December 18, 20169 yr But in 1995 there was a challenger from that Oasis cover? Mike Flowers Pops? And in no year since possibly the 1970s has the #1 sold so few copies in this week.. !! No difference to the challengers this week not taking the top spot and we are in a strange new world still chart wise with sales dwindling and streams building up slowly and records staying for a lot longer!
December 19, 20169 yr The silence from the OCC is deafening today (because Clean Bandit comfortable lead for 7th week at number 1 is hardly headline grabbing) but I think interest in the Christmas #1 is finally beginning to die away, just as interest in the actual chart has over the past decade. I suppose it was inevitable. The death of TOTP was the first nail in the coffin, the move of the chart to Fridays where it has become an afterthought instead of an institution was next and ultimately a lot of people just don't care what the most listened to song is each week. Streaming absolutely had to be introduced to keep the charts relevant but in everything aside from relevance it's been a poisoned chalice for the OCC because the charts have lost their appeal. They are slow moving and boring because they're dominated by the same sounds as artists readjust their style to chase streaming numbers. Innovation and risk among most of the big name artists has gone out the window because they don't dare upset the playlist curators with something that stands out and might not catch on. Also, a list of the weekly most popular songs listened to on the internet doesn't really have the same glamourous appeal as a list that has been determined by people trekking to record stores and deciding which singles are deserving of their hard earned cash. This isn't really a grumble on streaming because there was no way it couldn't have been included to not make the charts look horribly out of touch, but more me thinking about the impact it has had on the music industry (for now) which has led to a complete lack of interest in the charts. As for the Xmas #1, that was killed off by Cowell and the fact that major artists have strayed away from releasing anything in December for well over a decade. And streaming has just accelerated the declining interest. Or perhaps it's just an outdated concept that nobody really cares about anymore!
December 19, 20169 yr The Robbie song sounds like something a child would sing in assembly at primary school. I can't stand it. It's a song TO a child, with the chorus sung AS the child, so I'd say he's hit the nail on the head there. The lyric is very powerful and emotional, especially to people with young children (ie. his main demographic now).
December 19, 20169 yr I think Clean Bandit being Christmas Number One will sadly mark the death of the 'race for Xmas #1' media excitement and it'll just be another chart week, well I'd say it's sad but it means we don't have to put up with one-week wonders from charity singles dominating every year which is great news.

Not such great news for the people whose lives are changed or saved by the charities though, is it? But as long as you're not going to be mildly inconvenienced by someone releasing a song you don't like, I guess that's okay.

If charity singles are essential then release them at any other time of the year.

December 19, 20169 yr Wasn't expecting 'Human' to be quite as close as that to 'Rockabye', it's going to be really close I reckon. Come on Clean Bandit!
December 19, 20169 yr So shocked to see Litlte Mix at #3... Without even being top 20 on Spotify I didn't see this happening soon
December 19, 20169 yr Ball & Boe should get to 100k this week but only just. They are up on last Monday's Sales (by about 4.8k) but it is looking like this will be the only Album to break 100k this week which is poor in the week before Christmas!
December 19, 20169 yr Author Must be missing data surely? There is still missing data, Human is just too close. Only Sunday's data. (as always). London Hospice Choir who were #1 on Saturday are now 33...So that goes to show streaming is in full force.
December 19, 20169 yr Those album sales are tragic for Xmas week...I guess buying people albums isn't really a thing anymore. To be fair though I've only bought one for somebody in all my presents and I used to buy albums for everyone. They all stream now and I'm not even sure if most of them still have CD players so it's pointless...
December 19, 20169 yr LM should end up at number 2 on the albums chart Yes, wouldn't be surprised if they get another week at the top in the week after Christmas as well (ie after the Ball & Boe Sales have dropped off). Possible they will go 3->2->1...
December 19, 20169 yr I would say vinyl sales at xmas could eventually be more popular than Cds because a lot of people don't buy music and just stream whereas others who used to buy cds are now buying more vinyl as its more collectable - I started doing this when I moved to downloading.
December 19, 20169 yr London Hospice Choir who were #1 on Saturday are now 33...So that goes to show streaming is in full force. I take it that's the highest charity track, and Jo Cox's track has totally crashed
December 19, 20169 yr Author I take it that's the highest charity track, and Jo Cox's track has totally crashed  Inspiral Carpets are the highest campaign song, scraping the top 20. Jo Cox is embarrassingly low and may even miss the top 100 this week. Those album sales are tragic for Xmas week...I guess buying people albums isn't really a thing anymore. To be fair though I've only bought one for somebody in all my presents and I used to buy albums for everyone. They all stream now and I'm not even sure if most of them still have CD players so it's pointless... I was thinking this too...Though last week they seemed low too, but there was no weekday dip and they all sold solidly throughout the week, so I can see Michael Ball hitting 100k this week.
