Posted October 5, 200618 yr Snow Patrol move into US top five Source: Music Week Snow Patrol have become the first British guitar band in 13 years to break into the top five of the Billboard Hot 100 after climbing a place to five this week with Chasing Cars. The Polydor act, whose releases come out through Interscope in the States, have finally cracked the top five having been stuck at number six on the chart for the previous three weeks. The last UK bands to chart so high on the chart all managed to do so in 1993 – Duran Duran (Ordinary World) and UB40 ((I Can’t Help) Falling In Love), the latter spending seven weeks at number one. Since then the only UK acts to break into the top five have been solo artists such as Elton John and Mark Morrison, duos including Everything But The Girl and vocal pop acts All Saints and Spice Girls. Snow Patrol are only the fourth UK act in total to make the Hot 100 top five this century, although they are the third so far this year following James Blunt who spent a week at number one with You’re Beautiful and Natasha Bedingfield whose Unwritten peaked at five. Dido was the first UK artist to hit the Hot 100 top five since the millennium, peaking at three with Thank You in 2001. Chasing Cars’ US success has been notably helped by exposure for the track in the closing scene of the second season finale of ABC’s hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. The programme was seen in May in the States by 23.8m viewers. The band completed a US tour on September 30 and are due to return to the market later this year. Their album Eyes Open holds this week at its peak position of 29 on the Billboard 200.
October 5, 200618 yr Wow, better then Coldplay, but they have to increase album sales. Yes they do, it's not doing much for their album sales really - whereas Gnarls Barkley, James Blunt and Natasha Bedingfield all sold shedloads after just one hit.
October 6, 200618 yr Natasha Bedingfield She is great, so pleased she found success in America  Must hear her new song :(
October 6, 200618 yr This goes to show that some people in the US like good music. Unlike most of the drivel (Green Day, Maroon 5 excepted) they churn out to us. Edited October 6, 200618 yr by Euro Music
October 6, 200618 yr I thought Speed of Sound got to Number 4 last year on the Hot 100? Are they not a guitar band?! Anyway, brilliant news for them :D
October 6, 200618 yr I thought Speed of Sound got to Number 4 last year on the Hot 100? Are they not a guitar band?! Speed Of Sound got to number 8. I think increased download sales are what has made this shift in what does well in the US chart. Because of practically non-existant physical sales the chart was mostly airplay in the early half of this century, so that's why you got the same 6 hip hop/R&B songs in the top ten all year long. Since they increased downloads, the Hot 100 has seen more guitar bands, pop acts and even some dance do well in their chart. You no longer have to be urban or an American Idol contestant to do well on the Billboard Hot 100 now, which is obviously a good thing.

Its good that guitar/pop/dance is doing well in the USA, its almost heartening!
October 6, 200618 yr Yes they do, it's not doing much for their album sales really - whereas Gnarls Barkley, James Blunt and Natasha Bedingfield all sold shedloads after just one hit. Gnarls Barkley isn't a British group. Not at all, it's just their first single happened to be released in the UK first, to capitalize on Radio 1's free promotion. And Cee-Lo was already fairly big in the USA. We just never heard of him in the UK, and for some reason thought we could call Gnarls Barkley a "UK first".
October 6, 200618 yr To be fair to Snow Patrol, their album sales are increasing I was also checking out the USA sales thread, and Natasha Bedingfield's album has only sold about 800,000 there Snow Patrol are nearing 400,000, with still some mileage in Chasing Cars left
October 6, 200618 yr i hope snow patrol can achieve huge american success they are the best band around by far at the moment

He didnt say they were British....the point he was making was about the albums.
