered 20+ years on :)"

Naive being in there is ridiculous - how do you dance to it exactly?

You can't yet it's always played.

Often around the same time as 'Maneater'. I'm not sure why.

I think The Strokes themselves will probably be remembered themselves as if it wasn't for them (and The Libertines of course) half of those bands on there probably wouldn't be there (The Smiths had a HUGE influence on them all too obviously) The top three are certainly the songs that have been definied the past couple of years so it's likely those songs MIGHT be remembered but I'll certainly still play them in twenty years myself anyway.

and thought by now everyone would have forgotten who the strokes are   , you know how things turnover

i dont think its that bad a title do you?

My student anthem would have been....

The Smiths - How Soon Is Now

Can not agree more - one of the all-time classics and it sums it all up for me.

If they'd never used the prefix - "All-Time" (which implies that you're going back a fair few years...) then there would be no real problem, but they did, which was rather foolish of them....

Why do people get wound up over these lists though? Everyone will have forgotten about this list in a week's time, by which point some magazine or TV programme will have made up yet another "Top Ten Whatever Of All Time".

Channel 4 no doubt

(actually i quite like looking at list shows even though you know none of the talking heads know what the fukk they are talking bout)

Even worse than NME readers then....

is there like a best ever student anthems as selected by intelegent jukeboxes in like a su or an indie pub?

or will the wyatters ruin it?

you need to add Stone Roses to your list GRIMLY FIENDISH...

can think of a few others but then just getting down to taste more...

how about something a bit fresh and I'll do a decent stab at the US version... anyone fancy it? Will take a bit of thought first so before I lose the brain cells I'll check

Would that include such names as Pixies, Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr, REM, Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, Superchunk, Slint, Tortoise, Pavement, Yo La Tengo, Buffallo Tom, Lemonheads. etc by any chance....?

the top 4 are a stark reminder that not only is the average NME readership age 12, it's also the average age of their writers.

And probably not too far away from the number of readers they actually have these days, too.

Poor old NME... it's days are rightfully numbered. Put this most sick of dogs out of its misery.....
