The classic 90s gameshow 'The Crystal Maze' is returning for a one-off special in aid of Stand Up for Cancer next month on Channel 4! It will be hosted by Stephen Merchant with the team consisting of Rio Ferdinand, Michelle Keegan, Jonnie Peacock, Sara Cox and Josh Widdicombe. In it's original run, it was one of Channel 4's highest rated shows and it is often named as one of the best UK gameshows. There are four zones that each contain a number of challenges, with the more challenges you complete, the more crystals you earn. The crystals give the contestants more time to complete the final challenge. The success of the show has led to a recent 'live immersive experience' being set up this year where the public can play the maze for themselves.

Are you looking forward to this one-off special and would you like to see a full series?

OMG I'd love to see this return for a proper series, it was amazing back in the day! I used to want to be on it so badly and was gutted when it ended.

Didn't realise they would just make Stephen Merchant into the original presenter because I'm sure the original one would be happy to do it?

It was filmed in the Crystal Maze experience which means its return makes sense as they didn't have to waste money on building a new set!

I quite enjoyed it although the celebrities were a bit dumb at times. I liked the comedic tone Stephen brought.

At 74, he's probably not as spritely as he was - not sure he'd be able to gallop off, taking a celeb by the arm like he used to.

Glad that it will be returning! It seems like they're going all out as well as they're building a new 30,000 square foot set rather than filming on the Crystal Maze experience set again and they've commissioned 20(!) new episodes!

Think Richard will be a great host as well.

wasn't a big fan of the celebrity special but I like Richard Ayoade (on Big Fat Quiz) so I'll give this another go.

Filmed at a new purpose built set that is over 30,000 square feet! (the Stand Up to Cancer special was filmed at the interactive Crystal Maze experience) It was created by the original designer .

There will be 20 hour long episodes (which may suggest it will be on in the daytime? or perhaps running at say 7/8:00 every weekday night?) and there will also be more special celebrity editions.

Looking forward to this, hopefully the people will be smarter than those in the Stand Up to Cancer special

Two new characters will be joining Richard Ayoade in the series. Adam Buxton will play Jarhead in the Futuristic Zone and Jessica Hynes will play The Knight in the Medieval Zone.

Confirmed contestants for the first episode (for Stand Up To Cancer) are Ore Oduba, Alex Brooker, Vicky Pattison, Louie Spence and Lydia Bright.

Richard Ayoade was so many kinds of amazing, him running around with the golden hand, his general despondency and then the marching off stage at the end have me totally SOLD.

Well I loved it and think Richard Ayoade is perfect as host. As for people complaining about 'Z Listers' - I recognised all of them just Louis Spence the only bad thing about it.. Can't wait for the next episode.

The new set looked brilliant! Richard was fab too, better than Stephen for me. His quick dry wit is perfect.
