Hymn for the Weekend second worst song of 2016? Are you kidding me? That song is magnificent!

I do agree on Black Beatles, Panda, Sex and The Mack though, all four are diabolical.

  • Author

Time to do all my replies then I'll post some highlights of 2016 which haven't made my top 200!

Thanks for all the comments

You won't like my EOY chart then :(

I do agree with the Drake tracks though, I'm not sure why they ever became so popular

Glad you hate Drake at least!

Damn it UV you were doing so well

It's gonna get better!

49. Needed Me [5.5] I would give Work a "5.0". (Fun Fact: I actually have a CD copy of Good Girl Gone Bad)

48. i hate u i love u [4.0] Might be one of my least favourite songs of 2016, despite this not getting such a low score.

47. Their 2nd single was "Let Me Hold You" [6.0] (Wait! Did they just rework that Kevin Lyttle jam from 2003?! Better than Sex)

45. Pop Style [6.0] Haven't heard the Views album, but I have heard this a couple of times on some Billboard Hot 100 videos. BTW, It seems that rap songs have been using a lot of Frank Dukes samples lately (including this song, and Drake sampled another song by the same artist in "0 to 100 - The Catch Up" and Kendrick also sampled a Dukes song in "untitled 07")

43. Give It Up [xx] LMAO at "He should have taken that advice". Not interested in Nathan

42. Make My Love Go [5.0] I liked Dance With You, Eyes On You, and Down is quite a jam. The moment I heard this song, I already knew the lyrics reference to Maxi Priest - Close To You in the chorus, because I heard the Maxi original in a 100 Hits 90's Anthems comp.

39. Dessert [4.5] (I thought the song title said "Desert" (as in "Desert Island") when I first saw it on a playlist)

38. I Found A Girl [xx] Vamps are not really my cup of tea. (Speaking of OMI, the Felix Jaehn remix of Cheerleader is a guilty pleasure for me)

34. Closer [6.5] (I liked Selfie [guilty pleasure], Roses, and Don't Let Me Down. I find this okay and All We Know is a "meh" for me.)

33. Starboy [9.0] (This and False Alarm are my favourites from his new album. The latter had such a badass action-packed music video)

32. Fake Love [6.0] (I saw this pop up on a Best + Worst Tracks Of The Week video by TheNeedleDrop. TND described it as a "boring Hotline Bling")

30. Company [??] (Bieber's not my cup of tea, but I did like What Do You Mean and Sorry. this and Love Yourself are "meh" for me.)

27. Love Me [7.5] (Didn't I see this popup in the 2015 hatechart?. "i like it when you sleep..." album [nominated for the Mercury Prize (losing to Skepta's Konnichiwa), Number one on NME's Best 2016 Albums List, even Q Mag praised this. Kinda overrated, though I would give the album "7.5"])

26. Meteorite [7.0] (Didn't like it as much as the majority of Communion [which I have a CD copy of], but I still like it)

25. Sucker For Pain [7.0] (Like this, but if I had to choose a favourite from what I've heard from the Suicide Squad soundtrack, it would probably have to be Purple Lamborghini by a small margin)

23. Posner Ibiza [8.0] (This and Cooler Than Me, I like)

21. Up&Up [8.5] (I actually own Head Full Of Dreams on CD, along with the rest of their albums [except for Mylo Xyloto and Ghost Stories, I have yet to get those]. The music video is one of my favourites of 2016 [i like the part where the skydivers dive into a boul of soup  ], but the best music video of 2016 imo would have to be Radiohead's Burn The Witch or David Bowie's Lazarus [probably the latter])

17. The Mack [7.0] (Liking this, though it will never top the 1996 original)

16. Sex [4.5] (There's something that turns me off about this song. [1991 Salt-N-Pepa original>Cheat Codes], despite me not liking it as much as Push It and Whatta Man)

15. 24k Magic [8.5] (He's a dangerous man with some money in his pocket)

14. Love Me Now [5.5] (I used to know him as the guy who collaborated with Kanye and Common long before he did that 2014 hit song)

13. Lock Doh [6.0] (I have liked quite a lot of rap albums this year. Skepta's Konnichiwa, Kano's Made In The Manor, Kendrick Lamar's untitled unmastered compilation, Danny Brown's Atrocity Exhibition, Tribe Called Quest's excellent comeback album We Got It From Here Thank You 4 Your Service, and De La Soul's and the Anonymous Nobody. Have let to listen to Landlord but I might want to)

11. Famous [Kanye] [4.0] (Didn't really like the "Kanye claims he made Taylor Swift famous in the 2009 VMA's" references in this song. I like quite a lot of his songs like "Gold Digger", "Through The Wire", and "Touch The Sky", but this one... no. I do quite like Fade though.)

