And what better way to start this thing than by a proper banger of a tune. Well this is the Thermo EOY, so you should expect nothing less. This Lushington record had a long history, starting out as an unsigned track from 2015 which sampled a Joss Stone song (grab dat relevance gurl). Dance guru Cucumberella had apparently known this for ages and toyed with the idea of sending it to the Buzzjack Song Contest, and in February when I got to host the contest it was finally sent... by Vülker! He had a big history of sending great dance songs to the contest (until disappearing later this year, come back plz :() and this even pleased me more than his usual entries, and eventually finished in second place. The song itself is a huge house choon, with a sensational piano line and fabulous vocals, which were re-recorded later in the year for the song's major label release - Lushington's first! He's going places now two years after I charted 'Feel Your Touch', and it's always great to see dance artists doing things. The song also got some airplay on BBC Radio 1's 'Dance Anthems', though sadly no commercial push not that it would've been a big hit anyway. The increased exposure for the song as well as a radio edit finally being made for the song got me to chart the song all over again, not quite reaching the top 20 like it did the first time but with increased longevity, remaining top 50 to this day after nine weeks. I really want to hear what he has to offer next, because if this is anything to go by it could be another tune that I love. *sales = personal playcount on last.fm multiplied by 10,000

Carly Rae Jepsen) [EOY #99] Commentary So here's the first of three entries from Danny L Harle, or Danny Bells Harle as he is on Twitter for the festive season. Indeed he has had a huge year in my chart which ended with a collab with BuzzJack darling Carly Rae Jepsen. Something which I never expected really, I didn't think he'd be a big enough name to get her on board but wow though it really works. She brings her whispery vocals to the song, and the sentiment here feels quite similar to her own hit 'Run Away With Me'. Let's not pretend that she's the main reason this is here though, when it has Danny's lush and unique production which compliments the vocal really nicely. I guess him signing to Sony has really done great things to his music - and this is only the lowest of three songs from him in the EOY!! It would've been nice to see this become some sort of cult hit but that never really happened, some of the Carly fans even weren't overly keen on the song sadly. It all builds so well though and she sounds amazing in the final chorus, with the hard hitting beats and start-stop synths. I very much look forward to how Danny follows this one up.
December 15, 20168 yr 'also'? I never said Take Me Home was her best :P though it is very good. I slightly prefer Fast Car too but both are great. It was good to see him branch out of cover versions by the 2nd single anyway, didn't want him to become another DJ Sammy. September Song could very well be a hit single next year. Oh yeah, I didn't actually mean for it to sound like that :kink: Would've been wrong for me to assume you'd prefer a ballad over the more dance-leaning songs she's done! :heehee: I'm really quite surprised that Radio 1 didn't go for Super Natural, they played Broken Flowers over and over and over  shame really! Lots of great songs missing out on the top 100 too: 102 Alessia Cara - Wild Things (MK Remix) Not heard the remix of this but I like the original, probably my favourite of hers so far! 104 Lukas Graham - 7 Years Still surprised you actually like this tbh, sounds like something you'd hate! No complaints though, was great seeing it blow up. 106 Years & Years - Desire (feat. Tove Lo) 107 Hailee Steinfeld & Grey - Starving (feat. Zedd) 108 Sia - Cheap Thrills (feat. Popcaan) [EOY #98] Commentary Who thought AlunaGeorge were going to have such a good second era then? I certainly didn't, as I wasn't huge on them previously. Then the 'I Remember' era happened - bringing four big hits, three of which appear in the EOY top 100. The first single 'I'm In Control' is the lowest of the three, and it was also a minor UK chart hit eventually making the top 40. Sadly none of their follow up singles did anything and the album bombed, but I hope we see more of them despite that. It's not like they depend on chart success anyway but it's disappointing that they're this underrated. The song itself is a brilliant dancehall inspired dance-pop hit, which seemed to be somewhat of a trend this year thanks to Drake (his own take on it 'One Dance' appears high up in the EOY). Aluna wants you to know that SHE is in charge of the relationship, which I love. The rhythm and the drop are amazing too, and if that wasn't good enough we also have a guest verse from Popcaan *_* If he keeps doing guest verses like these he could well be the next Sean Paul (who am I kidding though, Sean Paul is irreplaceable as an icon of urban music). The one thing that lets this down is that 'Mean What I Mean' sounds similar but does this whole thing even better, so I come back to that one more.

Halsey) [EOY #97] Commentary 2016 in EDM was really the year of The Chainsmokers. Spending over 10 weeks at #1 in the US Billboard Hot 100, and being a huge hit just about everywhere in the world - 'Closer' was inescapable this year and one of the year's defining hits whether you liked it or not. I thought it was great though, even if I didn't stan it to the extent that the world in general seemed to. There's many legit criticisms of it but at the end of the day it's a fun catchy pop song and sometimes that's all you need to make me like it. It really works from being a male/female duet too, I do like it when songs tell both sides of the story. It doesn't deny that it's just a song about hooking up with your ex for one night and doesn't try to be anything else, and that synth in the drop is great in its own odd way. Overall, an undeniable jam (but please Chainsmokers, don't spend the rest of your career trying to re-create this one hit - 'All We Know' and 'Setting Fires' just aren't that great! (AWK particularly is almost laughable in how much it rips off 'Closer')).

It really was quite disappointing that what was meant to be her big comeback miss the Top 20, and her album losing out the #1 to Olly Murs was quite the surprise too. Of course, as great as the original was, it is the Offaiah remix that I liked even more. Emeli's beast of a voice just works so well in dance, and Offaiah keeps all the good bits of the original production too, with the choir and strings adding extra layers to it. We don't get to hear the verses in this version but that doesn't really matter when the chorus works so well as a looped vocal sample under Offaiah's production. Offaiah himself will appear higher up in the countdown with 'Trouble', and it does help that the 'Hurts' remix is very much in the same style, and with it only being the second song we've heard from him it still feels very unique. I just love the way the song builds too, it's quite long at seven minutes but it's a great listen. Well worth the wait when you finally get to the full-out choir bit about five minutes in. Amazing drop too, gets my head bopping every time :music:
December 16, 20168 yr Hi Dan Oh no, didn't realised that you didn't like All We Know. It is a bit of a rip off but for me, I definitely prefer it to Closer, it's less in-your-face and feels much more chilled and laidback, a shame it never caught on in the charts. Closer is a fun track but the Halsey parts are definitely the best thing about it. I'm In Control was my favourite of the Aluna singles this era, I love the other two still yet to come in your countdown but yeah, it had a really nice vibe, wish it was a bigger UK hit! :D

I do love the slap bass and disco feel to it, it's not something we get often in dance songs. I wasn't really expecting this to be in the top 100 anyway as it kinda peaked at the start of 2016 and fell off quickly, so I don't have much to say about it. Do have a listen though if this is your kinda thing.

Stefflon Don) [EOY #94] Commentary One of the last people I'd have expected to make a 'comeback' this year was Mason, yes the same Mason of 'Exceeder' fame. This one didn't get actual chart success but it had over a million plays on Spotify, indeed I discovered it from one of Spotify's curated dance playlists. At 2:29 it is the shortest song in the Top 100 but its song length works to its advantage as it wastes no time building up. It also features female rapper Stefflon Don who really adds a lot to it, the hook "they say fashion kills, it's a murder scene... make that cash!" is brilliant, and the sample of Jacksons' 'ABC' is very effective too, its used in a way you wouldn't expect (and indeed it's so prevalent the song is subtitled 'papapapa'). Seriously check this one out.

No complaints though, was great seeing it blow up. dance songs are always better! :kink: I think Broken Flowers not charting probably led R1 to not support any of his follow-ups, shame indeed. The remix isn't a lot different from the original, except it has a house beat. Sometimes that's enough to get me on board. 7 Years was interesting enough to stand out for me really, it's usually the generic love ballads that go nowhere that I dislike (current example being Say You Won't Let Go that really needs to do one in the chart) Hi Dan Oh no, didn't realised that you didn't like All We Know. As you've noticed yes this previously was in my EOY of 2014 where it was at #33, but the song is so good that it charted all over again for me. Of course that is helped by it being a re-recorded version, which got a bit of getting used to but it eventually made my top 10. I still think the original is the better version but I love both. It's just a lush housey banger but so unlike any others, I really admire Danny L Harle's production in general and it especially shines in this song.

Tinashe) [EOY #92] Commentary Towards the back end of 2015 we saw the debut of KDA, with the big jam that was 'Turn The Music Louder' which did brilliantly in the UK chart. I presumed from there that he'd go the way of Secondcity, Route 94 and David Zowie and have no further hits. Whilst I was right what I didn't expect was that the follow-up would be even better, but that's what 'Just Say' is. Indeed it peaked lower in my personal chart, only just making the top 20, but had much better sales and longevity. It's also the first of two songs for Tinashe in my EOY, she's had a great year as a featured artist. This is the kinda song that creeps up on you, building so effortlessly. It doesn't have any sort of big drop moment that so many songs seem to rely on, but this one doesn't need it. All it takes is a slight change in the chord progression and you know you're in the chorus. Tinashe's vocal, well she may as well be faceless on this song because I wouldn't have recognised it as being Tinashe if she wasn't credited, but it's great.

Whilst he's mostly a house artist he turned to future bass for this release and it really works. If you're not a fan of vocal chopping then this one's for you, there's none of that here. It's also got a really melodic drop which is refreshing, plus good vocals and lyrics. Gryffin himself says the song is a big step for him as an artist and songwriter, so hopefully we get more of this next year!

December 18, 20168 yr Hi Dan I enjoyed Just Say a little but I would have much preferred a banger in the same vein as that but it was still enjoyable. I would have liked more of Tinashe's swagger too because as you say, you can't even tell it's her. Broken Flowers is a great track so I'm glad it was re-released and at least heard by more people due its radio playlisting. I wish it could've been a big hit though, it would have been nice to have something different in the charts and the production is gorgeous. :D

It just works so well; the slow electronic beat, the atmosphere, the breakdown and the vocals. Dakota) [EOY #89] 2016 36 Long Hot Summer [EOY #247] Commentary Jonas Blue's breakthrough hit now which was of course his Tracey Chapman cover. It's also the first of two Fast Cars in the Top 100, and it did suffer a little from being the not-as-good version - though it easily makes the Top 100 regardless. I really like what he's done with it anyway, it's a refreshing take on the classic in my opinion even if quite a few on BuzzJack think otherwise. The instrumental part is brilliant, I love the little switch ups in the melody. I also admire Dakota for not trying to belt it out, her calm voice is oddly appealing. This is the last we'll see of Jonas this year but 'By Your Side' is starting to gain in my chart so we may well see that in next year's EOY, it's great seeing another dance producer get hit after hit anyway as most of them just become one hit wonders.
December 19, 20168 yr Cappa - No Scrubs was a immense tune  The last said about how I feel about Fast Car the better :kink: Edited December 19, 20168 yr by Santas Haz
