December 30, 20177 yr Author I'm seeing the pain, seeing the pleasure... 11.) ZAYN - "PILLOWTALK" Lead Single, Mind Of Mine Points: 21796 Chart Run: 17-11-8-5-5-1-2-2-2-3-5-6-8-12-17-22-27-31-37-44 (20 weeks) C_3d6GntKbk Wow this really overperformed. This was the first single from the newly solo Zayn project that was supposedly going to be a Naughty Boy collab. The version never happened with him and eventually materialized as a song with Joe Jonas. This was definitely more fit for him than the stadium rock hybrids 1D had been putting out for the last three eras (although he sounded amazing in their ballads). The way he screams the chorus feels a bit ambiguous because it feels like he's either in anguish or in mid-climax. Either way this seemed to be a much stronger effort than I was anticipating.
December 30, 20177 yr Author Everything you've searched for is right here on the dance floor... http://www.youredm.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Rain-Man-Summer.jpg 10.) Rain Man f/Oly- "Bring Back The Summer" Non-album Single Points: 22340 Chart Run: 35-14-9-6-6-5-7-5-4-6-5-6-8-10-14-18-20-21-23-21-23-28-32-32-34-40-45-49 (28 weeks) 1lamVH0iqMI This will probably be the highest chart points total any of my BJSC entries will ever get. After Rain Man left Krewella, I had wondered what direction he would be going in considering their style was more bass driven and fed off adrenaline. His previous entries before this song reflected that but it wasn't until this song that he tapped into what made "Alive" tick and transformed it into something that was fit for 2016. The result was a hybrid between "Lean On" and "Alive" that I never really saw coming. I managed to find this at around the same time as "Tremble" but thought the latter would become the bigger hit because it sounded like "Where Are U Now". Boy was I wrong. Also a 20+ spot jump from a non-established artist is pretty unprecedented, even if it is one of my favorite BJSC entries of all time. I remember this getting an 18 from mdh but now I think that this would be the type of song he'd despise.

DNCE - "Cake By The Ocean" Lead single, SWAAY EP/DNCE Points: 22865 Chart Run: 45-34-32-30-29-24-18-16-9-3-5-4-4-4-2-1-2-6-7-11-14-13-15-20-23-25-29-33-35-38-37-36-39-41-42-45-49 (29 weeks (37 in total)) vWaRiD5ym74 So this became Joe's big break after a long time struggling... only to see him struggle once more. This is one of two carryovers from 2015 but they were already on the verge of doing well. I suspect the 2017 list will be crawling with songs from this list. With 2015 points this would be challenging for top 3 probably. This next song is, as the song says, "F*cking delicious". Joe Jonas' new project DNCE is another future hit that comes a bit lower in this countdown, despite finally making top 10 during this week's chart. Joe has done a lot concerning his music career past the Jo Bros, but nothing has ever reached the level of success this song has at this point. In a way, they're like Cobra Starship part 2: going a pop route that doesn't seem traditional but fits within the mainframe in the same way, and making a profit out of it. I finally got to streaming the entire EP and it was pretty nice.I find it ironic that this was a song that felt fit for the summer and it became a hit during the fall/winter and lingered in the spring. Man, radio avoided this over the summer of 2015. :P It was kind of a lucky #1 in retrospect.
December 30, 20177 yr Author Should've known your love was a game... 8.) Charlie Puth f/Selena Gomez - "We Don't Talk Anymore" 3rd single, Nine Track Mind Points: 23145 Chart Run: 49-33-26-24-23-23-18-17-12-8-6-5-3-4-3-3-3-5-8-12-14-18-23-27-31-36-39-40-45-48-... (30 weeks) 3AtDnEC4zak I've seen and heard a lot of breakup songs that end up trashing the other, wishing ill on their ex, yada yada yada... you've heard it before. It's 90% of Taylor Swift's discography, it's no surprise to everyone. This song deals with the hangover part of the post-breakup period. It's like venturing into the five stages of grief, but we're not dealing with the anger or the acceptance... this deals with the third and fourth stages. There are a lot of regrets on Charlie's part, and a few on Selena's as well. It seems the relationship ended horribly and they're venting their frustrations out on this song because they realized they still have some feelings for one another. They just don't know how to accept and move on yet because the scars are still so fresh. This feels like Charlie's transition period from copying Meghan Trainor to developing his own style and swagger.
