You'd really wanna live in a place where people kill you for the color of your skin?

They abolished slavery over 150 years ago, and as for lawlessness, that is not caused by *governments*...

I love much of the USA, I grew up admiring it, and wouldn't have spent well over 6 months of my life there if I didn't, but I'm not blind to its faults and neither are a lot of Americans.

Feel free to go and live there - I assume you are white and not Muslim and they would let you in as long as you are wealthy and can support yourself. Anything that gives you a wider world view is to be encouraged.

They abolished slavery in theory 150 years ago. In practise there still isn't equality. Not even close, and you are easily old enough to vaguely be aware of the black movement of the 60's trying to get basic things like not being stuffed into all-black schools or forced to sit on non-white seats on the bus. Cos it's within my living memory....

PS you made the comparison not me. The UK leaving the EU without a plan is NOTHING like the history of the USA.

PPS I hate to say it, cos it makes me look like a smart arse but I did a degree in American Studies (that's how much I am fascinated by/love some of the ideals of the USA) so you need to do a bit of studying before making vague references I can pick at off the top of my head without resorting to wikipedia. Just a suggestion...!

I know, nobody loves a smart arse... :P

I don't believe you need to formulate a precise plan in advance - the US Founding Fathers didn't have one when they declared Independence, yet 'winging it' turned out pretty well for that country.

United States of America

Country in North America

Population: 323.1 million (2016)

Area: 9.834 million km²

United Kingdom

Country in Europe

Population: 65.64 million (2016) World Bank

Area: 242,495 km²

11 states alone are bigger than the Uk.

Lol x

That will increase to at least HALF when Scotland and Northern Ireland leave due to the Little Englander vote lol x

But we'll get a brilliant trade deal from the USA because we're British.

Are we talking about actual lynchings, police shootings, or what?

we're talking statistical evidence in numerous areas.

Is this the sort of thing you had in mind?

If it isn't, then please post a link to the statistical evidence you refer to.

Disclaimer : Just to make it crystal clear, I do not for one second dispute that there is a problem with people being killed on racial grounds alone

That seems quite comprehensive on a cursory runthrough....

I was particularly thinking about shoot-to-kill policies of US police where black people are WAY more likely to be killed for nothing at all, or nothing much, even if unarmed, and the police dont get prosecuted.

The ingrained racism is throughout all society. trump was on record calling for the death penalty for 5 teenage boys in New York for a CRIME THEY DIDN'T COMMIT. He still calls for their deaths based on nothing but racism. same as he has a history of discrimination against black tenants in his buildings. And so much else. So, it runs from billionaires right down to local trigger-happy cops stopping by gun-toting red-neck clods along the way....

If you want proof, just randomly google local US newspapers and select a sample for yourself, and see what sort of local news events there are that would be national news items in the UK. Yes the US is bigger, but only 4 or 5 times bigger in population....

Just to clarify - what sort of numbers are we talking about here - a handful per annum? Dozens, hundreds?

google it. If it's one it's still too many.

(Hint: it isn't one)

You were the one making the statement, so I assumed you would already have the facts to hand.

After all, when I make claims, you expect *me* to have done my homework in advance...

wikipedia:

Bias motivation reports showed that of the 7,254 hate crimes reported in 2011, 47.7% (3,465) were motivated by race, with 72% (2,494) of race-motivated incidents being anti-black.[30] In addition, 20.8% (1,508) of hate crimes were motivated by sexual orientation, with 57.8% (871) of orientation-motivated incidents being anti-male homosexual.[30] The third largest motivation factor for hate crime was religion, representing 18.2% (1,318) incidents, with 62.2% (820) of religion-motivated incidents being anti-Jewish.[30]

or any local newspaper in the Unites States. Or any wikipedia article on the history of racism in the USA. Or just go there and drive out of the cities and look at ramshackle towns in Florida (all-black), or note who does the cleaning in motels (black and hispanic, mostly) or anything really.

A discussion is pointless really on whether it exists because it exists and has always existed, this is historical fact, watch Breitbart, Fox News, tweets of far-right groups, and the words of the President of the USA.

Now, your turn. Find some evidence that the USA as a nation (not most of the population note, just an active substantial minority part of it) ISNT racist or just accept it is. That can also apply to any nation, of course, which is why legislation against it is needed.

Unfortunately. disadvantaged groups get stuck with the shitty jobs wherever you are in the world. I'm not saying that's right, only that it's the truth.

Yes, there is still significant racism in the US, though the situation is better than it was say 50 years ago, and will hopefully continue to improve. I also agree that further legislation is needed, but I am unsure as to what form that would take?

Does anyone else feel this way, at this point I had enough of seeing his ugly mug on my tv

I try to avoid hearing about him whenever I can. :P

Of course. That's what he wants - to make you so sick of his lies that he gets away with all the terrible things he's doing...

The problem is, the sort of poople who voted for him, probably *like* what he is doing... :o

and a large proportion are too dumb to realise that it's them he's screwing. All will become quite clear when they need medical assistance, or the jobs disappear in a trade war despite all his promises....

That doesn't mean smart people should let him get away with it. had Obama done even a small proportion of the stuff he's done he would have been hounded out of office. Trump uses sleight of hand, lies, and bitter nastiness to disguise his greedy, corruption and treachery. Once the republicans lose their majorities then things will start to change...

and even then they'll still blame Obama and/or The Clintons.
No of course not. He'll be around until Jan. 2025 so people had better get used to him.
