December 14, 20169 yr Louisa's single was probably the worst there had been since Leon Jackson, and also she wasn't actually that popular. She was sort of a default winner because the producers had nuked all her competition. Ben was really popular with the viewers and had a great song, which got a lot of radio support IIRC.
December 14, 20169 yr Firstly, singles sales had shrunk by about 20% in between those two releases. Secondly, Ben's song was uplifting and suited his style and voice. Louisa's failed on all those counts, so people just weren't interested. Plus, X Factor 2015 was considered a mess by its fans for a number of reasons (myself included), and the interest in the show rapidly shrunk. Coupled with an underwhelming winners single which people just didn't like. Matt Terry deserves to at least do better than that. IMO anyway.

Yeah but what I'm surprised about is that Louisa's flop wasn't just a blip, but the fact that this seems to be the new normal. Sure Matt will peak higher first week out but it's barely going to sell more than Louisa did. I'd chalked up a lot of Forever Young's failure to it being a dire song, but Matt's is pretty decent by all accounts so I thought it could at least score an 80k-100k opening sale.

Yeah I see what you mean. I think other things to bear in mind - it gets two less chart days than before, the TV ratings have gone down, no CD single, the song only got performed once at the final instead of 2 or 3 times, and people are less likely to buy a talent show's single for the sake of it like they used to do back in the day.

How can you call Louisa unpopular? She had like 58% of the vote!
December 14, 20169 yr Louisa's single was probably the worst there had been since Leon Jackson, and also she wasn't actually that popular. She was sort of a default winner because the producers had nuked all her competition. Louisa was the favourite to win that year, when she auditioned I just knew she would be one of the final 12. It all boils down to the song choice in the end, it was awful, it didn't really connect, hence low sales.
December 14, 20169 yr How can you call Louisa unpopular? She had like 58% of the vote! Yeah I wouldn't call Louisa unpopular but the show was heavily manipulated in her favour last year. But at the end of the day, if the audience didn't like her, she wouldn't have won. Look at Gifty this year... she was over hyped in the early weeks but the voting stats reveal she never won the audience over.
December 14, 20169 yr Louisa did manage to get 2 top 20 singles so it can't have been all bad. But yes, I think the general consensus is that last year's winners single was poor and that showed in the sales. It would be nice for Matt to at least get the number 1 this week, but it's not looking likely. I'm sure we'll get some Christmas #1-specific releases next week.
December 14, 20169 yr Yeah but my point was that the initial impact of the show's winners singles has suddenly evaporated after being reliably consistently huge for a decade. Because XF is a dead duck now - but Cowell is in denial.
December 14, 20169 yr Hope "Oops" can scrape top 40 even though it's not an official single. Seeing as it's becoming popular, they should make it the third single from Glory Days

December 14, 20169 yr Looks like Clean Bandit will hold onto no1 position for a 6th week which is great news. Matt Terry and Louis songs are pretty awful.
