December 25, 20177 yr Author We've gotta let go of all of our ghosts... 43.) Adele - "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)" 3rd Single, 25 Points: 12286 Chart Run: 46-38-30-27-21-17-18-14-12-11-11-9-8-10-13-18-23-31-37-43-49 (14 weeks) fk4BbF7B29w I don't know why, but I find Adele's vocals here very playful, almost like Rihanna's in the sense that she changes her tone sporadically and it gives the song an addiction factor. Like most Adele songs of previous eras, this one is a giant middle finger to insert ex's name here, which also serves as a contradiction to the more reminiscent "When We Were Young" or the remorseful and melancholy "Hello". I mean, pining on about how it's your fault and then saying "no you did this to me, you ruined me, it's all your fault" - that's some Taylor Swift shit right there. Adele pulled it off though and it helped her recover from WWWY somehow underperforming.
December 25, 20177 yr There are a lot of songs that I enjoy on your Year-End List of 2016 Cody! From 51-100 there are almost all songs that I like (except for "Me Too", that song is crap in my opinion) As for your Top 50, I like them all, especially "Starboy" and "Lush Life"!
December 25, 20177 yr Author And it seems that love makes the world feel good... 42.) Zedd f/Aloe Blacc - "Candyman" Non-album Single Points: 12430 Chart Run: 2-3-4-4-4-7-10-15-17-24-30-39 (12 weeks) QCylGd7VF9U And this is when I realized Zedd created a monster. After the likes of his True Colors album, I was eager to see what he does next. Then news broke out that he was doing something for the 75th anniversary of M&M's. He teams up with newfound proteges Grey, grabs Aloe Blacc in for vocals, and the result him venturing into a genre no one expected him to do: future bass. It's a really fun and sweet song, and the use of the Candy Man sample (from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory) was genius. Why wasn't this used for a milestone anniversary for Nerds or something like that? The Wonka allusion would have made much more sense.
December 25, 20177 yr Author You don't have to change a thing, the world could change its heart... 41.) Alessia Cara - "Scars To Your Beautiful" 3rd Single, Know-It-All Points: 12462 Chart Run: 49-45-36-34-32-25-20-13-9-7-7-4-3-5-8-... (15 weeks) MWASeaYuHZo So "Wild Things" flopped because it took too long to grow on me and I was eagerly awaiting for the next Alessia single. In comes this self-love anthem that instantly grabs me. The theme isn't really anything groundbreaking (I'd say my threshold on what I consider "groundbreaking themes" would be something like Guys My Age), but it has a nice flow and kept me interested. America seemed to agree with me and they sent this to the top of radio. 40 more songs to go!
December 25, 20177 yr Author Lightning strikes every time she moves... 40.) Calvin Harris f/Rihanna - "This Is What You Came For" Non-album Single Points: 12704 Chart Run: 8-2-3-5-7-8-10-12-14-18-23-27-31-37-45 (15 weeks) kOkQ4T5WO9E The production isn't really standard Calvin (although it kinda reminds me of "I Will Never Let You Down" at parts) but like most of his discography, it managed to grab me in a positive way and I saw it for the fun track that it was. Rihanna sounds amazing like always and I liked the manipulation of her ad libs to create the chorus. This might be Calvin's last megasmash for quite a while now that he's one of Taylor's exes.
December 25, 20177 yr Scars To Your Beautiful deserved so much more, peaked at #8 in both Australia & the US charts yet flopped at #55 in the UK :(
December 25, 20177 yr Author I feel you coursing through my blood... 39.) Coldplay f/Beyoncé - "Hymn For The Weekend" 2nd Single, A Head Full Of Dreams Points: 12851 Chart Run: 47-37-34-25-22-16-14-16-13-14-9-8-11-11-13-14-17-21-25-32-42 (21 weeks) YykjpeuMNEk Leave it to Coldplay to create some really colorful yet deep songs. Some of the lyrics remind me of Fiddler On The Roof (probably the "life's a drink" part). It's a feel-good track about pining for a girl that sends your heart racing like you took a few pills of ecstasy, but that's okay because you're young and at a young age you think you have all the time in the world. Chris Martin isn't particularly young sorta but he has the energy to carry this song. I keep thinking I'm gonna get burned out on Coldplay but every single album has had that one single that is an absolute monster and takes me by the horns.
December 25, 20177 yr Author But this heart is open, bloodstain on my sleeve... 38.) Ellie Goulding - Something In The Way You Move" 2nd Single, Delirium Points: 13026 Chart Run: 42-28-14-7-2-1-3-4-7-11-15-24-37 (13 weeks) hOT2XC9nmSU This really deserved more than it got in the US. Delirium was a step down from Halcyon but it still brought out nice songs, and this was arguably the best out of all of them. It has rushing production and the build-up has got to be one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. It's bright and shining electro pop that I can get behind and I expected this from Ellie rather than a billion carbon copies of Love Me Like You Do. Even though that was a great song, I knew she was capable of more, and this was it.
December 25, 20177 yr Author But we can separate to form these hearts in stone... 37.) The Naked And Famous - "Higher" Lead Single, Simple Forms Points: 13032 Chart Run: 38-26-15-7-5-7-7-6-10-13-18-15-19-24-28-32-35-37-38-42-44-... (21 weeks) GCsyXSr7u-Q My first BJSC winner!!! (of hopefully many more if I ever get lucky) I'm pretty sure I explained a lot of my love for this track while discussing the album. This has many of the same qualities that made "Something In The Way You Move" delicious: rushing production, anthemic execution, and that almost triumphant and victorious aura. If it takes me to heaven, then I'm going to send it to BJSC, that's my rule.
December 25, 20177 yr Author Higher powers taking a hold on me... 36.) Drake f/WizKid & Kyla - "One Dance" 2nd Single, Views Points: 13687 Chart Run: 48-36-27-21-14-8-6-2-2-3-7-11-19-24-32-41 (16 weeks) vcer12OFU2g I still don't know why the hell this isn't available on YouTube in something other than a live performance. "One Dance" is basically something from Purpose but tailor made for Drake's album. There are notable dancehall influences, there's a sample from a Kyla song, and the tropical flavor only adds to the song's appeal. What makes this weird is that this feels so minimalistic yet the impact is so large and powerful, even with Drake droning on throughout the song. The overplay really killed its chances of being bigger here but it's still a jam.
December 25, 20177 yr Author Put down the weapons you fight with... 35.) Selena Gomez - "Kill Em With Kindness" 4th Single, Revival Points: 13984 Chart Run: 43-38-26-20-12-11-2-1-3-5-7-12-17-22-27-35-44 (17 weeks) HHP5MKgK0o8 The Revival era is Selena's biggest era to date and has catapulted her to megastar status. This "turn the other cheek anthem" was the worst performing of the four singles but it has an amazing message combined with danceable production and her sincere and faithful tone throughout. I'm surprised Rock Mafia produced this because I thought this was going to sound extremely dated. The "go ahead now" part before the chorus just takes my breath away. This song is especially relevant now; I think our refusal to take this song to heart and change has caused all these bad things to happen.
December 25, 20177 yr Author We were built to fall apart, then fall back together... 34.) Taylor Swift - "Out Of The Woods" 6th Single, 1989 Points: 14035 Chart Run: 5-1-3-3-5-4-4-7-12-21-29-40 (12 weeks) JLf9q36UsBk Another huge standout from 1989 (although this didn't do as well as "Style" here). It has a very typical production and it's something that's pretty prevalent in all of 1989 so this will be the last time I talk about it. It feels like floating on air until the last minute or so where Taylor's singing suddenly intensifies, but then things calm down to a steady halt until the adrenaline rushes through you again. It's another solid offering from Taylor. Plus that video still gives me chills. Not a fan of that thumbnail though, she looks like the girl from The Exorcist.
December 25, 20177 yr Author If I warned you that the fire's gonna burn... 33.) Martin Garrix f/Bebe Rexha - “In The Name Of Love" 3rd Single (?), TBA Points: 14163 Chart Run: 46-39-29-20-12-12-9-9-7-8-11-13-14-12-12-15-16-21-28-34-... (20 weeks) RnBT9uUYb1w Hmmm. Not something I expected from Martin Garrix but those are his synths and it has the same power. Own thing that I respect about Martin Garrix is that he’s the type of DJ who can do both commercial and festival-ready dance; he gets them chart positions and he keeps his credibility. The drop doesn’t seem to be anything special, but it's the build up combined with Bebe screaming “In the name of LOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVEEEEE” that shows off the song’s power. Martin in a suit tho. I’m swooning.
December 26, 20177 yr Send My Love  Definitely my favourite song from that album! Kill 'Em With Kindness was also a rare highlight fro Selena! :puke2: :puke2: :puke2: At one dance though :P
December 27, 20177 yr Author lmao so much for finishing this before Christmas I'm a dangerous man with some money in my pocket... 32.) Bruno Mars - "24K Magic" Lead Single, 24K Magic Points: 14258 Chart Run: 1-2-2-4-5-5-5-8-10-13-15-... (11 weeks) UqyT8IEBkvY This song OOZES charisma. After "Uptown Funk" destroyed charts everywhere I was wondering what would be next for him. The only reasonable logic would be to discover that genre even further than what was already presented. This was filled with late 80's/early 90's synths, an urban feel, Bruno's rapping, all wrapped in one glittery Versace package. It's basically Uptown Funk made 20-30 years in the past.
December 27, 20177 yr Favourites from the last few songs for me are In The Name Of Love (still his best venturing into future bass), One Dance and This Is What You Came For (one of Calvin's best!)
December 28, 20177 yr Author I've escaped my capture and I have no master... 31.) Zedd & Kesha - "True Colors" 4th Single, True Colors Points: 14742 Chart Run: 1-1-2-3-4-6-8-11-12-17-20-25-29-36-42 (15 weeks) weEV0Jf0Urk Well... a LOT has happened since Kesha last ruled the music scene. Back in 2013 she began fighting in a lawsuit against Dr. Luke and has only been a part of two singles since then. One of them was "Timber" which was a couple years ago. The other one was this rework of a Zedd song, replacing an uncredited Tim James. It was interesting because a lot of people claimed that Kesha provided vocals when the album first surfaced. So back in the True Colors rate I said this: This song was the last of the True Colors Experience songs, following a sold-out promo show in Madison Square Garden and a light show in the Empire State Building (the above video). I figured this would be low on the spectrum (no pun intended). This was his weakest track on the album (and probably to date), considering it was basically without any drop. Love the cowboy feel it had, but the vocals were a bit off...It's kinda safe to say that Kesha took this to a whole new level. It wasn't just some experimental Zedd track. It became something more. This was Kesha triumphing over all the demons she's had to face (rehab, her trial, her mismanaged flops after "Die Young", etc.) and getting ready to start a new chapter in her life. I remember being such a stan back when I was a freshman in high school and after seeing the progression in her artistry... I'm just so proud of her.
December 28, 20177 yr Author I hope I don't run out of time, could someone call a referee? 30.) Justin Bieber - "Sorry" 2nd Single, Purpose Points: 15420 Chart Run: 28-8-3-4-1-2-2-2-2-2-3-5-7-10-12-13-12-14-15-18-21-21-23-24-29-33-36-41-46-47-50-48-48 (25 weeks (33 in total)) fRh_vgS2dFE A large improvement on last year despite having most of its top 2 run split. Maybe the longevity helped it a bit. Possibly one of the best things Bieber has ever done, coming close to "Beauty And A Beat", is his second single off his new album, which I spammed for a good month. In fact, the most recent chart of mine has him spending a fifth consecutive week at #2. That's how much I'm still into this track. Of course, it's gonna end up doing even better this year than it did in this countdown, but I put the blame on him having a Q4 album. Anyway, this one is also produced by Skrillex and the first of his singles to have a video that doesn't feature him or some girl. I explained a lot of what happens in the video during my Best Videos interlude, so free to check that out..Well those last five weeks would have been irritating had that been the actual charts. But it's my personal chart so who cares? 19 weeks in the top 20 is impressive.
December 28, 20177 yr My favourites are This Is What You Came Here For, Send My Love (To Your New Lover), Hymn For The Weekend, Scars To Your Beautiful, Out Of The Woods, Something In The Way You Move, In The Name Of Love, One Dance and 24K Magic  Also btw I have been loving the commentaries great job!
December 28, 20177 yr Author But you don't wanna be high like me... 29.) Mike Posner - "I Took A Pill In Ibiza (Seeb Remix)" Lead Single, At Night, Alone. Points: 15657 Chart Run: 49-35-20-16-13-11-8-6-7-8-7-7-7-11-16-23-30-39 (18 weeks) foE1mO2yM04 A song that felt kinda generic when I first heard it (around... the end of summer 2015?) but then became a jam after five listens. It's that Seeb production y'all. Interestingly, the song was inspired by some dude who recognized him from his 1-2 hits from five years ago while he was partying with Avicii and gave him ecstasy pills because f*ck logic. It's funny because the entire thing became this cathartic lamentation of his two-hit wonder status and people are busy partying/jamming/popping pills to this. Also this became more prevalent than his actual huge hit from the beginning of the decade. How random.