10. Panda [5.0] (Used to like it when they played it at my school's gym, but I kinda grew out of it)

9. If I Were Sorry [??] (Don't know this very well. My favourites from Eurovision are 1944 [the lyrics were great and the beat reminds me of Four Tet a bit], You Are The Only One [i was amazed by the way Serjey was flying through the night sky in his performance], Heartbeats and Walk On Water)

8. Give Me Your Love [8.0] (Sigala's best would have to be Easy Love.)

25. Heathens>>>>>>>>>>>the rest for me7. Controlla [6.5] (I like the synths and the electronic drums of this)

6. The Sound [8.5] (I actually bought iliwysfyasbysuoi (had to put it initials cause the album's title is so long) from a charity shop. Haven't seen the video except for the part where it said something about hating Chocolate. BTW, what was that song with the "giggling girls while watching their friend do stuff" music video. Haven't seen it.)

5. Black Beatles [somewhere between 5.5 and 6.0] (So this is the Mannequin Challenge song)

4. One Dance [6.5] (though I was quite annoyed by it's long run on the top, due to the streaming thing. It was so close to beating Bryan Adams' consecutive number one record [16 consecutive weeks at Number 1], and didn't match Frankie Laine's I Believe record [18 non-consecutive weeks at Number 1])

3. Dancing On My Own [5.0] (Meh! Robyn did it better!)

2. Hymn For The Weekend [9.0] (I actually like this one, but my favourites by them would have to be Paradise, Viva La Vida, Yellow, Clocks, and Adventure Of A Lifetime)

49. Also have a CD copy of GGGB!

39. Same!

34. DLMD>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>All We Know>Roses>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Closer

32. It literally is a boring Hotline Bling!

27. It probably did oops :kink: Forgot it wasn't released in 2016!

12.Same!

9. 1944 & Walk On Water  The latter might make my top 200!

8. Sweet Lovin or Say You do for me!

6. I'll reveal it when I do my video chart probs!

2. Yellow/Paradise/Princess Of China are the only 3 Coldplay tracks that I can tolerate

So many great tunes in your hate chart :(

One that I certainly agree with though is Hymn For The Weekend. That could possibly be the most boring song I've heard all year. Didn't help that it stayed in the chart for an absolute age as well.

Yassssssss Hymn hate *.* So so echo all of that comment!!

If we ignore the Drake appearances :kink: that's not too bad a hate chart. 7 Years I don't mind tho although it did get far too overplayed. Hymn For The Weekend is indeed overrated but it's a lot better than Adventure Of A Lifetime at least! Dancing On My Own I don't hate but it certainly stuck around far too long.

Good to see If I Were Sorry, 24K Magic, The Mack, Sucker For Pain & Get Ugly high - dislike all of those!

Some of the comments

I think Hymn is worse than AOAL but tbh both are utterly horrendous and there isn't much difference between them for me! Glad you hate quite a lot there!

If I Were Sorry featuring

Your top 2 in the hatechart are amazing though :nono:

No.

and

No. x

Thanks for all these comments also! <3

Yassss Sam. You summed up a lot of my thoughts about Hymn For The Weekend. Extremely overrated. I don't hate it but it's really not as great as everyone makes out & both artists have done way better.

Yassss more Hymn dislike *.*

Thank god someone else hates 24k Magic, it's horrific :( I also of course approve of Callum taking a battering, horrendous cover of a brilliant song as you said! I can't stand when covers strip away everything that makes a song good in the first place.