December 30, 20177 yr Author These friends keep talkin' way too much... 7.) Ariana Grande f/Nicki Minaj - "Side To Side" 3rd single, Dangerous Woman Points: 23628 Chart Run: 35-17-10-6-4-4-3-1-1-2-2-3-3-5-6-10... (16 weeks) SXiSVQZLje8 I had a feeling this was gonna be overtly sexual after hearing it for the first time, but the video took this to an extreme level. This song is basically that morning feeling you get after some really hard sex, and sometimes that may leave you feeling numb and make you walk side to side. :P Like most Ari songs, it's the attitude that makes this, and this song is filled with it, especially with Nicki by her side.
December 30, 20177 yr Author Please don't make any sudden moves... 6.) Twenty One Pilots - "Heathens" Soundtrack single, Suicide Squad Points: 23666 Chart Run: 45-46-32-21-9-2-1-1-1-2-5-4-5-7-8-9-11-13-15-17-20-23-22-24-... (24 weeks) UprcpdwuwCg Aww, I was hoping this was gonna make the top 5. This was hauntingly beautiful. It captured the essence of what Suicide Squad was - you may call them crazy, you may call them villains, but you don't know what their story is. You don't know the sacrifices they made or the people they have been with. And the only way to beat them is to join them. I also think this is fit for Halloween so it could possibly get a lot of plays from that in the future. FIVE MORE AND I'M DONE WITH THIS
December 30, 20177 yr Author These shallow waters never met what I needed... 5.) Alan Walker - Faded" Non-album single Points: 25017 Chart Run: 47-37-31-18-14-9-8-6-6-5-5-5-4-3-1-2-4-7-11-15-19-22-28-30-32-34-41 (27 weeks) 60ItHLz5WEA Yeah this also greatly overperformed, but that's more because it took forever to impact the US and when it did there wasn't any hype for it anymore because everyone had already heard it. See, this strategy would have worked a couple years ago but not now when Spotify takes up over half of the chart's actual impact. This feels a bit desolate, and that may be from the piano intro that makes it sound like this ballad that I would be prepared to hate. What ends up coming out sounds like a synthesized orchestra. It pounds on you until it reaches the climax, and then it lets the power flow through you. But yeah, this chart run feels like it should have been the pop radio chart run. That slowdown at the top 5 gave it so many points.
December 30, 20177 yr Author Don't need no butterflies when you give me the whole damn zoo... 4.) Hailee Steinfeld & Grey f/Zedd - "Starving" 3rd single. HAIZ EP Points: 25108 Chart Run: 5-3-2-1-1-2-3-5-6-8-8-9-10-10-11-12-14-16-18-21-24-27-30-... (23 weeks) xwjwCFZpdns I didn't know that I was starving till I tasted food Don't need no chicken fries when you give me McNuggets too Pure bliss. That's exactly what this song it. Just a bunch of sugar and fluff and I loved every single minute of it. It was also such a new thing for Zedd (although he had worked with Grey in the past) that seeing it become a hit everywhere was admittedly satisfying. It's interesting to see that out of this, Britney and Katy, this was the biggest hit of them all both here and irl, but I see why. It's just fun.
