Kygo's had a bit of a quieter year in 2016, which seems funny to say as it was the year his debut album got released, but other than the singles already released that was a bit disappointing, so for me that's true. What was great though was his one big hit of the year - 'Stay'. The song follows the Kygo formula but despite that holds up well as a great tune, with its chill vibes. Let's hope Kygo comes back sometime in 2017 with another banger.

Commentary

Controversial - I think this is ever so slightly better than 'Never Forget You'. It's just written and sang so well, what an injustice that this didn't start/continue a big run of hits for MNEK (although his 'Don't Stop Me Now' cover is awful, what was he thinking there?). I love how he mashes R&B and electronic dance, it sounds so fresh. He's left a great influence on Zara Larsson too anyway as she has 2 songs to come, but both deserve big hits!!

Here's a song you probably don't know then, it was recommended to me by Spotify and I quickly fell in love with its banging house beats and a sassy female rap. The title is an abbreviation for "you can't cut these shapes better". At one point a BJSC potential I instead opted to send Mickey 'It's My Man' which is yet to come in the countdown.

Let's remember when The Chainsmokers were trying to recover from the critically panned '#selfie' and tried to get people to take them seriously. What better song to do that with than 'Roses' anyway, it's a brilliant dance hit and I'm glad it eventually crossed over to the UK after being big in the US. They've got even bigger since but I still don't think they've made anything better than this. Ironically, it peaks in my EOY at the same position '#selfie' did two years ago, but it is my favourite song of theirs now.

Commentary

Gorgon City came back this year with 'All Four Walls' which is one of the best songs they've done yet. Sadly their follow up singles weren't at all impressive and they seem to have disappeared from the charts and R1 daytime playlist since (this didn't even chart that well, peaking at #85). The vocalist from Vaults sounds great on this and the production is very Gorgon City but suitably updated for 2016. Would've been great really if Vaults were given a better song to cover for the John Lewis advert as that could've given them another hit here but it was a boring song.

I love Stay, it didn't really hit me at first but it grew rapidly, Maty's vocals complement the production really well, definitely the closest he's come to Firestone for me

Roses is good, I totally agree that it was a great song to prove their credibility after #SELFIE but I must admit, it's my least favourite of their top 40 hits this year :(

Becky Hill what a voice she has
ikr!

Say You Do is great!
indeed~ two more Sigala tracks to come tho

Hi Dan

Absolutely adore Say You Do (although not as much as Dobbo does ), it's just so joyous and was a welcome shift in sound for Sigala. I think it may be his best yet for me now, just ahead of Easy Love

:D

nah, Sweet Lovin' is by far his best imo.

I think you need to EDUCATE yourself on a bit of Mariah tbh *.* (the sample is right near the beginning)

Anyway, I love Say You Do, it's definitely my favourite Sigala track! Imani sounds fantastic and it's so uplifting.

I do love how uplifting it is, although I think Sweet Lovin' is even moreso.

Hey Dan! <3 My favourites from your top 100! (Also yasss at Starving/Hurts/Cool Me Down all being top 150, massive love for all 3 [/b]

65 Sigala - Say You Do (feat. Imani & DJ Fresh) Such a summer anthem *.* Probably my favourite from Sigala nowadays!

69 Fifth Harmony - Work From Home (feat. Ty Dolla $ign) Yassssssssssssss <3 Still so incredible

72 Tinie Tempah - Girls Like (feat. Zara Larsson) Love this also *.* Zara especially slays on this!

78 Tove Lo - Cool Girl Still so disappointing :(

93 Danny L Harle - Broken Flowers Loved this, wish this could have taken off more than it did!

I do love a good pop banger~

Sweet Lovin' is easily my favourite of his though he does a lot of great stuff.

Work From Home is an undeniable bop tbh.

I do love Zara's parts, wouldn't be the same without her.

nah I loved it.

if only Spotify and commercial radio gave it a push alongside Radio 1 tho

All Four Walls is a really great dance tune :music:

I was disappointed by Stay though, and it's rather long chart run in the Top 40 :(

yep such a great effort from Gorgon City

I was impressed by Stay's top 40 run actually, it did well for a #20 peaking hit.

I love Stay, it didn't really hit me at first but it grew rapidly, Maty's vocals complement the production really well, definitely the closest he's come to Firestone for me

Roses is good, I totally agree that it was a great song to prove their credibility after #SELFIE but I must admit, it's my least favourite of their top 40 hits this year :(

it grew likewise for me, though Firestone is still a lot better.

nah Roses is their best for me, so unique amongst the other Chainsmokers hits we've got.

thanks guys~

Hello Dan!

All Four Walls is really fantastic, it's a shame that style of dance is a bit off-trend now because I feel like Saving My Life and this would have been big hits a couple years back, the quality output from Gorgon City has stayed really high since then but the smashes aren't coming anymore :( HFY is still their best tho

I haven't minded most of MNEK's solo stuff but none of it has excited me that much (aside from NFY) and At Night has been his first proper solo track that I have really properly enjoyed. It has excellent production and is incredibly catchy too, shame he followed it up with some weird cover song?!?

yeah I had hoped All Four Walls would be a hit regardless but it really seems the public have moved on from that kind of dance. ;(

NFY and At Night were real big step ups for him, hopefully we get another banger from him this year.

Since I last popped in, really like Stay & Roses of the new batch! Don't listen to them too much out of choice but always keep them on if I hear them on radio/tv etc! <3
both are great, was nice to see both be long running top 20s.

Stay and All Four Walls two underrated dance songs of 2016 for me :( poor them should have been huge
well Stay was a big hit, poor AFW tho only making #85 :(

thanks guys~ more chart to follow shortly

Here's Zara again, and following 'Lush Life' was always going to be difficult but I think she did it really well with 'Ain't My Fault'. A very instant record, it became one of a few that debuted straight in the top ten. I just love the sassiness of the song and that great beat you can bop your head to. MNEK co-wrote and produced this and it really shows, it does sound like the spiritual follow-up to 'Never Forget You' except it's even better. Zara is just such an exciting artist at the moment and I hope her album delivers.

Commentary

This one I found off Dobbo's personal chart and I instantly loved it. Turkish DJ Mahmut Orhan (we don't get a lot of those) has his own take on deep house which I love, bringing violins and a saxophone into the mix and a hard to understand vocal (although that doesn't detract from the song). It was a huge hit across Eastern Europe but unnoticed in the UK sadly, although it got Dobbo a top 3 BJSC hit at least.

The second of eight of my own BJSC entries here (that's all of mine appearing except 'Dear Boy' and 'Gregory's Theme' which were in earlier EOYs), I was very much hooked for a good few weeks with its outstanding drop, a great example of how well future bass can be done. Although unfortunately it came second-last in the BJSC final, so that's the last time I'll send future bass..

Commentary

One of the big unexpected hits of the year, I never got this when it was sent to BJSC (as the French version titled 'Christine') but with the familiarity of the English language it really works, plus there's some cool French rapping in the middle still too. It's really well written considering English isn't her first language and I love the subtlety of the production, it has somewhat of a dancey quality which is probably why I got into it. The follow-up didn't excite me though but I hope she releases something else to remove her one-hit wonder status in my chart.

If anything I'm surprised an Otto Knows and Avicii collab wasn't an instant number one, because I was really hyped for it, but of course I still loved it. It was also the first time I really appreciated LP's vocals too, she sounds so good on this track, and it's all very uplifting. Otto really gives everything he's got for the drop too which really works. Also this is the only time Avicii appears in the top 100 due to his lack of hits this year. Hopefully he comes back hard in 2017 and gets a few more number ones in this chart! :cheer:
