Sound of the Underground was recorded in 2001 by Orchid! The year before that was Robbie's Frank Sinatra cover, so the last original Christmas #1 was in 2000.

Which was, erm...

EDIT: Actually, if you want to be really picky, 'Can We Fix It' was a remixed and extended version of a pre-existing television theme tune first heard two years earlier. Westlife a year before charted with a double A-side of covers, so we're back to 1998 and 'Goodbye' by the Spice Girls as the last truly original Christmas #1.

Bob is a funnier answer though.

Killing In The Name is an original song though!
Well this is it although a song already released in 1992
Obviously, BA Robertson's finest moment is 'Carrie' by Cliff Richard.

His solo stuff is mostly as bad as 'The Living Years' though.

Heh heh, not 'We Have a Dream' by the 1982 Scotland World Cup squad? I actually really like 'Bang Bang' but my wife hates it.

Shayne Ward's 'That's My Goal' (2005) was original too.

As was Wherever You Are wasn't it? I get the discussion though I can't see a normal #1 for a very long time unless as was mentioned a huge artist released their comeback single on Xmas week but that in itself seems too far fetched a prospect.

Orchid never released their version of SOTU so I'd say it actually was an original Christmas #1!

Can James Cordon stay as far away from the Christmas #1 as possible please? :)
So to clarify Too Much in 1998 was the last truly original Christmas Number 1 that was not either from X Factor, a choir or already years old.

From what I heard that was a Westlife track that was rejected

I doubt he'll reach top 40 , let alone #1, luckily.

No, 'Goodbye'. 'Too Much' was in 1997.

Is "not a choir" really a thing though?

I think 'charity collective' would be a better term, in which case there've been quite a few; Band Aid (2004), Military Wives (2011), Justice Collective (2012), NHS Choir (2015)

But it is original, many hit songs get rejected by other artists but that doesn't mean it's a cover by the time it's released :kink:

I only count Military Wives and the NHS Choir as choirs.

And was never released... So many songs are recorded by other people first. Doesn't mean they are covers when they're finally released.

I put a bet on Clean Bandit when they were at 66/1 and just cashed it out now they got slashed to 9/1 and made a bit of money. Yay. (I'm not repeating what happened with Bieber last year lol)
The last original Christmas song was Cliff Richard's Saviour's Day, back in 1990.

Kylie Minogue is planning a top 40 assault with her new tune 'At Christmas'

doubt it will be a contender for number 1 but hopefully her 50th top 40

She has it Record of the Week on BBC Radio 2, performing it on Jonathan Ross on 10th December (recorded yesterday) and rumoured X-factor final on 11th....