December 30, 20177 yr Author I know you're always on the night shift... 3.) Fifth Harmony f/Ty Dolla $ign - "Work From Home" Lead single, 7/27 Points: 26755 Chart Run: 1-2-3-3-3-1-1-2-2-3-5-6-9-11-13-15-18-21-24-27-31-30-30-34-36-38-42-46-50 (29 weeks) 5GL9JoH4Sws Lmao so this was just as big as their previous #1 here but much bigger irl. Here's a rundown of the girls again like I did with "That's My Girl": Dinah: amazing Normani: hot Ally: slaying Lauren: YAS. She was thrusted FRONT AND CENTER with singing that chorus and I loved every minute of it. Camila: YOU DON GOTTA GO TO WOOOOOUEEERRREEEERRRRRKKKKK, OOOUUUUHHH. I actually like her squealing in this. Right when I heard the Gotta Get Thru This sample I knew this was gonna blow up. Sonically it doesn't feel too dissimilar to Worth It but at the same time there's a sense of edginess and maturity; rather than coming through guns swinging, they're choosing their own battles and letting the men come to them. It's that kinda of confidence and attitude that make songs like this click. - STRESSED OUT VS. INTO YOU
December 30, 20177 yr Author A little less conversation, and a little more touch my body... 2.) Ariana Grande - "Into You" 2nd single, Dangerous Woman Points: 26825 Chart Run: 46-47-1-1-1-1-2-2-1-3-3-5-4-7-10-12-13-16-20-23-22-22-26-29-30-33-34-38-40-43-42-44-46-... (33 weeks) 1ekZEVeXwek Upon first listen, this sounds like a standard pop affair for Ariana. It's another one of those dark pop production masterpieces that only Max Martin can come up with (I mean, this sound is typical Max Martin, what did y'all expect?), but then the middle 8. THAT MIDDLE 8. It was a moment in itself. It was explosive, almost similar to Christina Aguilera's "Your Body" except this one felt like 100 tons of C4 rather than a stick of dynamite. The best thing was that it was a mix of the old and the new Ari: it had a dark and edgy package but everything within it was just glittery and full of shine like usual. The thing is, I expected this from Ari, and even with five weeks at #1, it wasn't enough to beat this juggernaut...
December 30, 20177 yr Author I wish I didn't have to rhyme every time I sang... 1.) Twenty One Pilots - "Stressed Out" 3rd/2nd single, Blurryface Points: 26912 Chart Run: 29-9-1-1-1-1-1-2-2-2-2-1-3-4-7-8-9-12-12-13-14-16-18-22-24-27-29-29-30-32-34-38-39-43-44-46-48-48-48 (35 weeks (40 in total)) pXRviuL6vMY Yeah. I don't think my EOY #1 was ever decided in the previous year (they've usually been #1 debuts or were giant around the spring) but nothing really could beat this. What else can I say about this song? Holds the records for longest reigner ever with 40 weeks (tied with Ride) and for most points allotted within its time on the chart. 34386 POINTS. "Break Free" didn't even crack 30000 and that's like my favorite song of all time. This was a MONSTER. Of course, that's noting that this chart felt more tumultuous and competitive than most charts but that's because so many good songs appeared during that year and listening just felt like fun and not like a job. This song stayed within my soul for over half of the year, and... it's become a staple of me. SO... here's what I said when it was only charting for five weeks... Here is the first of the many #1's of 2015 - albeit with only five charting weeks counting toward the year. It's shaping up to become one of the biggest songs on my chart though, so I guess you can call me a stan now. :) Now I like this song not for its quirky production, not because it goes with my personality, but because of its lyrics: IMO this song has some of the most beautiful lyrics of all-time. It's an ode to the simpler times when our innocence wasn't ruined by thoughts of stress and the turmoil of adulthood. When we were kids, what did we have to worry about? The only thing we thought was bad was staying up past our bedtime. We thought going to space would make so much money. Young and naive we were, but now that we're older we yearn for those times. Its their lyrics that have made me appreciate the duo for what they're worth. The thing with this song though... it wasn't just something that was quirky and felt a bit random because they had never gotten extensive support from pop radio before. This song made me think things. It felt like I had to make some sort of revelation to get what the heck was going on. I didn't want to be someone who worked all day and all night and never had time for myself. It was time I needed a change. It made me realize the power of growth and realizing where I came from. To put it this way, this song is perfection. Which is why they need to get out there and work on a new album ASAP. - So yeah, thanks to everyone who had been following over the past year while I tried to finish this, and keep a look out for the 2017 EOY which will be starting sometime when I wake up in the morning :P
December 30, 20177 yr Stressed Out is a great choice of #1! I first heard it in late 2015 and I ended up singing it without really knowing anything about the song :o Glad it did so well in the charts!
December 30, 20177 yr Double chainsmokers  I can still really jam out to Closer ngl Bring Back The Summer is amazing too, nice to see you sent it to BJSC, it was huge for me last summer!
