Hi Dan

I was actually really disappointed with Cool Girl from Tove Lo, loads of her tracks have been great but this was just annoying and the lyrics were kind of cringe. I can see why it was so popular but nah, just wasn't for me!

I Hate U, I Love U is a tune though, I love the back and forth between gnash and Olivia and the lyrics are just amazing with all the swearing and disses

Cool Girl and Sunshine are both great tracks from the summer - the former of which especially, was surprised to see that be such a streaming hit. It's definitely the best track from Lady Wood - on another note, what a cringey album name :puke2:

Waves is also good, I couldn't get into it enough to chart it though.

i hate u, i love u has nice at first even if the stylizing is horrendous and far too ZAYN-esque for my liking. Olivia O'Brien/olivia o'brien made a solo version of this and it's awful :heehee:

Great countdown so far, lots of faves in there I didn't mention, too

Lady Wood indeed is such an odd album title, no wonder it flopped

By Waves do you mean Wings?

I'm not a huge fan of the lack of capital letters but it's still a good song; and no capital letters is better than ALL CAPS.

Hi Dan!

'Cool Girl' is decent enough but Tove is capable of so much better so I was pretty underwhelmed with it being a lead single. And yeah, I certainly wouldn't have expected to see Gnash here! My opinion has gone back and forth on 'I Hate U I Love U' so many times which makes the title of it rather fitting

I thought it was really good from Tove, somewhat unexpected but I like it. Kinda felt the same way with Gnash towards the end of its chart run, I thought it was overstaying its welcome - but I in no way dislike the song.

Cool Girl polarising everyone here then haha, well I liked it at least.

I do like the lyrics a lot with the Gnash song, it really describes their love/hate relationship well.

Commentary

2016 was the year Flume really hit the big time then, with two huge worldwide hits although neither cracked the UK top 40 sadly. 'Never Be Like You' was the first and surprisingly even made the Billboard top 40 - impressive for an Australian dance act! It's such a well written song lyrically, you can really hear in her voice how much she wants to be accepted for who she is knowing that she's not perfect like the guy she's trying to impress supposedly is. Flume's production is really interesting too, I especially love the beat chopping that's mostly prominent at the end of the vocal lines. If we can thank anyone for the revolution of future bass, it's not either of The Chainsmokers, it's this guy. Also if this is the first Flume song you've ever heard, make sure to check out 'Insane' and 'Drop The Game' from before this year - both are amazing!!

Sunshine was great summer tune :D

Cool Girl is certainly my favourite Tove Lo song to date!

Dying for You is amazing as well! I do prefer the chorus a lot more than the verses though.

Commentary

Röyksopp were an act who I thought were well past it, and then they gave us the Robyn collaborative project in 2014 which was good and all, but then they really surprised this year with 'Never Ever' which is brilliant in just about every way, and became a sort of BuzzJack cult smash which was pleasing to see (similarly to Sundfør's cult hit 'Delirious' last year, which also made my own top 40). It's amazingly dancey, poppy and uplifting; and Sundfør sings it with such conviction, if only Röyksopp had some sort of relevance left it would be their own 'Get Lucky' moment. Okay it's not quite that amazing but it's too good to be this underrated. So glad it got an extended version too because that outro is so much better in its minute long form.

Now here's another Spinnin' Records track none of you have heard of :cheer: This comes from Bolier (NOT Boiler) and Redondo, who teamed up on last year's 'Every Single Piece' (EOY #49 2015) and return for 'Lost & Found', which is just a great deep house song really. Not much of a backstory here as it wasn't a hit single anywhere, but worth a listen if you're into this sort of thing. Bolier and Redondo will both make future appearances in the EOY although not together.

"Never Be Like You" is FANTASTIC. Love Kai's voice on it, the production really meshes well with the softer side of her voice.

I feel like "Never Ever" is gonna end up being another late debut for me as it's starting to grow on me a ton now

Hey Dan! :D Cool Girl is a great track, it's not one of Tove's best (her best for me is Talking Body) but it's a solid track anyway, I've asked for the album for Christmas so I'm hoping it's good too.