7 Years would probably take the biscuit for me too though if not Calum Scott. His vocals are painful and it's just so plodding, it's like the textbook way to make a shit radio fodder chart hit :drama:

Knew you'd hate lots here  They really are all so utterly dreadful!

didn't realise you were such a fan of Perfect Illusion, I imagine your actual EOY will look quite different though but hopefully Starving, Don't Let Me Down, Final Song and Work From Home retain their top 10 positions.

Neither did I tbh! :kink: I think its kind of clicked with me in the last 2 weeks or so just how much I love it! Not spoiling too much but one of those four songs you've mentioned, its gonna be touch & go to whether they make the top 10!!

My opinion ratings for the songs I've heard from the Spotify Top 100

01. Lady Gaga- Perfect Illusion [7.5]

02. Mø- Final Song [8.5] (Those syncopated drums in the chorus. Did I mention these before?)

05. Fifth Harmony ft. Ty Dolla Sign- Work From Home [4.5]

09. The Chainsmokers ft. Daya- Don't Let Me Down [9.0]

10. Hailee Steinfeld & Grey ft. Zedd- Starving [5.5]

11. Emeli Sande- Hurts [9.0]

12. Meghan Trainor- No [5.5]

13. Dua Lipa- Blow Your Mind (Mwah) [7.5]

14. Anne-Marie- Alarm [8.0]

17. Fifth Harmony- That's My Girl [??]

19. Alan Walker- Faded [9.0]

21. Ariana Grande- Into You [??]

23. Zara Larsson- Lush Life [9.0] (such a jam. "I live my day as if it was the last. Live my day as if it were the past. Doin' it all night, all summer, Doin' it the way I wanna [whistles] ")

24. P!nk- Just Like Fire [8.5]

37. Dua Lipa- Hotter Than Hell [7.5]

39. Birdy- Wild Horses [8.5]

42. Snow Patrol- Chasing Cars [10.0]

43. Ellie Goulding- Still Falling For You [6.0]

44. Martin Solveig ft. Tkay Maidza- Do It Right [7.5]

48. David Guetta ft. Zara Larsson- This One's For You [8.0]

51. Birdy- Keeping Your Head Up [8.5] (Looking back on the 2 Birdy songs. I feel bad for charting them at 75 [KYHU] and 76 [Wild Horses], because they're great. BTW, Have you heard the original Skinny Love from 2007 [done by Bon Iver])

52. Ward Thomas- Guilty Flowers [8.0] (Sounds quite good, I might want to listen to the album Cartwheels someday)

53. Dami Im- Sound Of Silence [8.0] (Hello darkness, my old friend! :P )

54. Little Mix ft. Sean Paul- Hair [5.0]

58. Nick Jonas ft. Tove Lo- Close [5.0] (I saw a dank meme with this song in it, and when they say "clooosee" and/or "oohhhh", it is replaced with a clip of a news reporter yelling while being scared of an insect flying towards him)

59. NEIKED ft. Dyo- Sexual [5.0]

61. Katy Perry- Rise [5.5]

64 Selena Gomez- Hands To Myself [5.0]

65. Charlie Puth ft. Selena Gomez- We Don't Talk Anymore [4.5]

82. Ace Wilder- Busy Doin Nothin

83. Charli XCX ft. Lil Yachty- After The Afterparty [5.0]

85. Sia- Unstoppable [7.5]

87. Iggy Azalea- Team [5.5]

89. Olly Murs- You Don't Know Love [7.0]

92. Mø- Drum [8.0]

93. Shawn Mendes ft. Camilla Cabello- I Know What You Did Last Summer [5.0]

94. Snakehips ft. Tinashe & Chance The Rapper- All My Friends [6.5]

96. Clean Bandit ft. Louisa Johnson- Tears [8.0]

97. Kygo ft. Foxes- Oasis [7.0]

100. Shawn Mendes- Stitches [6.0]

Thanks Dalek for all the ratings!

Have heard the original Skinny Love and it is good, but I much prefer the Birdy version! & I'd definitely recommend checking out Cartwheels, one of my favourite albums of the year! <3

Hi Uv

I'm not too fussed on 7 Years anymore so not too bothered about seeing it at #1, I actually really liked it for about 2 weeks but it got old SO quickly and in the end just far too overplayed, don't go back to it at all anymore.

