Posted October 7, 200618 yr Hello. Can a Chart Expert :P clarify something for us Robbie Forum types? It's about the On-Line retailers, a lot of whom now ship CDs from Jersey- HMV On-Line Woolworths On-Line CD101 Amazon Jersey The ones who still ship from the UK all seem to be swapping to Jersey for tax purposes to sell them cheaper. Anyway, is it the case that Cds shipped from Jersey are not counted towards the UK charts? What about things such as first week sales figures? Don't the Jersey CDs count towards them either? Confused.
October 7, 200618 yr For all I know, anything that is shipped from Jersey sales are not counted towards the UK charts, unless they have changed the law
October 7, 200618 yr Author Yes. That's what I heard. But very few On-Line retailers now seem to ship from the UK. And more and more albums are being bought On-Line these days. Doesn't that make the UK Charts a bit of a farce?
October 7, 200618 yr Doesn't that make the UK Charts a bit of a farce? Farce is way strong. Most albums bought by UK citizens are bought in supermarkets. Supermarket sales along with some websites, most legal download sites, and almost all record stores count towards the chart. The charts are pretty accurate. All artists suffer in the same way. It's nice to believe that your favourite artist has sold 100,000 copies on Play on HMV that have not counted towards the chart - and that maybe it robbed them of a deserved #1 - but it doesn't work that way.
October 7, 200618 yr What do all the online sales count for then? If the sales from sites such as Play or HMV do not count towards the UK charts, they don't count towards any chart. .
October 7, 200618 yr the problem may be coming to an end, the Jersey government have given notice to all online stores that don't have a local connection that they will no longer be able to trade. I think it could be from as soon as November. Guernsey is still allowing it, but may follow suit. in any case the British Government are looking at closing the loophole. Theoretically, nothing shipped from the Channel Island should count, they are not part of the UK nor part of the European Union, which is what the attraction is. It is the same as buying a record from Gibraltar, no-one would expect a sale from there to count in the charts. That said, some of the online stores shipping from there do seem to be part of the panel of chart return online stores, but the OCc are very vague these days abouit which online stores count. Anycase, why not support your local retailer and buy the record from your local shop? They aren't pulling a tax fiddle and making money at the expense of the British taxpayer!
October 7, 200618 yr I read about it on the Music Week site, they are getting tougher on these sites, they even threatened to take CDWow to court, if they continued with their selling policy. So you better make the most of it now, in some supermarkets the price of albums are coming down.
October 7, 200618 yr Anycase, why not support your local retailer and buy the record from your local shop? They aren't pulling a tax fiddle and making money at the expense of the British taxpayer! but thats the main reason why alot of people buy online these days, because it is cheaper, especially compared to independent shops. many chart cds are 6.99 on bangcd etc and 9.99 comps. i dont understand why somebody buy play.com. imo, its got dearer over the past year.
October 7, 200618 yr Author I don't have a local retailer. In fact I don't even have a local shop. I have a supermarket about 12 miles away which sells a limited amount of CDs. Other than that it's a 30 mile trip to Glasgow. So I'm afraid I buy CDs on-line. And I always have tried to buy them from retailers where I know my purchase will count towards the UK Charts (of whatever artist). I've even ordered my last few albums from 'Amazon' rather than the cheaper 'Amazon Jersey' for that very reason. But other than the main Amazon Site at the moment everything else seems to come from Jersey. Which doesn't give me much choice.
