Are the ratings for Benidorm decent?

They're decent but it's true that it doesn't give it much space to fall. Thankfully, it seems like, after a second week drop, Benidorm's ratings level out, so it should in theory still average over 4m. For a show that is almost 10 series in, as well as the fact this series commenced at the start of March instead of January like the last three series, getting 4m+ is good going. With Benidorm, it's not going to get back to its heyday, but it seems to be having a 'controlled' fall.

Not Going Out averaged 3.48m (17.1%), up on last series' 3.28m (14.8%) (which aired at 9:30pm from October to December 2014).

I wonder if it will get a "fresh start" on each Monday with the new weekly host or whether this poor reception from Week 1 will affect it for the rest of its run.

I'm inclined to think the latter.

  • Author
I suppose Monday is its best lead-in (I think Broadchurch could be in for another 7m+ rating - the first ep got good reviews by all accounts so in that respect there's no reason for it to have big second week dip) so maybe that as well as the knowledge of it being a new host could encourage viewers to stick with it. John Bishop is the host and I would suspect he'll be less marmite than David Walliams.
If it's the "safe" John Bishop then it is unlikely to be much good. If it's the more relaxed John Bishop who appears regularly on Graham Norton's show, it could give the programme the lift it needs after its first week. The time slot should - in theory - mean that it's the latter John Bishop.

Saturday 4th March

BBC 1

18:00 Pointless Celebrities - 4.19m (24.2%) [Peak: 4.75m (26.4%)]

18:45 Let's Sing & Dance for Comic Relief - 3.35m (17.2%) [Peak: 4.25m (23.3%)]

20:00 Who Dares Wins - 2.83m (13.6%) [Peak: 3.95m (19.1%)]

20:40 Casualty - 4.17m (20.5%) [Peak: 4.37m (22.3%)]

21:30 Mrs Brown's Boys (Repeat) - 3.49m (18.8%) [Peak: 4.14m (22.7%)]

ITV (inc. +1)

17:00 Despicable Me 2 - 1.87m (11.5%) [Peak: 2.97m (16.3%)]

19:00 Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway - 6.99m (34.4%) [Peak: 8.49m (40.0%)]

20:30 The Voice UK - 5.06m (25.1%) [Peak: 5.76m (28.2%)]

-x-

That's really poor for Let's Sing & Dance for Comic Relief - just look at the first episode ratings for previous series:

2009: 6.81m (31.1%)

2010: 6.25m (26.8%)

2011: 7.56m (32.3%)

2012: 6.54m (28.9%)

2013: 6.75m (31.2%)

2017: 3.35m (17.2%)

The US drama Lethal Weapon was repeated on ITV at 10pm and rated 1.22m (7.7%), which puts it at 4.38m when combined with Friday's first airing.

I watched about 5 mins of Let's Sing and Dance and it was truly awful

Glad to see The Voice holding above 5m despite being in the less popular stages.

Call the Midwife was incredibly consistent last night in the ratings, with its peak so little ahead of its average.

I've added in the ratings for ITV News back in its 10pm slot and the highlights of The Nightly Show - make of them as you will.

Awful for The Voice UK - shame because all of its Saturday shows have performed consistently.

2.79m is a far cry from the ratings Top Gear got in its heyday but it is higher than all but one of the ratings from the last series (which opened with 4.3m).

That is bad for The Voice UK BUT its never faced competition like 'Call the Midwife' which is unstoppable, for some reason and then there's also Top Gear too. That is a good figure for Top Gear tbf, considering last year. I think it has far more potential to grow its audience than last year. The reviews have been far better and it will never hit the same highs as Clarkson, Hammond & May anyway unless the show really pulls it out the bag.

21:00 Broadchurch - 7.32m (32.7%)

22:00 The Nightly Show with John Bishop - 2.36m (14.6%)

Fantastic for Broadchurch! That's up on the second episode of both previous series (6.39m for S1E2 and 6.13m for S2E2) and is only 160k down on the previous episode (S1E2 had a drop of 480k and S2E2 had a drop of 1.43m).

The Nightly Show is down on last Monday's 2.86m but I think that was to be expected. At least that many were willing to give it another go with a new host.

The Replacement got pretty much the exact figures as it did last week - very impressive retention there!

The Nightly Show is up on the 1.3m from last Tuesday but it still concludes a very poor night for ITV.

21:00 Benidorm - 3.80m (19.0%)

22:00 The Nightly Show with John Bishop - 1.69m (10.6%)

Poor for Benidorm - a drop of 870k week-on-week compared to the 690k second week drop from last series. The previous series remained above 4m for its run whilst this one is already quite under; I suppose it could level out but I feel it could drop further. I can see there being a 10th series but I think it's time to call it a day after that.

Call the Midwife had a series average of 8.61m - 570k up on the last series - and The Good Karma Hospital averaged 5.32m (and will be back for a second series).

Meanwhile, SS-GB dipping under 3m is extremely poor. It's the last episode next week so it may see a little rise, but it's a world away from the 6m debut. Similarly, The Voice is really struggling. Its series average could dip under 5m, compared to the 5.71m of the last series on BBC 1.

Top Gear is pretty much exactly what it was last week and is only slightly down on the 2.81m of last series' second episode.

Broadchurch held up well against sport and great to see how The Replacement has grown over its three episodes.

The less said about The Nightly Show, the better. ITV News at 10:30pm only got 740k (5.9%) last night too, compared to 2m it usually gets at 10pm.