I pretty much like everything else in your top 10 though apart from Controlla, that did just get infuriating when it was in the section for so long and wasn't going. It's so forgettable, the only bit I know is 'like controlla'

Oops at you not hating much of it! Hopefully you'll like most of my EOY! <3

Hailee and The Chainsmokers making it into the top 10 of your spotify 100 though  and all the yaaas for lane boy being a future hit ^_^ but why so much hate for the 1975 :(

Glad your loving some stuff here! Just never got The 1975, they really infuriate me for some reason & I find their songs so annoying!

Don't Worry slaying Spotify <3 What a tune, can't wait to see what she brings to Melfest this year *.*

I am so hyped! Hope it'll slay as much as Busy Doin Nothin/Don't Worry <3

Wow, Mollie's pretty high in that! :o Wonder if that might underperform? It didn't hold up very well for me anyway :(

Yeah I was a bit shocked Mollie was that high but I did spam her to death in August/September (and then listened to it like twice after that :kink:). I'll say now that it has overperformed or underperformed (so its not come where I'd rank it about pretty much)!

Tbh that top 10 Spotify is so good yasss gaga slaying it

Hymn for the Weekend second worst song of 2016? Are you kidding me? That song is magnificent!

I do agree on Black Beatles, Panda, Sex and The Mack though, all four are diabolical.

Hymn is horrendous! Glad you hate some stuff though!

2016: Good Songs That Haven't Made The Top 200:
* Some songs that I adore are currently outside the top 200 but could get boosted into the top 200 with this weeks 2016 songs effect in my personal chart! So we'll probs have another section of this before I kick off my top 200!

All Saints- One Woman Man

Thanks Joseph!

Boy is definitely my 2nd fave of her solo tracks also! It actually looked like it was gonna become a big hit in my charts at the end of 2015 but it just kinda faltered in my chart in the end at the start of the year!

Yeah agree with you on the Grace tracks! The screech is literally the only reason Grace made this list!! And her album..... that's a strong contender for worst album of 2016

Zayn has really surprised me this year tbh!

Lane Boy is really strong, may be my favourite 21Pilots track! It's been played on plug very often!

Hey Sam :)

Of your chart-toppers we only have one in common, the Fab Emeli Hurts, so obv thats my fave of your list

Of the 2017 potentials, Noah Cyrus is riding high in my charts so you must go for that one, and Alan Walker, too I'm also charting.

Of the hates, oops not a Coldplay fan I see (I am, sorry!) Some of the others, like 7 Years, got a bit overplayed but I essentially still like them a lot, though I find myself agreeing with a lot of your comments re Drake, Black Beatles, generic dance and stuff. :o

Of the new stuff, All Saints is OK, Betsy fab, Grace is magnificent, and Heathens is my fave of the Twenty One Pilots batch!

cheers!

Look forward to the big rundown and Emeli being on top... :heehee:

Yasss at Emeli topping your chart *.*

Noah's kind of been and gone now for me I think unless it takes off officially! I'm a bit bored of it now :( Alan will probs start to take off though!

Glad you agree with most of my hatechart! <3

Heathens is my fave as well!

Love Broken Flowers, my favourite Danny L Harle track by quite a stretch!

Thanks Pete!

Same! Way better than Supernatural!

Wow at Little Mix :o Well deserved though! They had six entries in my top 250, the joint 2nd most, behind the seven that All Saints had!

Thanks Joseph!

Yeah they have completely slayed here this year! 5 from Glory Days & 4 from Get Weird! All Saints will only be popping up once here :( About 4 or 5 of the songs are probs in my top 200 of the year! At least they slayed your EOY!