2016 really has been the year of Zara Larsson, and here she is with her first of three appearances; alongside Tinie Tempah whose best days are well behind him now but after missing the last two EOY top 100s he's back with 'Girls Like', which has a great house beat that Tinie raps effortlessly over, and there are some great catchy lyrics in there. So you can tell J.K that he's still rolling, and Russell that he's still a brand, and the UK that he can still get huge hit singles. It's really his best for ages, and that's of course helped by Zara; but more on her later. Hint, she's one of my big faves of the year.

This in the end wasn't released as a single but it's too much of a jam to resist. Rihanna, one of the sexiest women alive, singing about how sexy she is. What isn't to love? I was hoping we'd get another Pour It Up type jam from the ANTI era and this was it. And for some reason this was only a bonus track from the album.

Girls Like was a catchy tune but Zara definitely had the best parts and I love the lyrical wordplay on Tinie's track which is showcased well here with the likes of the JK Rowling line  I much preferred Not Letting Go of his more recent tracks though!

I wasn't expecting to enjoy Never Be Like You as much as I did but the vocals are fantastic and I love the chopping sound to it too, wish it was big here like it was in the US :(

:D

Girls Like is amazing :music: It did get a little boring though due to the length of time it spent in the chart

Eric Prydz came back big this year with a studio album at long last, featuring some of the big songs he's released over the past few years and some new ones too, 'Breathe' particularly was a highlight as it's something very different to what we are used to from Eric, and vocals from Rob Swire too *_* (Pendulum comeback next year plz). It's very original and really stands out in his album in a good way, I'd like to hear more of this side to him in the future.

A perfect coincidence that Fifth Harmony are #69 in the EOY :whip: but of course this is a proper banger that really made Fifth Harmony a big name, being the biggest selling girl-group song of the 2010s (stay pressed Little Mix fans, or don't cos they've sold a lot more in total lol). Must admit it was quite amusing that this and Rihanna's 'Work' were big at the same time but the repetitive chorus isn't bad at all. The lyrics aren't anything to write about it's mostly the beat that sells the song as being a total jam.

Sunshine was great summer tune :D

Cool Girl is certainly my favourite Tove Lo song to date!

Dying for You is amazing as well! I do prefer the chorus a lot more than the verses though.

Indeed, big choon of the summer

If you just count her solo singles then yes, otherwise it has to be 'Heroes' for me.

I like both parts equally tbh~

"Never Be Like You" is FANTASTIC. Love Kai's voice on it, the production really meshes well with the softer side of her voice.

I feel like "Never Ever" is gonna end up being another late debut for me as it's starting to grow on me a ton now

definitely. one of the things the Americans got right this year was letting that be a hit.

good to see 'Never Ever' growing on ü~

Hey Dan! :D Cool Girl is a great track, it's not one of Tove's best (her best for me is Talking Body) but it's a solid track anyway, I've asked for the album for Christmas so I'm hoping it's good too.
Talking Body isn't quite as great for me though I liked that too.

No, I mean the Perttu song, Waves :P
Oh ok  I always forget the song is actually called Waves rather than the singular Wave.

Hi Dan

Girls Like was a catchy tune but Zara definitely had the best parts and I love the lyrical wordplay on Tinie's track which is showcased well here with the likes of the JK Rowling line  I much preferred Not Letting Go of his more recent tracks though!

:D

Zara really shined on this song, her and Tinie work well together.

Never Be Like You should've got another push after it was a US hit, could've been big otherwise.

Girls Like is amazing :music: It did get a little boring though due to the length of time it spent in the chart

Never Ever is good as well, but I've heard better from Royksopp :(

It did spend a while in the chart but the big hits always do.

Really? It's by far their best imo!!

Breathe is quite a nice track, my favourite of his this year!
it's really a standout tune~

thanks guys~

ADORE Work from Home  will be very very high in my countdown! Girls Like is fantastic too, I'd say it's my fave Tinie track actually

Commentary

Not long after the appearances of 'Never Be Like You' and 'Cool Girl' we get Flume and Tove Lo again and together this time. What makes it ever so slightly better than NBLY is mostly Tove's vocal which is one of the best vocals she's done to date. The production is particularly brilliant too as it's still very much Flume's style, it does all the right things really - especially the epic buildup and release as it gets into the chorus. Would've loved this to be Flume's breakout hit in the UK but this didn't take off either.