191. Ira Losco- Walk On Water 153,680 | 17-8-38-X

192. Tegan & Sara- U-Turn 151,000 | 36-19-23-25-35-X

193. Nina Nesbitt- Take You To Heaven 150,800 | 14-23-24-34-49-X

194. Lady Gaga- A-Yo 149,860 | 45-10-29-49-X

195. Liv Dawson- Still 149,500 | 22-13-13-38-X

196. Andra Day- Rise Up 149,460 | 8-32-X

197. Demi Lovato- Stone Cold 148,590 | 29-17-18-29-39-X

198. Paulina Rubio ft. Morat- Mi Nuevo Vicio 147,390 | 5-48-X

199. Emeli Sande- Breathing Underwater 147,220 | 24-21-27-37-X

200. Gwen Stefani- Make Me Like You 147,150 | 7-14-24-48-X

Make Me Like You: Gwen kicks off the top 200 with a bit of a pop jam that hit top 10 but got old quickly & plummeted down the charts, doubling its position every week! At least it isn't the lowest top 10 hit! (That'd go to Private Show, with the likes of Midnight Mouths/Clumsy/If Love Was A Crime & a few others missing the top 200!

Breathing Underwater: This is really nice, pretty much typical Emeli. The song looked like it may contend for top 10 at one week but in the end missed the top 20 & didn't really do that great. At least it sold ok. This is the first of 2 entries we'll be seeing from Emeli, and it's gonna be a bloody long time till the 2nd one pops up! How far can it go?

Mi Nuevo Vicio: First Ultraviolenceland BJSC entry of 2016 pops up here! I think only Lucy (121k) & Fletcher (<50k) missed the top 100! Also expect to see a few BJSC entries from the likes of Hushkanukia, Pupok & Ramrynia pop up later! Anyhoo back to Mi Nuevo Vicio, this was our first of two DNQ's this year & I seem to be the only person who loves this! Such a Spanish anthem and I still go back to it often & its such a great jam *.* Would be higher than this for me based on personal taste & made my top 100 Spotify of the year chart! This started strong with a top 5 debut, but then plummeted immediately as it DNQ'ed the next week!

Stone Cold: And our 2nd non-top 10 hit comes from Demi Lovato's only post-album single from Confident, 'Stone Cold'. Stone Cold is really nice & peaked at #17 in my chart but it isn't really anything but nice so fell pretty quickly. Only entry from Demi this year (Body Say flopped & don't mention I Will Survive) after the 2 pre-album singles from Confident launched into unlucky #41 & #43 in last year's EOY!

Rise Up: Into 196th we have one of the most recent tracks to hit my chart! Andra Day's stunning ballad Rise Up which only spent two weeks top 50 & had a massive 2nd week drop! However the song has recorded 4 weeks worth of sales & in the higher Christmas selling period, its enough to see it chart! I've adored Rise Up for a few months now but it was one of those songs that was never going to chart, until I listened to my 2016 playlist & realised how much I loved it, enough to see it go top 10!

Still: 2nd Ultraviolenceland BJSC Entry to pop-up! Still sold pretty good and spent 2 weeks just outside the top 10 at #13, but like most BJSC entries it plummeted as soon as the contest finished! Not anywhere near my favourite of my entries but I do really like it!

A-Yo: And nearly top 5 hit A-Yo ends up at 194 on the EOY! The song was set to have a massive jump but a busy week meant it ended up just sneaking a top 10 placing at #10 and fell pretty quickly due to tough competition! First of 5 entries for Gaga & this is such a fun country-album track bop!

Take You To Heaven: First of two songs from Nina, Take You To Heaven debuted & peaked at #14 & had a solid chart run! Really love this song & it's held up well for me this year after its use in the 'Scream' TV series reminded me of how much I liked this! First song to pass 150k this year!

U-Turn: First of two Tegan & Sara entries also! First instant-grat U-Turn was a nice little pop song, peaked at #19 & held around my charts for a few weeks! Really got into them this year & this was one of the songs that got me into them!

Walk On Water: After Eurovision had a limited impact last year, this year its out in full force as Ira is the first of many Eurovision (Dami, Douwe, Queen Laura) & Melodifestivalen/National Finals (Ace Wilder (x2), Margaret) to appear in my EOY this year! Walk On Water was actually my original favourite pre-contest but my unexpectedly falling in love with Douwe, Dami's performance & Laura's iconicness means she's now 4th in that! Anyway Ira hit top 10 but fell very quickly! Bit of a jam though!
